Looking to bolster the left-side of their bullpen, the St. Louis Cardinals have acquired reliever Jake Eder from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for 1B Phoenix Billings, utility infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa and minor-league outfielder Brayden Sharp.
Eder, 30, has pitched in 38 games for Chicago this season going 3-4 with three saves and a 4.24 ERA. Making $990,000, he will be a free-agent at the end of the season. Billings, 28, has been given numerous opportunities to earn a lead role for the Cardinals over the past two seasons but has failed to take advantage. This season, he has played in 16 games/12 starts and hit just .152 with two home runs and five RBIs. Since 2026, he has played in 133 games/116 starts in the majors and hit just .202 with 20 homers and 57 RBIs. Acquired from Kansas City during the 2026 season, Kiner-Falefa has primarily been used an all-purpose infielder. But this season he started to squawk about not being a starter. This is despite him hitting .178 with no home runs and three RBIs in 28 games/20 starts. In his time with St. Louis, the 34-year-old has hit .271 with three home runs and 58 RBIs in 212 games/188 starts. A 20th-round pick in the 2027 draft, Sharp has spent the 2029 season at high-A Peoria and AA Springfield. The 24-year-old at Peoria at the time of the trade. In 75 games this season, Sharp has hit .281 with 12 home runs and 47 RBIs. |
