News
200 Wins for Boston's Welch
Tuesday, July 2nd, 1895: It was a special day at South End Grounds III for Boston's Mickey Welch. The Beaneaters ace logged his 200th career win against the Pirates. In the 8-0 decision Welch tossed 9 innings, surrendered 6 hits with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts.

"I'm real fortunate that I had the opportunity to play with such good players during my career," said Welch. "I just couldn't have drawn it up any better. I'm glad I did it in this uniform, too. Boston is a great organization to play for."

In his career Welch has amassed 200 wins and 150 losses with an ERA of 2.86 and 1092 strikeouts.

Swartzel Signs for 8 years
Thursday, July 4th, 1895: Happy times in Philadelphia as the Athletics and star starting pitcher Park Swartzel put the finishing touches on a $16,000 contract extension that will keep the 29-year-old in town 8 years longer.

The signing is great news for Philadelphia because players of this caliber are hard to come by.

For the year Swartzel has a 17-10 record with a 3.21 ERA in 28 starts.

Big Switch: Van Haltren for Joyce
Saturday, July 20th, 1895: A major trade has been executed between the Chicago Colts and Louisville Colonels, one that has stunned the baseball world. The Colts traded 29-year-old center fielder George Van Haltren to the Colonels for 29-year-old third baseman Bill Joyce. When BNN contacted the Colts GM, he said, "Putting this deal together was a lot of hard work, but the payoff will be tremendous and Colts fans ought to be excited about it". The Colonels GM added, "We put a lot of thought into this... this trade will win us more ballgames". BNN analysts are up in arms debating who got the better end of the deal.

So far this year Van Haltren is batting .333 with 2 home runs, 70 RBIs and 62 runs scored.

This year Joyce has batted at a .253 pace with 74 hits, 5 home runs, 64 RBIs and scored 62 times.

Awards

NL Best Fielders for 1895 Selected
Sunday, September 15th, 1895: Making the play is the mark of great defenders. Spearing a liner, diving in the hole or crashing headlong into the wall makes no difference to these awe-inspiring fielders. Magicians they sometimes appear to be, showing up out of nowhere to rob a batter of a hit and to turn a hit into an out. Pitchers love 'em and batters curse 'em. These defensive wizards will collect their 1895 National League Glove Wizard Awards tonight:

Pitcher: Nat Hudson (Pittsburgh Pirates)
Catcher: Joe Sugden (Pittsburgh Pirates)
First Baseman: Tom McCreery (Cincinnati Reds)
Second Baseman: Bobby Lowe (St. Louis Browns)
Third Baseman: John McGraw (St. Louis Browns)
Shortstop: Phil Tomney (Boston Beaneaters)
Left Fielder: Ed Delahanty (New York Giants)
Center Fielder: Elmer Smith (Philadelphia Phillies)
Right Fielder: Dusty Miller (St. Louis Browns)

AL Glove Wizard Award Winners Announced

Catcher: Jack Clements (Detroit Tigers)
First Baseman: Jake Beckley (Chicago White Sox)
Second Baseman: Joe Quinn (Detroit Tigers)

National League Picks Premier Rookie

The 20-year-old first baseman crunched some good numbers with a .338 batting average and a .386 on-base percentage to go with his 9 home runs, 111 RBIs and 98 runs scored.

NL Announces #1 Batter Award
Thursday, September 19th, 1895: St. Louis's John McGraw teed off on opposing pitching all season long and claimed the National League Outstanding Hitter Award today.

He belted out 186 hits in 497 at-bats to compile a .374 batting average and a .465 on-base percentage in 1895. He also tallied 34 doubles, 6 triples, 1 home run, 81 RBIs, and 116 runs scored.

1895 Draft

NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed
Wednesday, October 2nd, 1895: The biggest anxiety for 1895 new young players is getting drafted. For the young man with something to prove, simple entrance into the draft does not guarantee a big league contract. Some will suffer the excruciating torment of having to stand by as their competitors get picked before them, hoping that they get a slim chance to prove their skills anywhere. At any rate, teams now have 30 days to scout the draft pool before the draft is held.

