Games 112-113: Chicago White Sox vs. Boston Americans

The month of August is here and the Boston Americans finished up its series with the Chicago White Sox.

Game 112: The Americans (66-46) jumped out to an early lead and then had to hold on as the White Sox (49-63) made this a much closer game than it should have been in the 11 to 9 victory. Cy Young (15-12) did just enough to pick up the win, tossing 8 2/3 innings while allowing 9 runs (2 earned) on 10 hits while striking out 4 for a Game Score of 46. In a rather surprising move, Noodles Hahn came in for the final batter to earn his first save of the year. The losing pitcher was Willie Sudhoff (9-16) after allowing 6 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits and 3 walks over 6 innings of play; Game Score of 39. The Chicago bullpen effort was mixed, as George "Nig" Cuppy allowed 5 runs (4 earned) in 1 inning, while Bill Cristall allowed 0 runs in his 1 inning of play. Boston's scoring was led by Frank Chance (2 for 3, 2 Runs, 1 RBI, 2 Walks), Fred Clarke (2 for 4, 1 Run, 1 Walk, 1 Stolen Base), Jesse Hoffmeister (2 for 5, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI), and Kid Elberfeld (1 for 4, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs). Chicago was led by John Anderson (3 for 5, Double, Triple, 3 Runs, 1 RBI) and Mike Grady (2 for 4, Homerun, 1 Run, 3 RBIs) in the loss.

Player of the Game: Frank Chance (Season: #1 / Career: #1)

Game 113: A close game throughout, the White Sox (50-63) scored 2 runs in the 9th inning to win by a score of 4 to 2 over the Americans (66-47). Bill Carrick was the starting pitcher for Chicago, allowing 2 earned runs on 5 hits over 7 innings of play (Game Score of 60), but it was George "Nig" Cuppy (3-0) who picked up the win for his 2 innings of work. John Anderson (2 for 4, 1 RBI) and Mike Grady (2 for 3, Double, 1 RBI) provided the scoring support in the win. Fred Klobedanz (15-12) took the loss, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) while allowing 6 hits and 3 walks for a Game Score of 57. John Farrell (2 for 4, Double, 1 Run) and Harry Truby (1 for 4, 2 RBIs) played well in the loss.

Player of the Game: Bill Carrick

Games 114-116: Philadelphia Athletics vs. Boston Americans

The Americans welcomed the Philadelphia Athletics into the Bay State for a 3-game series that was crucial for Boston to do well in. Taking 2 of 3 games was nice but not enough to make the critical move towards the top.

Game 114: What a game by Noodles Hahn (19-12), as he allowed just 2 hits and 1 run (0 earned) to lead Boston (67-47) to a 3 to1 victory over the Athletics (43-71). In picking up the win, Hahn struck out 6 while tossing just 92 pitches for a Game Score of 87. Philadelphia pitcher Earl Moore (5-23) pitched decent in the loss, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) while giving up 9 hits and 2 walks for a Game Score of 55. The Americans were led by Win Mercer (2 for 4, Triple, 1 RBI), Bill Lange (2 for 4, 1 Run, 1 RBI, 1 Stolen Base), and Ossee Schreckengost (2 for 2, 1 Run, 1 Walk).

Player of the Game: Noodles Hahn (Season: #20 / Career: #20)

Game 115: What an effort by both starting pitchers, as they continued to face batters into the 13th inning. When it was all said and done, the Athletics (44-71) topped the Americans (67-48) by a score of 5 to 3. Philadelphia pitcher Mal Eason (13-8) picked up the win by tossing 193 pitches over 12 1/3 innings in which he allowed 3 earned runs on 11 hits and 2 walks for a Game Score of 72. Closer Bill Reidy got the final 2 outs to earn his 5th save of the season. Boston pitcher Jesse Tannehill (18-10) took the loss after allowing 5 runs (3 earned) over 13 innings in which he threw an astounding 212 pitches for a Game Score of 66. Mike Kelley (2 for 5, 2 Doubles, 2 RBIs), George Magoon (3 for 5, Double, 2 Runs), and Tom McCreery (2 for 5, 2 Runs, 1 Walk) led the offense punch for the winning team. Jesse Hoffmeister (3 for 4, Double, 3 RBIs), Bill Lange (3 for 7, 2 Runs), and Sport McAllister (2 for 2) played well in the loss.

Player of the Game: Mal Eason

Game 116: Boston needed a big outing from starting pitcher Cy Young and they got just that. Young (16-12) allowed 1 run (0 earned) on 8 hits for a Game Score of 72 to lead the Americans (68-48) to a 4 to 1 victory over the Athletics (44-72). Doc McJames (8-11) took the loss due to allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits and 2 walks; Game Score of 60. Frank Chance (2 for 3, 1 Run) and John Farrell (1 for 2, 1 Run, 1 Walk) contributed to the victory. Socks Seybold (2 for 4, Double) and Tom McCreery (2 for 4, Double) played well in the loss.

Player of the Game: Cy Young (Season: #13 / Career: #13)

Pennant Chase

The 1901 Pennant Race is on and several teams are batting for the top spot. In the American League, The Blues (35% chance) and the Americans (4.5% chance) are in a struggle for taking the top spot from the Tigers (60.3% chance). The opponent schedule strength is most favorable to the Tigers (.473) and least favorable to the Senators (.503).

In the National League, the Cardinals (14.3% chance - opponents strength of schedule .483) are facing an uphill challenge of taking over the Beaneaters (85.6% chance - opponents strength of schedule .478).

Game Performance: Rube Waddell

What a performance by Rube Waddell. Despite taking the loss, Waddell set an American League and MLB record for 15 K's in a 9 inning game. While his team will not make the playoffs, Waddell is the overwhelming favorite to win the Platinum Pitcher Award.

Player of the Game: Noodles Hahn (Season: #21 / Career: #21)
