Cards news: July 24 -- SP Blake Snell placed on IL with back issue
The St. Louis Cardinals have placed starting pitcher Blake Snell on the 15-day injured list after he suffered back spasms during a 5-1 win over Arizona on July 20.
Signed to a five-year, $108M contract during the offseason, Snell's first season in St. Louis has been a bit of a disappointment coming off a Cy Young-winning campaign in 2023 with San Diego. In 19 starts this season, Snell has gone 5-9 with a 3.85 ERA with seven quality starts. He is expected to miss at least five weeks. |

Cards news: July 25 -- Birds swap lefty relievers with Toronto
The St. Louis Cardinals have made a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays, acquiring left-handed relief pitcher Joely Rodriguez in exchange for lefty reliever Matt Moore.
Rodriguez, 32, in his first season with the Jays has pitched in 31 games going 6-4 with one save and a 3.44 ERA. Signed as an international free agent in 2009 by the Phillies, Rodriguez reached the majors in 2016 with Philadelphia. Since then, he has pitched for Texas (2020-21), the Yankees (2021-22), Boston (2023) and Toronto. For his career, he has pitched in 199 games, all in relief, and posted a record of 11-13 with two saves and a 4.46 ERA. Rodriguez will be arbitration eligible after the season after making $1.7M this season. Signed to a free-agent contract paying him $3.2 million before the start of the season, Moore has been a disappointment while in St. Louis. He pitched in 31 games going 1-1 with a 4.70 ERA. Moore will be a free agent at season's end. |

Cards news: July 27 -- Stunning trade sends 1B Paul Goldschmidt to Seatttle for IF Brandon Drury
The St. Louis Cardinals have announced they have trade first baseman Paul Goldschmidt to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for infielder Brandon Drury.
The 2022 National League Most Valuable Player, Goldschmidt has seen a dramatic drop off in his performance this season hitting just .238 with 10 home runs and 41 RBIs through 92 games/91 starts. His batting average is a 30-point drop from the 2023 season -- which also saw a significant dip from his MVP year in 2022 -- while his slugging percentage has dipped 81 points. Combined with a career-high strike-out rate of 27.5 percent. Goldschmidt, 36, will be a free agent in the off-season. In Drury, 31, the Cardinals get an infielder who can play first, second and third base. This season, he has batted .268 with 17 home runs and 53 RBIs in 90 games/87 starts for the Mariners. Drafted in the 13th round in 2010 by the Braves, Drury broke into the majors in 2015 with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Well-traveled over the course of his career, Drury has played with Arizona (2015-27), Toronto (2018), the Yankees (2018), Toronto (2019-20), the Mets (2021), San Diego (2022), Cincinnati (2022), the Los Angeles Angels (2023) and this season with the Mariners. For his career, Drury is a .256 hitter with 122 home runs and 413 RBIs. He is making $8.5 million this season and will be a free agent when the season ends. |

Cards news: July 27 -- Birds land SP Marcus Stroman for minor league infielder Irving Lopez
The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired starting pitcher Marcus Stroman from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for minor-league infielder Irving Lopez.
Signed by Giants in the offseason, Stroman has gone 7-7 with a 4.01 ERA in 21 starts this season. For his career, Stroman, 33, is 84-83 with one save and a 3.68 ERA in 252 games/244 starts. Stroman signed a one-year deal with San Francisco worth $21 million in the offseason. He will be a free agent in 2025. Lopez, 29, was acquired by St. Louis when they selected him in the 19th round of the 2017 draft. He has spent the entire 2024 season at AAA Memphis, hitting .229 with eight home runs and 21 RBIs in 75 games/55 starts.