The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be:
1. Fielder Jones, 24 year-old right fielder out of college.

Friday, November 1st, 1895: The scouting reports are in. Baseball officials have spent endless hours, days and weeks debating and agonizing over which first-year players should be drafted. Some guys do it scientifically, while the grizzled old pros go by gut feel. Whatever the team's philosophy, the North American BaseBall League amateur draft is today and these ballclubs have the first five selections: Boston, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Detroit. It is the consensus among the baseball journalists and experts that these guys will go in the first ten picks:

News
Philadelphia, Chicago Trade Players
Thursday, April 23rd, 1896: Officials for Philadelphia confirmed that they have traded 32-year-old catcher Ed Harting, 26-year-old left fielder Jack Sharrott, a 1st round draft pick and $1,250 in cash to the Chicago White Sox. In return, the Athletics will receive 25-year-old shortstop Charlie Nyce.

This season Nyce has hit at a .460 clip with 42 RBIs, 8 home runs and 13 runs scored. He has played in 16 games.

Dan Casey Tames Chicago 11-2 for #250
Monday, April 27th, 1896:
His goal at twenty was to win twenty games one year, pitch until he was thirty, win the league pennant and to make some money. Well, Dan Casey did something even better -- the 33-year-old Baltimore Orioles star has now won 250 games in his career. That put him in a very select group of pitchers.

He joined that exclusive club today at South Side Park II by whipping the Chicago White Sox 11-2, holding them to 7 hits in 9 innings while chalking up 6 strikeouts and 3 walks.

In the postgame interview, the modest Casey said, "It's special to win 250 games. You don't do it by yourself. You do it with good stuff and a good bullpen. You are only as good as the guys behind you. Years from now I might look back on it and give myself a little pat on the back."

In his career Casey has notched 250 wins and 203 losses and compiled a 3.13 ERA.

Athletics, Veteran Richmond Agree to Terms
Thursday, May 7th, 1896: Athletics fans were divided today as Philadelphia confirmed that the front office has signed Lee Richmond to a 4-year extension at a rate of $1,700 per year.

While many were enthusiastically behind the signing, others worried about Richmond's age.

In season stats Richmond shows a 6-2 record in 9 games, 76 innings, 20 strikeouts and a 2.25 ERA.

Ewing Collects Hit Number 2000
Thursday, June 18th, 1896: Colonels catcher Buck Ewing never thought his name would be associated with some of the great players in league history. Now that he has reached the 2000-hit threshold, that's all but guaranteed. Ewing collected his big hit in a 9-3 loss to Detroit.

Afterward, he thought about the achievement: "Overwhelmed," he said. "That's how I feel about it right now."

Ewing went 1-5 for the game.

Ewing's all-time stats include: 2000 hits, 352 doubles, 137 triples, 81 home runs and 1075 RBIs in 1755 games. He is batting .286 with 357 stolen bases and has scored 1208 runs.

Wise Beats Pirates for 400th Win
Wednesday, June 24th, 1896: His goal at twenty was to win twenty games one year, pitch until he was thirty, win the league pennant and to make some money. Well, Bill Wise did something even better -- the 35-year-old St. Louis Browns star has now won 400 games in his career. That put him in a very select group of pitchers.

He joined that exclusive club today at Exposition Park by whipping the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-9, holding them to 9 hits in 8 innings while chalking up no strikeouts and 5 walks.

In the postgame interview, the modest Wise said, "It's special to win 400 games. You don't do it by yourself. You do it with good stuff and a good bullpen. You are only as good as the guys behind you. Years from now I might look back on it and give myself a little pat on the back."

Wise has collected 400 wins and 235 losses over his career with a 2.23 ERA. The 35-year-old hurler also has struck out 3384 batters in 5687 innings and allowed 5387 hits.

Ramsey Tops Brooklyn 6-3 for 200th Win
Monday, August 3rd, 1896: Toad Ramsey of the Chicago Colts will go down as one of the league's legendary pitchers after his 6-3 win today against the Brooklyn Bridegrooms.

