Around The Town In The IPA

Claxton Diamonds

Owner: DeBeers Mining Company
GM/Manager: Stacy Engel

Claxton is a company town, a mining town of 107,000 in the southwestern foothills of the Silver Mountains, famous for its very high quality diamond industry. DeBeers, the world's largest diamond company, has a branch in Ruthlandia, where the ultimate diamonds are mined, cut, polished and processed, then distributed to the four corners of the world.

Claxton Diamonds are very much in demand worldwide because of their very fine quality. Gold and silver mining is also a vital part of the town's and Ruthlandia's economy. Claxton is a hardworking, blue collar town, who really love their baseball team, the Claxton Diamonds.

The club is owned by DeBeers and play their games at gorgeous Avalon Stadium, built by DeBeers as a showcase stadium in 1990, complete with a scenic view of the Silver Mountains. The Avalon Casino is located in center field and is one of the most popular in the Islands. World famous entertainers appear regularly there.

DeBeers sponsors a "Lucky Diamond" sign on the right side of the left field scoreboard. DeBeers starts off each season with diamonds worth $1000 in the pot and increases it by $1000 each game, until someone wins it. Whenever a Claxton batter hits that Ace of Diamond card, the player wins whatever is in the Diamond Jackpot and a lucky fan is also a jackpot winner, too. The lucky fan is chosen by the lucky scorecard number. During the fourth inning stretch it is a Diamonds' tradition for the ladies at the game to sing "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend". A diamond is given away at each game to some lucky lady. In the seventh inning everybody joins in for the traditional "Take Me Out to the Ballgame". At the concession stands you can feast on hot dogs, hamburgers, cokes, beer, peanuts and crackerjacks.

The Claxton Diamonds are run by longtime baseball man known throughout the Islands as "The Old Perfessor". Stacy Engel is both GM and Manager. Engel holds the record for the most industrial league titles with the DeBeers company team. The Diamonds are in the Ruthlandian Union and play in the South Division.

2018 IPA Pro Cup Playoffs

Ruthlandian Union Elite 8 Series

Rocky Rapids Rocks Eastshore Late 6-3
The Rocky Rapids Snappers took a giant step in the RU Elite 8 Series with defending Pro Cup champion Eastshore with late-inning rallies to knock off the Elegants 6-3 at Snapper Stadium... the victory was the Snappers third in in a row and gave them a 3-1 edge in the best-of-seven series... Rocky Rapids trailed 3-1 going into the home half of the seventh... Danny Siegfried seemed to be in control, when a double, single and an error, a passed ball and a sac fly knotted the score at 3-all... in the eighth another Eastshore error and 2B Paul Shelton's 2-run single gave the Snappers the game... the Elegants committed 4 miscues in the game... winning pitcher Junior Noland (1-0 2.12) toughed it out... Eastshore tagged him for 3 runs in the first three innings, but he stiffened up and shut them out over the final 6 frames... Noland allowed 5 hits, whiffed 4 and walked 2 in going the route... closer Paul Walker (0-1 0.00) lost it by giving up 3 unearned run in his only inning... Rocky Rapids racked up 13 hits and were led by Shelton (.294) with 2 hits and 3 RBIs and LF Scott Camden (.333) with 3 hits and 3 runs scored.

McKay's HR Ties Claxton-Ancona Series At 2-2
In game four, Claxton got a pair of homers late to defeat Ancona 4-3 to tie up the RU Elite 8 Series at two games piece... the Diamonds entered the 8th down to Clete Dukas and the Red Elephants 3-1, but LF George McKay (.462) cracked a homer for the fourth game in a row to knot the game at 3-3... K. C. Moerdijk's (.267) followed with solo clout to bring home the victory for the Diamonds... Kaz Hayagawa (1-1 5.52) notched the win with the help of Tony Haverkamp... Hayagawa tossed 8 innings and surrendered 3 runs and 7 hits with 5 strikeouts and no walks... Haverkamp retired the Red Elephants in order for the save... losing pitcher Clete Dukas (1-1 3.18) went all the way, gave up only 4 hits, but 2 of them were homers.

