2038 Prospect Preview

KC Top Prospects

There is a bit of a gap in the Royals system between almost ready players – seven across the MLB and AAA rosters – and low level players – 12 across the Rookie and A ball levels.

This will, therefore, be an important year for those lower level players to continue to progress in order to be at the AA/AAA level starting 2039.

MLB Top Prospects

It should be another exciting year for baseball with five of the top 16 prospects starting in MLB, including the top two players, both infielders. Trade acquisition Joe Davis is the Royals lone representative.

MLB Farm Systems

The Royals system deep with 20 players in the top 250, and 5 in the top 100, but lacks real star quality at the moment.

Minor Leagues

Northwest Arkansas Naturals fans believe they've got a talented young star in Laban Locascio.

He did nothing to dissuade that notion in April, as he hit .379 with 8 home runs, 23 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

The end result was the center fielder being named the Texas League Batter of the Month.

When you hit the baseball as well as Jesus Aguilar did in May, it's no surprise when you get named the Texas League Batter of the Month.

The Northwest Arkansas Naturals standout terrorized opposing pitchers all month long, to the tune of a .352 batting average, with 9 home runs, 21 RBIs, 18 runs scored and a .454 on-base percentage.

So far this year, Aguilar has 13 home runs and a .316 batting average.

Minor Leagues

Mike Murphy of the Omaha Storm Chasers had a field day with International League pitchers last month and was crowned the Batter of the Month as a result.

During June he compiled a .355 batting average, drove in 32 runs and scored 23 times. He also managed to pick up 13 walks to post a .424 on-base percentage.

So far this season, Murphy has gotten 107 hits in 301 at-bats for a .355 batting average with 20 home runs. His stats include 62 RBIs and 56 runs scored. He has played in 74 games.

In June, Esteban Medina beat the baseball like a drum the entire month and netted the Texas League Batter of the Month award.

In 20 games the Northwest Arkansas center fielder hit .407 with 10 home runs, 22 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

So far this year, Medina is hitting .321 with 25 home runs.

This month the Texas League spotlight fell on pitcher TP Bender of the Northwest Arkansas Naturals.

What a June he had!

A fine 5-0 won-lost record, 0.56 ERA, 5 starts, 32.1 innings pitched and 39 strikeouts -- good enough to get him the TL Pitcher of the Month.

Currently Bender has a record of 9-0 with 99 strikeouts and 37 walks in 86 innings and a 1.36 ERA.

Last month was a very good one for Jorge Castillo of Quad Cities. So good that he has been picked as the Pitcher of the Month in the Midwest League.

Castillo throttled league hitters the entire month, completing June with an impressive 4-1 mark and a 1.95 ERA in 5 starts with 33 strikeouts in 27.2 innings.

Over the season Castillo has thrown 55.1 innings and dished out 67 strikeouts with a 5-1 mark and a 1.79 ERA.

Josh Hooper has a lot going for him. The Kansas City (ACL) catcher just broke into the majors this year and now the Arizona Complex League has just picked him as its top hitter for June.

In 23 games last month this outstanding rookie batted .406 with 6 home runs, 22 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

This year, Hooper is batting .363 with 45 hits and 9 home runs. He has scored 28 times and has batted in 35 runs.

The Royals had four All Stars, including recent acquisition Juan Soreni.

• SP Curt Bogans (KC) - 9-4, 2.91 ERA, 117.1 IP, 1.12 WHIP, 10.4 K/9, 3.4 WAR
• RP Jimmy Lininger (KC)* - 6-3, 2.24 ERA, 52.1 IP, 1.26 WHIP, 9.6 K/9, 1.2 WAR
• C Sam Hart (KC) - .281/.355/.516, 256 AB, 14 HR, 132 wRC+, 3.0 WAR
• 2B Edgar Mir (KC)* - .256/.372/.473, 317 AB, 14 HR, 22 SB, 126 wRC+, 3.0 WAR
• CF Juan Soreni (KC) - .294/.384/.672, 201 AB, 21 HR, 177 wRC+, 3.6 WAR

Lininger gave up a solo home run in his inning of work while Bogans didn’t get into the game. Mir was 0-2 with a walk, Hart came into the game defensively in the 9th while Soreni’s injury prevented him from appearing.