"It felt like it was a postseason game, one out at a time," said his manager. "It was something special to see."

The 31-year-old Ramsey picked up his 200th career victory at Eastern Park. He hurled 9 innings, gave up 10 hits and registered 3 strikeouts along with 1 walk.

"I've worked a long time for this," Ramsey said. "I can't believe it's really here. It feels great!"

Ramsey has crafted a 200-223 won-lost record in his career with a 3.18 ERA.

Baltimore Left Fielder Mansell Will Retire
Sunday, August 9th, 1896: Baltimore Orioles officials flanked Mike Mansell as he announced his retirement from pro baseball today. Rumors have had him on the verge of retirement since late last week but were not confirmed until today.

"I want to leave the game the way I came into it," said Mansell. "I don't want to become an embarrassment to myself and the team."

As far as career numbers Mansell has compiled a .271 batting average and collected 957 hits, 33 home runs and 462 RBIs.

Clubhouse Shenanigans May Cost Cleveland Players
Sunday, August 23rd, 1896: Cleveland teammates Jim McCormick and Charlie Hodnett are in hot water with manager Bill Murphy for a series of pranks aimed at other teammates and at one another. "These guys are adults," said the Spiders skipper. "And they're supposed to be professionals. Why they're acting like a couple of clowns is beyond me." According to Murphy, both players will be fined if the behavior continues. McCormick, however, doesn't understand why his manager is getting all worked up. "We're just having a little fun, blowing off some steam. He doesn't need to call us out in public. And fining us would be taking it way too far." Hodnett was slightly more diplomatic. "It's embarrasing to be singled out like that. I guess I need to take things a little more seriously from now."

Philadelphia Star Captures AL Bat Crown
Saturday, August 29th, 1896: Jesse Burkett of the Philadelphia Athletics was this year's best hitter in the American League. The 27-year-old left fielder collected the batting title with a .396 average. Playing in 124 games, the AL champ racked up 202 hits in 510 at-bats with 6 home runs and 82 RBIs.

Lajoie Makes History, Wins Triple Crown
Saturday, August 29th, 1896: Nap Lajoie of the Boston Beaneaters won the Triple Crown this year and went from a star to superstar. The 21-year-old second baseman won the batting title with a .374 BA, topped the NL in homers with 14 home runs and took home the RBI crown, too, with 129. For that outstanding performance he is the 2nd winner of this very prestigious award.

"A Triple Crown... that's amazing," said Lajoie, "You can't try and win a Triple Crown. A lot has to go right for it to happen. You have to be the best in three categories. And not just for five, ten games, but for a whole season. It's special. It's really special."

1896 Playoffs

NABL News: Playoffs begin
Saturday, August 29th, 1896: A playoff baseball game has a surreal atmosphere. Fans become one, roaring in unison at a great play and sharing the grief at blown opportunity. Victory and defeat play out in a rainbow of colors, sounds, smells and feelings. North American BaseBall League playoff baseball is a memorable experience. What is it like? Ask the 10-year-old sitting with his dad as he plucks a foul ball out of the air. Ask the veteran slugger who hits that walk-off home run. Ask the manager in the big game after coming from 10 games back to win the pennant. Ask the countless number of legends who have flourished or those greats who never won the big one. Chandler is a wealthy real estate mogul who recently purchased the team from Tsuramatsu Sanu. He promised New York Giants fans that he would put forth a first-class product on the field. Candidly assessing his own personal temperament and management style, Chandler told reporters, "I'm generous with my money and I'm quite lenient in working with people. I expect success -- that's the bottom line with me." New York finished 4th this past season in the National League with a team record of 65-67.

Last season the Louisville Colonels came in third in the American League with a 71-61 record. News
Dugan Wins Number 250
Thursday, April 22nd, 1897: His goal at twenty was to win twenty games one year, pitch until he was thirty, win the league pennant and to make some money. Well, Ed Dugan did something even better -- the 32-year-old Brooklyn Bridegrooms star has now won 250 games in his career. That put him in a very select group of pitchers.