Torres Tops Turon Again, Z's Up 3-1
In a match-up of two of the best hurlers in the IPA, Tiago Torres of Luxora topped Nicky Engstrom of Turon 3-1 to capture game four of the best-of-seven series giving the Zorros a surprising three-to-one lead in the TU Elite 8 Series... the Typhoons are one of the favorites for the Pro Cup this season... Torres (2-0 2.25) went 8 innings and yielded only 1 run on 6 hits... Engstrom (0-2 3.00) went all the way in defeat, striking out 8 and issuing 2 walks, while allowing 9 hits... Jay Brewer came on to seal the verdict with a 1-2-3 ninth for his second playoff save this year... Zorro CF Francisco Ortego (.316) singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh, breaking the 1-1 tie... 2B Billy Whitney (.375) got them an insurance run with an RBI single in the eighth.

Ozarka's Osterman Fires 2-Hit Shutout, Ties Bucs
Ozarka's ace Benny Osterman fired a splendid 2-hit shutout and beat Bay St. Clair 3-0 with the help of a 3-run homer by SS Nat Ferrell (.667) in the top of the second inning, the only runs in the game... Osterman (2-0 1.00) totaled 8 Ks with 2 walks and outdueled Dean Dailey (0-2 4.20), who also pitch the whole game, permitting 7 hits and 3 runs... the Nats victory in game four gave them a split in the series so far.

Thank you for sharing the comment. It is much appreciated.

I really enjoy this league, too.

I was born in northwest Alabama and lived a lot of my life in Mobile.
I used to live and die with the Crimson Tide in the 50's on Saturdays listening to the play-by-play by Maury Farrell and John Forney. I remember Bart Starr when he played for bad Bama teams. But Bear Bryant got them going in the late '50s and made them into a dynasty.

2018 IPA Pro Cup Playoffs

Ruthlandian Union Elite 8 Series

Elegants Still Alive, Stop Snappers 7-2 In Game 5
The Eastshore Elegants needed somebody to step up big time... They were on the edge of extermination in the RU Elite 8 Series with Rocky Rapids, trailing three games to one... Bix Hansen didn't come into the stadium riding on a white horse and wearing a white hat, but he certainly played the hero part and kept Eastshore's hopes for a third successive Pro Cup alive by throttling the Snappers 7-2 in game 5 at Snapper Stadium... Hansen (1-1 2.65) held them to 6 hits and blanked them until the ninth... lousy defense played a part in the game... Rocky Rapids made 4 errors and gave up 5 unearned runs... Eastshore put 5 big ones on the scoreboard in the second inning and never looked back... 21-game winner Joe Anderson (1-1 2.08) sustained the loss, allowing 6 runs in 5 innings, but only 2 were earned... RF Stan Cuccinello (.300) and SS Art Parker (.286) led the Elegants with 2 RBIs each... 3B Bob Leach (.353) had a solo homer for Eastshore... RF Larry Hollis (.300) provided all of the Snappers runs with a 2-run homer.

Diamonds Nip Ancona 8-7 On Lowe's HR In 11th
Game 5 was a homer-filled thriller at Avalon Stadium in Claxton with 7 homers... the Diamonds and the Ancona Red Elephants went back-and-forth for 11 innings before LF Benton Lowe smashed one into the stands to give Claxton an 8-7 triumph and a one-game edge in the RU Elite 8 Series... the Diamonds led 3-0 after one... Ancona tied them up 3-3 in the third... Claxton went up 6-3 after seven... only to have the Red Elephants jump back in the lead 7-6 in the top of the ninth... the Diamonds managed to tie it again in the bottom of the ninth to send it into extra innings... the victory went to George Ferguson (1-0 0.00) with two flawless frames... Ferguson retired all 6 batters he faced in the tenth and eleventh innings... Nick Rasenko (0-1) was nailed with loss... Rasenko blew the save by surrendering the tying in the ninth and then served up Lowe's game-winning blast... the Diamonds cracked 4 out of the park... In addition to Lowe, RF K. C. Moerdijk (.300), LF George McKay (.471) and CF Tommy Rivers (.214) went deep... it was the fifth game in a row McKay has homered... the Red Elephants rapped 3 into the stands with LF Kenny Willard (.174), RF Louie DiMucci (.400) and RF Duane Godfrey (.200) each getting one... Ancona had 12 hits and Claxton 11.

