Cards news: Dec. 19 -- RHP Church acquired from Cleveland for SP Joey Estes
The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired right-handed relief pitcher Marc Church from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for right-handed starting pitcher Joey Estes.
Drafted by the Rangers in the 18th round of the 2019 draft, Church broke into the majors in 2024 and spent four seasons in the Rangers bullpen before being traded to Cleveland in the 2028 offseason. Last season, Church, 28, got into 58 games going 4-7 with 32 saves and a 4.33 ERA. For his career, he has appeared in 299 games, all in relief and gone 23-31 with 61 saves and a 3.60 ERA. The 28-year-old Estes led the Cardinals in wins last year while going 14-9 with a 4.68 ERA. And has been a dependable starter during his tenure with the team. Acquired via trade from Oakland before the 2027 season, he pitched in 78 games/73 starts for St. Louis and posted a 24-27 record with one saves and a 4.22 ERA. Cards news: Dec. 21 -- RHP Mlodzinski agrees to one-year deal
The St. Louis Cardinals have signed right-handed relief pitcher Carmen Mlodzinski to a one-year contract worth $3.8 million.
The 30-year-old Mlodzinski started the 2029 season with the Texas Rangers before being traded to the Miami Marlins. In 56 relief appearances, he went 7-7 with two saves and a 3.43 ERA. Mlodzinski broke into the majors with the Pittsburgh in 2023 and also spent parts of four seasons with the Diamondbacks. Overall, he has pitched in 288 games/38 starts, during which he owns a 32-32 record with 21 saves and a 3.63 ERA. |

The St. Louis Cardinals have announced the signing of right-handed relief pitcher Evan Phillips to a two-year contract.
The deal is worth $11.6 million, but includes a team buyout for the 2029 season. Phillips, 35, split the 2029 season between Texas and Arizona. He got into 50 games going 6-1 with five saves and a 4.33 ERA. Phillips broke into the majors with the Orioles in 2018. Since that time, he also has pitched for the Dodgers, Tampa Bay, the Dodgers again, the Cubs, Phillies and then the Rangers and D'backs. In 518 appearances, just one of them a start, he has gone 38-33 with 109 saves and a 3.77 ERA. |

Cards news: Jan. 1 -- LHP Graterol acquired from Boston for two minor leaguers
The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired left-handed relief pitcher Busdar Graterol from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for minor-league second baseman Randal Diaz and right-handed pitcher Joe Dhu.
Graterol, 31, has been with the Red Sox since the 2026 season. Last year, he pitched in 52 games going 3-1 with a 3.79 ERA. Signed by Minnesota as an international free agent in 2014 Graterol broke into the majors in 2019 and since then has pitched for the Dodgers and the Red Sox. In 468 games, five starts, he has a career record of 32-21 with 19 saves and a 3.01 ERA. Acquired via trade from the Nationals, who had drafted him in the fifth round of the 2024 draft, Diaz, 26, split the 2029 season between AA Springfield and AAA Memphis. In 114 games/101 starts, he hit .238 with 14 home runs and 53 RBIs. Signed out of Australia in March of 2028, the 18-year-old Dhu split 2029 between the Rookie League team in Florida and Class A Palm Beach. In 18 games/seven starts, he was 2-4 with a 5.47 ERA. |

The St. Louis Cardinals have announced the signing of catcher Joey Bart and right-handed relief pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga to free-agent contracts.
Bart, 33, spent most of last season with Texas where in 72 games/61 starts he hit .228 with two home runs and 17 RBIs. Originally drafted by Tampa Bay in the 27th round of the 2015 draft, Bart broke into the majors in 2020 with the San Francisco Giants. Since that time, he has played for the Giants, Pirates and Rangers. In 638 games/554 starts, he is a career .219 hitter with 59 home runs and 227 RBIs. The 35-year-old Loaisiga spent the 2029 season with the Rangers, where he was 6-1 with a 3.25 ERA in 47 games. Signed as an international free agent by the Giants in 2012, Loaisiga broke into the majors in 2018 with the Yankees. Over the course of his career, he has pitched for the Yankees, Dodgers, Orioles, Yankees again and the Rangers for the past two seasons. The St. Louis Cardinals have signed right-handed pitcher Logan Gilbert to a three-year contract worth $55.8 million.
The third season includes a team buyout worth $2.5 million. The 32-year-old Gilbert spent the 2029 season with the Chicago Cubs, where in 33 starts he went 10-10 with 3.53 ERA. Prior to that, he had spent the rest of his career with the Seattle Mariners who had selected him in the first round of the 2018 draft. He broke into the majors in 2021 and in eight seasons with the Mariners, he went 80-63 in 218 starts and posted a 3.83 ERA. |

The St. Louis Cardinals have announced the signing of left-handed pitcher Drew Rom to a free-agent contract worth $5,040,000.
Rom, 30, came up through the Cardinals system and broke into the majors in 2023. From then until July of last season, he pitched out of the Cardinals bullpen. In 2029, he got into 47 games for St. Louis going 8-1 with one save and a 3.55 ERA. Over his career with the Cardinals, he has worked in 298 games/eight starts while going 21-13 with 10 saves and a 3.88. With free agency looming, St. Louis traded Rom to the Washington Nationals for outfielder Josh Busch and starting pitcher Alfredo Lopez. Rom pitched in 20 games for Washington, starting seven, while going 2-3 with one save and a 3.41 ERA. He then moved into free agency and decided he wanted to come back to St. Louis. |