He joined that exclusive club today at Eastern Park by whipping the Chicago Colts 6-5, holding them to 9 hits in 8 innings while chalking up 4 strikeouts and 3 walks.

In the postgame interview, the modest Dugan said, "It's special to win 250 games. You don't do it by yourself. You do it with good stuff and a good bullpen. You are only as good as the guys behind you. Years from now I might look back on it and give myself a little pat on the back."

Dugan has authored a 250-290 won-lost record in his career with a 2.89 ERA.

Mountain Beats Americans for 300th Win
Sunday, May 2nd, 1897: Frank Mountain of the Chicago White Sox will go down as one of the league's legendary pitchers after his 8-4 win today against the Boston Americans.

"It felt like it was a postseason game, one out at a time," said his manager. "It was something special to see."

The 36-year-old Mountain picked up his 300th career victory at Huntington Avenue Grounds. He hurled 9 innings, gave up 9 hits and registered 5 strikeouts along with 4 walks.

"I've worked a long time for this," Mountain said. "I can't believe it's really here. It feels great!"

In his career the 36-year-old Mountain has put up a 3.02 ERA and a 300-244 mark.

McKeon Defeats Phillies For #200
Monday, May 3rd, 1897: Larry McKeon entered the record books today as he collected win number 200 at Baker Bowl.

"Wow! This is a pretty select group of pitchers. I am honored and thrilled to be in it," McKeon said after the game. "I never dreamed of winning this many games."

In his historic outing he went 9 innings and gave up 6 runs on 6 hits. McKeon also had 5 strikeouts and 7 walks as his New York Giants topped the Philadelphia Phillies 8-6.

Through the years McKeon has fashioned a 200-160 mark, 3.16 ERA and thrown 3143 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .260 lifetime against him and he has logged 1377 career strikeouts.

Athletics Swartzel Earns 200th Win
Thursday, May 6th, 1897: It was a special day at Columbia Park for Philadelphia's Park Swartzel. The Athletics ace logged his 200th career win against the Americans. In the 7-2 decision Swartzel tossed 9 innings, surrendered 6 hits with 1 walk and 1 strikeout.

"I'm real fortunate that I had the opportunity to play with such good players during my career," said Swartzel. "I just couldn't have drawn it up any better. I'm glad I did it in this uniform, too. Philadelphia is a great organization to play for."

In his career Swartzel has totaled 200 victories and 127 defeats with a 2.77 ERA. The 31-year-old hurler also has struck out 1264 batters in 2874 innings and surrendered 2997 hits.

News
Quittin' Time: Shoch Retires
Tuesday, June 1st, 1897: Local papers are reporting that George Shoch of the St. Louis Browns will retire at season's end.

Shoch is hitting .277 lifetime with 759 hits, 114 doubles, 27 triples, 13 home runs and 394 RBIs to date. He has scored 425 runs and stolen 67 bases.

Bill Vinton Records Win #250
Tuesday, June 1st, 1897: What would you do after you had just won your 250th game? Run around Eclipse Park II doing cartwheels, jumping for joy and waving to the crowd? Well, maybe you and I would do that, but not Bill Vinton -- that's not his way.

After he notched number 250, the 32-year-old Louisville hurler spoke to the press like he always has -- in a soft, quiet voice. He wasn't doing any cartwheels or even anything resembling a jump for joy. "Obviously it feels very good," Vinton commented. "To win this many games, you've got to have a lot of help."

Vinton got his milestone victory by beating the Boston Americans 9-1. He held them to 2 hits in 9 innings and rung up 6 strikeouts with 8 walks.

After sharing his thoughts with the press, he went to the clubhouse. There he was greeted by the guys who had helped him get #250. His teammates showered him with champagne and then gave him a rousing round of applause. That got to him -- for the first time today, Vinton's face broke into a big smile.

In his career Vinton has fanned 2688 batters and walked 1455 in 4527 innings of work. His lifetime won-lost record is 250 victories and 271 defeats with a 2.78 ERA and opposing hitters have compiled a .245 against him.