Turon Cuts Z's Lead To 3-2 In TU Elite 8
The Turon Typhoons broke out with 14 hits in game 5 of the TU Elite 8 Series to thrash the Luxora Zorros 9-6 at De la Vega Stadium and cut the Z's lead to three games to two... LF Andy Porter (.636) sparked the win with 5 hits and 3 RBIs, including his 2nd home run in the series... C Cory Moore (.500) also had 2 hits and 3 RBIs and RF Dominick DiCaprio (.316) delivered 2 hits and 2 runs batted in... Moore and 1B Clyde Kingsford also chipped in roundtrippers... Luxora was led by 3B Pablo Santa Cruz (.222) with 2 hits and 2 RBIs and 1B Robby Christianson (.235) with a solo homer... Winning pitching Shane Farmer (1-1 7.04) weathered 12 hits and went all the way, though he gave up 6 runs... Zorro starter Steve Aaron was raked for 5 runs in his 3 innings for the loss... the Typhoons put up a 6-1 lead after 5 and then held on as the Z's rallied with 3 in the sixth and 1 in the eighth, narrowing it to 6-5... however Turon made it 9-5 in the top of ninth to beat back Luxora's belated rally.

Bucs Take Series Lead, Coates Beats Nats 6-3
The Bay St. Clair Buccaneers got a strong mound job by Benny Coates, who stumped the Ozarka Naturals 6-3 in game 5... the victory gave the Bucs a three-to-two edge in the TU Elite 8 Series... Coates (2-0 1.53) pitched into the ninth and gave up 3 runs and 8 hits for his second victory in the series... Steve Richt came in with two outs and got the save... the defeat went to Ted Cardinale (0-2 6.94), who was routed after 4 innings... the Buccaneers got to him for 6 runs and 7 hits... pacing the Bay St. Clair attack were CF Bill Howell (.375) with a two-run two-bagger in the opening frame and SS Jimmy Sawyer with a two-run clout in the third... that gave them a 6-0 cushion after just 3 innings... the Bucs outhit the Nats 9 to 8... pinchhitter James Mack homered in defeat.

LUXORA ZORROS

Owner: De la Vega Foundation
GM/Manager: Rodrigo Alejandro

Luxora is a picturesque town of 65,000 people of Spanish and Andorran ancestry located in the Silver Mountains of northeastern Tycobbia. Both Spanish and English are spoken there. Snowy winters and mild summers lure tourists from all over, who come in great numbers to enjoy the natural hot thermal springs and spas, snow skiing, snowboarding, whitewater rafting and the wonderful duty-free bazaar overflowing with electronics, luxury goods and fine handmade clothing made from the famous Luxoran wool in the town textile factory. Everywhere in the area you will see a plethora of sheep ranches, along with timber, lumber and wood products which are processed and manufactured there.

Luxora benefits greatly from its proximity to the Rio Loco, a wild and raging river and a source of great hydroelectric power. By way of a series of dams and locks the river flows from high in the mountains, skirting the town on its western journey through the foothills before finally flowing into the sky blue waters of Blue Lake near Fairfax. As a result, it is the headquarters of the Tycobbia Electric Authority. Luxora itself is a modest town steeped in traditional ways. It has narrow streets and plazas in which to get happily lost among the grand and ancient churches and mansions. Because of the cultural tradition of “siestas”, Spanish-owned companies give their employees time off each day so they can attend the local team’s games with their families, a practice and custom that soon spread to all of the townships in baseball-crazed Tycobbia and Ruthlandia.

It is also the home of the Luxora Zorros (“foxes” in Spanish) of the Islandian Pro Alliance. The Z's are a member of the Tycobbian Union East Division. Luxora plays at De la Vega Stadium (affectionately called “The Foxhole” by the locals), named for Don Diego de la Vega, aka Zorro, the legendary black clad hero who fought royal despotism during the 1800’s and eventually led the Tycobbian people to freedom. His descendants, wealthy landowners with a huge sheep and Arabian horse farms, are the owners of the team. Of course you can see Zorro atop his wondrous black stallion, Toronado (Spanish for “tornado”), galloping around the stadium to the cheers of the crowd as they rally the home team to victory. A splendid mariachi band serenades and provides a festive atmosphere at all the games. You can also enjoy the Spanish delicacies at the concessions stands: cunillo (succulent rabbit cooked in tomato sauce), escudello (a fantastic chicken, sausage and meatball stew), and fried ice cream, too. Traditional ballpark food is provided as well.

Even the Manager and GM of the Zorros is of Spanish descent. Rodrigo Alejandro, an outstanding power hitter and shortstop as an amateur, was the highest paid “amateur” ever in company league circles. Many say Alejandro was the best home run hitter in the Islands history.