While the bats aren’t lighting up baseball, there is enough from Hart (132 wRC+), Mir (123 wRC+), and Billy Mumaugh (121 wRC+), with the hope the Soreni (176 wRC+) can continue his great season to offset any concerns over Foggie (77 wRC+), Rogerson (87 wRC+), Pompey (92 wRC+), and Goodman (92 wRC+).

The starting rotation has been strong despite injuries and the sharp increase in walks allowed by Brad Demarest, which has limited his effectiveness (122 FIP-).

The bullpen is led by offseason acquisition Kataoka (27 saves) and regular season star Lininger (1.2 WAR), while the only concerns are keeping arms fit after several injuries in the first half of the year.

Owner Goals

Team Record:
Things are moving in the right direction and it looks like we have the talent to hit our preseason goal of making the playoffs. Our fans will be counting on us to push the team to get it done, so do what you have to do to make the postseason happen.

Extend your player:
I appreciate your work in convincing Jeremy Sidener to sign an extension. It's important to keep our top players, and I'm glad that you agree with me. He's really grown on me as a player.

Acquire a player:
I love it when you put in effort to satisfy the goals I set out for you. That's why it's so disappointing to see you completely ignoring my request to acquire a Hometown player. Make an effort to reach this goal, or the next thing you may need to do is update your CV.

Build your farm:
We may not be in a rebuild, but that doesn't mean you can ignore our prospects. Having a great minor league system will go a long way to keeping our team at the top of the standings. And from the looks of it, you definitely have not ignored them. Well done.

Improve your fan interest:
I don't think we're reaching our fans in the right way.

Improve your team record:
I was hoping for better results in close games. Please keep working on it.

2038 Draft

The last pick of the first round saw the Royals take a swing on HS 2B Steve Bakke from the Bronx. While his defense will need work, his combination of high WE and Intelligence give him a good chance at development success and reaching his projected plus contact and eye to go with a plus plus power and speed.

Name: K1 Steve Bakke.jpg

Size: 353.5 KB

The Royals next five picks (including their supplemental pick for Azeem declining his qualifying offer) were:

• Round 1 (Suppl.), Pick 4 - SP Darryel Sabatino, age 20 out of college (Old Dominion University)
• Round 2, Pick 32 - CF Chris Morrow, age 18 out of high school
• Round 3, Pick 28 - SP Houston Duffus, age 21 out of college (Louisiana Tech University)
• Round 4, Pick 28 - SS Chris Ambrose, age 17 out of high school
• Round 5, Pick 30 - C Mike Woods, age 18 out of high school

The whole class will start in Rookie ball while only one player, 15th round pick Gilberto Barrera was unsigned.

In a class stacked with bats, it was a pitcher who was taken with the first overall pick, but bats followed in the remainder of the top five:

• Round 1, Pick 1 - Miami Marlins: SP Suljo Mirkovic, age 20 out of college (Crowley's Ridge College)
• Round 1, Pick 2 - Tampa Bay Rays: 2B Bobby Paulin, age 18 out of high school
• Round 1, Pick 3 - Detroit Tigers: SS Bailey Nartey, age 20 out of college (Lipscomb University)
• Round 1, Pick 4 - Washington Nationals: CF Morton Henrik, age 21 out of college (William Peace University)
• Round 1, Pick 5 - Pittsburgh Pirates: LF Jaheim Champ, age 21 out of college (Arizona State University)

Transactions & Injuries

Friday, July 2nd , 2038
LF Billy Mumaugh was injured while running the bases. The Diagnosis: hip strain. He's expected to miss about 2-3 weeks.
Purchased the contract of 2B Jimmy Monroe from Triple A Omaha.
Friday, July 16th , 2038
SP Min-ho Kim was injured while pitching. The diagnosis is not yet known.
Sunday, July 18th , 2038
SP Min-ho Kim diagnosed with a herniated disc, will miss 3 months.
Purchased the contract of RP Chris Wagner from Triple A Omaha.
Monday, July 19th , 2038
Sent LF Billy Mumaugh to Triple A Omaha for injury rehab.
Thursday, July 22nd , 2038
Optioned C Andy Alexander to Triple A Omaha.
Purchased the contract of C Mike Murphy from Triple A Omaha.
Thursday, July 29th , 2038
Traded 24-year old minor league 1B Juan Monrroy and 23-year old 2B Jimmy Monroe to the Boston Red Sox, getting 26-year old RF Mike Connelly, 17-year old minor league LF David Amaya, and $1,000,000 in cash in return.
Placed LF Mike Connelly on the active roster.

