The 1916 World Series: Detroit Tigers vs. New York Giants
Results Game 1, October 8th, 1916, the Polo Grounds Joss, Giants Take Dramatic Game 1 for 1-0 Series Lead The New York Giants took the first game of the World Series in dramatic fashion today, topping the Detroit Tigers 4-3 in an extra-inning walk-off win. Giants right-hander Addie Joss threw 8.0 innings of 5-hit ball. In the bottom of the 11th, Chief Meyers came to bat with the game in the balance. And he delivered, hitting a 2-run single off Detroit pitcher Jimmy Dygert. "By the skin of our teeth, man," Meyers told the New York Bulletin. "But hey, it still counts. A few more by the skin of our teeth is fine with me." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at the Polo Grounds in New York. Giants lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 9th, 1916, the Polo Grounds New York Tops Detroit Again, 1-0 Art Nehf pitched a gem to help the New York Giants escape with a tight 1-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers in a low-scoring World Series contest today. The left-handed Nehf threw 9.0 innings of shutout ball in the win, just enough for the Giants on a day when their offense dried up. New York now leads the best-of-7 series 2-0. In his 117-pitch effort, Nehf allowed no runs on 3 hits over 9 innings. He walked 2 and struck out 4. Tigers manager Ned Hanlon did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the World Series." The next game is set to be played for October 11th, 1916 at Navin Field in Detroit. Giants lead series 2-0 Game 3, October 11th, 1916, Navin Field Giants Win to Extend Series Lead to 3-0 Riding the 3-hit performance of catcher Lew McCarty, the New York Giants got a road win against the Detroit Tigers, 10-4, in Game 3 of the World Series today. McCarty went 3-4 with a triple, a double, and a walk, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2 for the Giants, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 3 games to 0. New York used the clutch hitting of Del Pratt to capture the win. The second baseman drilled a run-scoring double in the top of the ninth inning to give the Giants the lead, 5-4. For the game, Pratt had 2 singles and 1 double in 4 at-bats. "Every team in baseball loses," Tigers manager Ned Hanlon said. "We're in the playoffs and we still have the same guys that got us here. We'll bounce back." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Navin Field in Detroit. Game 4, October 12th, 1916, Navin Field New York Sweeps World Series Sometimes the winner is the one who got the lucky bounces and the lucky calls, and sometimes the winner is just the one who played better. It was the latter case in 1916, as the New York Giants topped the Detroit Tigers 5-2 tonight at Navin Field to win the World Series. It was the 1st title in franchise history. "When you play for championships, you have to play better than the team in the other dugout. We did that in this series, and all year. Now we're the best team in baseball," said New York catcher Lew McCarty, who was named series MVP. The Giants took the series 4-0. The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the NL and a 101-53 record. New York manager George Davis grinned and nodded when asked to comment on McCarty's words. "Lew said it best -- we played better than the other team," the skipper said. Hometown officials announced they were already planning a "grand celebration" for the winners in the days to come. Giants win series 4-0 Series MVP: Lew McCarty |

I see from your 1916 standing overview that you have got caught by the OOTP historical problem when playing with recalc (which I assume you are), that being if you don't watch players, especially early players pre 1920 who had their last year a super star year will never recalc out of that great year, and will just stay with those numbers until they are 60 or 70 years old,
as you are seeing with Ed Delehanty and Bill Hamilton for example. That has been a problem with the recalc historical game for as long as I have been playing it (15 years now), I have to track all these guys manually and reduce their ratings after their final season. Bill Kiester for example is another of these who can just go on and on into superstar land until tehy are 70 years old if you don't stay on top of it. Don't know if the issue will ever be addressed, go into your main player list and see how many star players you have over the age of 40 that should have realistically retired a long time before as an example of it |