EASTSHORE ELEGANTS

Owner: Clark and Vivien Butler of Tara Plantation, Inc.
GM/Manager: Killer Brewster

Eastshore is a town of 85,000 on the southeast coast of Ruthlandia, situated on the Valerian Ocean, just 50 miles east of Crystal Lake. It was settled by emigres from the American South in the 1870s, who were disillusioned by the post Civil War problems. Agriculture has always been the backbone of the Eastshore economy because of the perfect climate for growning cotton. Cotton is king in Eastshore. The port of Eastshore is one of the Islands busiest and is also a vital part of the area's economy.

Southern charm and hospitality are a way of life here in Eastshore. One would think they were in Savannah or Charleston in the United States, instead of a world away. Moonlight, magnolias and mint juleps are still in vogue at the many plantation homes that inundate the farmlands in the area. The "Old South" is alive and well in Eastshore.

But modern day Eastshore is more friendly than formal. Whoever you are, wherever you're from, you'll be welcomed with true Southern hospitality. Hip and historic, robust and refined, Eastshore is where you'll find amazing architecture, spooky cemeteries and rich history, along with global sophistication, funky night life and fabulous food. It's where history resonates into the present day and where memories are still being made.

Like all of the towns in Islandia, Eastshore loves its baseball and has since it first began in the late 1890s. The community has supported town ball, amateur leagues and industrial leagues down through the years and now have a professional team. The proud owners of the IPA Eastshore Elegants are Clark and Vivian Butler, who own the Tara Plantation, one of the largest cotton plantations in Ruthlandia.

Running the Elegants is renowned hard-hitting slugger of the company leagues, Killer Brewster, one of the most prolific home run hitters of all-time. Eastshore plays its games at Kraft Stadium, a modern state-of-the-art stadium built by Kraft Foods in 1996. Since the 1920s Kraft has sponsored teams in company leagues.

2018 IPA Pro Cup Playoffs

Ruthlandian Union Elite 8 Series

Pro Cup Champs Fall, Snappers Dethrone Elegants
After two glorious seasons where they were the supreme team in the Islands, the Eastshore Elegants finally met their match in the IPA playoffs... the Rocky Rapids Snappers roared past them 8-4 in game 6 of the RU Elite 8 Series and eliminated the Elegants from the postseason... the Snappers took the series four games to two... Don Chaney got the historic win that sends Rocky Rapids to the RU Final 4 for the first time in its history... Chaney (2-0 3.24) had to throw a lot of pitches and was tagged for 12 hits, but the 29-year-old 6'6" right-hander stood the test and held Eastshore to only 4 runs in 8 and two-thirds innings... closer Milt Baker got the last out for Chaney after the Elegants cut the lead to 4 in the ninth... it was Baker's third save in the series... it was a great day for the Snappers offense... They socked 11 hits and piled up an 8-1 lead after 5 frames and gave Chaney a lot of breathing room... SS Ted David (.222) had a two-run homer and 3 RBIs for the winners... 3B Paul Shelton (.346) and RF Larry Hollis (.333) added 2 hits and 2 more RBIs each... CF Roger Murdoch (.217) led Eastshore with 4 hits and 3 runs, including a home run... RF Larry Lowe (.250) cracked 2 hits and drove in 3 runs for the losers... losing pitcher Melvin Key (0-2 6.40) was treated harshly to the tune of 8 runs and 11 hits in only 4+ frames... Now Rocky Rapids will take on the winner of the Ancona-Claxton series in the RU Final 4.

Ancona Forces 7th Game With Claxton
The Ancona Red Elephants outlasted Claxton 7-6 in game 6 at Jay Loman Field to force a seventh game in the RU Elite 8 Series... the Red Elephants ran up a 7-0 lead after 5 innings, then had to hold on for dear life as the Diamonds mounted a determined comeback... a pair of two-run homers by RF Louie DiMucci (.417) and SS Benny Morgan (.333) powered Ancona to an early lead... but Claxton came back strong in the last three innings, but fell a run short... 15-game winner Dave Blair (2-0 3.94) held the Diamonds to 4 hits in his 8 innings, but his 8 walks kept him in constant trouble... Blair allowed four runs before being relieved by John Sharpe, who almost blew the game as he was touched for two runs in the ninth before he finally got the save... Ernie van Riebeeck (0-2 5.68) was the losing pitcher... the Red Elephants ripped him for 7 runs and 10 hits in just 5 innings... SS Donnie Pilsner (.160) slammed a 3-run homer for Claxton... for the first time in the series Claxton LF George McKay (.409) failed to hit a home run... McKay had gone deep in five consecutive games.