Two major moves in July as the Royals lose Min-ho Kim for the rest of the regular season (and maybe the playoffs) to a herniated disk while they bolster their outfield with a trade deadline deal with the Red Sox.

Mike Connolly is a former Rookie of the Year and 2038 All Star heading into his arbitration years. The Royals give up AAAA Jimmy Monroe and potential AAAA prospect Juan Monrroy. In addition to Connolly, the Royals pick up 2037 International Amateur David Amaya, a plus plus contact outfielder who is likely trade bait rather than the future of the Royals unless he shows some power potential in the near future.

Minor Leagues

B.J. Heaton of Omaha had an award-winning July as he took home the International League Pitcher of the Month award.

"He told me once people used to make fun of the way he pitches," Heaton's pitching coach told reporters. "There wasn't anybody laughing in July except for B.J.."

Heaton was all business when he took the mound though, collecting a 4-0 record in 5 starts. He struck out 39 batters in 36.2 innings and kept opponents to a .190 batting average.

This season, Heaton has 12 wins and 2 losses and a 3.24 ERA.

July was a very productive month for Jorge Medrano, and today the Kansas City (DSL) shortstop was rewarded with the Dominican Rookie League Batter of the Month honors.

He clobbered enemy hurlers for a .456 average, 9 home runs, and 40 RBIs and scored 40 runs.

Medrano is hitting at a .426 mark this season. His stats show 14 home runs, 64 RBIs and 63 runs scored. He has played 42 games for the Royals Stewart.

The Pitcher of the Month Award has been selected and the Dominican Rookie League winner is Kansas City (DSL) relief specialist, Frank Ramirez. For his fine work in July he has been named the league's foremost pitcher.

During the month, he excelled with 1 save in 2 save opportunities, a 1.61 ERA and 5 wins and no losses. In 22.1 innings Ramirez struck out 24 and gave up 23 hits and 16 walks.

Fans are still buzzing after Kansas City whipped the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 10-3 at Kauffman Stadium.

Bob Crimi smashed three home runs in the contest, a feat that would be a career highlight for most players and few fans ever see. In a tremendous performance, the first baseman bashed out 3 hits in 4 at-bats, had 5 RBIs and scored 3 times.

At the postgame press conference, Crimi said it was an "unbelievable" feeling to hit three home runs in a game.

"Getting one homer is special, and two is great," Crimi said. "Three is just... wow."

Bob Crimi struck out in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off Amari Ravenell in the 4th, hit a two-run home run off Chris Casteen in the 5th and hit a solo-shot off Andy Squires in the 7th.

This season, Crimi is batting .262 with 44 hits, 14 home runs, 31 RBIs, .332 OBP and has scored 28 runs.

What's in a number? In baseball, just about everything.

The numbers that Kansas City's Mike Connelly put up last week were the envy of the league, as Connelly came away with American League Player of the Week honors.

He belted out 10 hits in 20 at-bats, 3 home runs and 10 RBIs last week as he posted his .500 batting average.

To date, Connelly has collected 121 hits for a .292 average. He has posted 21 home runs, scored 85 runs and driven in 64 runs.

The Royals shut out the Braves on the final day of the season to secure back-to-back 100-win seasons although it is only good enough for the second best record in the AL behind the Avalanche. The AL Central supplies three teams to the playoffs.

The Dodgers lead the National League, with the NL West matching the AL Central in sending three teams to the playoffs.

The Royals will take on the Yankees or the Guardians in the Division Series. This is the second chance in a row for a first post-season match up of the AL Central rivals while the Yankees and Royals have met on five previous occasions, with the Royals sweeping the ALCS in the most recent match up in 2032.