Tycobbian Union

Bucs Do It Again, Knock Nats Out Of Playoffs
For the second season in a row, the Bay St. Clair Buccaneers have disposed of the favored Ozarka Naturals in the TU Elite 8 Series four games to two... it was hard for the Bucs to put the Nats away in game 6 at Ellie Ewing Stadium in Ozarka... Bay St. Clair ran up a 5-1 lead after 5 innings and seemed to be well on its way to victory, but the Naturals would have none of that... they rallied to tie it up at 5-5 with 2 in the seventh and 2 in the ninth... the Buccaneers then blew them away with 3 runs in the tenth for a hard-earned 8-5 victory... three straight pinch-hit singles plated the runs... Thomas Knowles, Gil Pierson and Christian Bradley were the game heroes... Knowles put the Bucs ahead with an RBI single and Bradley's hit brought in the last two scores... 1B Gerry Fields (.333) sparked Bay St. Clair with a 2-run blast and 2 runs scored, while Ozarka's 3B Andre Dumas (.391) clubbed two homers and batted in 3 runs and C Frank Kiffin (.364) had 3 hits and 2 RBIs, including a roundtripper... winner Hal Meissner (1-0 4.76) worked 9 innings, permitted 5 runs and 8 hits with 5 Ks and 5 walks... Steve Richt picked up his second series save with a scoreless tenth frame... vet Eddie Roberts (0-1) was the loser... in the tenth, he was pounded for 3 runs and 4 hits in one-third of an inning.

Turon Evens Series With Luxora
Playing at home at Typhoon Stadium, Turon blistered Luxora for 11 hits in a 7-3 victory to even the best-of-seven TU Elite 8 Series at three games apiece... game 7 will also be on Turon's home field... Ted Farentino (2-0 2.12) was masterful again as he zeroed the Zorros without a run and 5 hits through the first 8 innings... they finally broke through with 3 runs on 4 hits in the ninth, but it was too late by then... the Typhoons were led at the plate by CF Mac McCurnan (.174) with a triple and homer and 3 RBIs and 2B Matt Madison (.273) with 3 hits, 2 runs and an RBI... RF Dominick DiCaprio (.348) also belted a home run for Turon... SS Joaquin Malagon (.350) paced the Z's with 2 hits and 2 RBIs... RF Jon Stafford (.375) also collected 3 hits... starter Orlando Mercado (0-2 4.91) exited after 4 innings... Turon tapped him for 4 runs and 4 hits... Mercado was the losing hurler.

ROCKY RAPIDS SNAPPERS

Owner: Express Freight and Shipping Company
GM/Manager: Ryan Noland

Rocky Rapids, population near 63,000, is a river town in northwestern Ruthlandia on the banks of the vital Green River, which begins in the Appian Mountains near Far Mountain and ends in Belair Beach, almost splitting the country in half north to south. The Green River intersects with its western tributary, the Silver River, at Forest City, the Ruthlandian capital and main commercial city.

Rocky Rapids is a lumber and grain processing center and is an important transportation community. Vast quantities of timber from Far Mountain in the north are shipped through the town. It is not a fancy town, just a blue collar, middle class town.

Rocky Rapids is also the home of the Snappers of the IPA’s RU West Division. The Snappers play at Snapper Stadium, overlooking the Green River in the downtown area, which can be seen in the background beyond the ballpark fences. The team is named the Snappers because of the financial importance of the river to the community’s economy. The Snapper was chosen because it is a tough, tenacious river inhabitant, just like the citizens of Rocky Rapids.

The fans really rock at Snapper games with team mascot, Rocky the Snapping Turtle, leading the charge. Music is played throughout the game by the rock band, Rocky Rapids Revival. They constantly rock the stadium with the classic “Rollin’ on the River” every time the Snappers mount a rally. And the seventh inning stretch is really something to hear. RRR jams out on a rock-n-roll version of the baseball classic “Take me out to the ballgame”.

Stadium concessions include crisp and tasty fried catfish taken from the river’s pure and clear waters. But absolutely no turtle soup can be found in the town, despite the request by many opposing teams fans.

The team is owned by Express Freight and Delivery Company, which has extensive railroad and river barge interests and is managed and directed by Ryan Noland, the all-time strikeout leader in company league baseball history. His father is the president of the company board of directors.

OZARKA NATURALS

Owner: J. R. Ewing
GM/Manager: Joe Mac Carney

Ozarka, a Silver Mountains resort town of 73,000, is located in south central Tycobbia and near the Caledonia River, which flows southward through Hillsboro, then westward and comes to an end at Turon on the southwest coast. Nestled among scenic forests and outdoor hot springs, Ozarka is host to tourists who come for snow skiing during the winter and boating, swimming, fishing, camping, hiking and hunting the rest of the year. Big time developers have made this a mecca for the rich and famous with luxury hotels and nightclubs that attend to every possible need: hot spring spas and bathhouses, superstar entertainers, magnificent golf courses, gourmet food, art galleries and gift shops. Ozarka is a retirement center, too.

It is also home to the Ozarka Naturals. J. R. Ewing’s father, Jock Ewing, got tired of the incessant sibling quarrels over the operation of the family-owned Waleska Westerners in the Ruthlandian Amateur Association, so he bought the battling brothers and club vice-presidents, J. R. and Bobby, their own teams in the IPA. Bobby owns the South Fork Stallions and J. R. has Ozarka, where he is a prime real estate developer. Bobby named his brand new stadium after his dad. Not to be outdone, J. R. named his brand new stadium after his mom, Miss Ellie. So the sibling rivalry continues on and off the field. Ellie Ewing Stadium is one of the few parks in baseball that still has a live organ player at each game, which adds a nice nostalgic touch, especially during the seventh inning stretch. Marston, Kenwood and Hillsboro are the other teams that feature a live organist. And at the concessions stands is a succulent gourmet buffet fit for the rich and famous. You will also find all of the traditional baseball fare at a Naturals game.
J. R. Ewing spares no expense when it comes to impressing people and paying his ballplayers. He likes to get his way. He even got the all-time winningest manager in company league history to come out of retirement and take over his team. Joe Mac Carney is now the GM and Manager of the Naturals. And he is very well paid, too.

2018 IPA Pro Cup Elite 8 Series

Ruthlandian Union

Dukas Pitches Ancona Into RU Final 4
This was game seven of the RU Elite 8 Series - the biggest game of Clete Dukas' 3-year IPA career - and he came through with flying colors for the Ancona Red Elephants with a sparkling 3-1 triumph over the Claxton Diamonds at Jay Loman Park in Ancona... the Red Elephants had to win the last two games of the series to advance to the RU Final 4 against the powerful Rocky Rapids Snappers, the conquerors of the two-time Pro Cup titlist Eastshore Elegants... Dukas (2-1 2.42) worked the entire game and only gave up one run on 8 hits, fanned 6 and walked 3... loser Kaz Hayagawa (1-2 4.76) pitched well in defeat... he also went the route, allowed 6 hits and 3 runs... 1B Johnny Lee Harder and 3B Alex Brazzi provided all the runs Ancona needed... Harder (.348) and Brazzi (.217) hit solo homers in the second to give the Red Elephants the lead... Claxton narrowed it to 2-1 on a third-inning triple by 1B Mike Luzzatti (.174) and Ancona finished the scoring with an insurance run in the sixth when RF Louie DiMucci (.407) got an RBI on a fielder's-choice groundout... DiMucci drove in 8 runs in the series.

Tycobbian Union

Turon Trims Luxora 5-3 In Game 7
Nicky Engstrom lost games one and four to Tiago Torres, but he came through for Turon in the game-seven finale with a 5-3 decision over the Zorro ace... the crucial victory puts the Typhoons in the Tycobbian Final 4 against the Bay St. Clair Buccaneers... Engstrom (1-2 3.22) worked into the eighth to pick up the win... he allowed 3 runs on 7 hits and fanned 4... closer Merle Studebaker relieved him and retired all 5 batters he faced to get his second series save... Torres (2-1 3.18) worked into the seventh, but permitted 9 hits and 5 runs in a lackluster performance... Turon took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame... the Z's went up 2-1 in the second... the Typhoons regained it 3-2 in the fourth... Luxora tied it at 3-3 in the sixth... then SS Mickey O'Malley (.174) drilled a 2-run single in the bottom of the seventh to put Turon ahead to stay 5-3... the Typhoons collected 10 hits and were paced by 1B Clyde Kingsford (.231) with 3-4 and an RBI and RF Dominick DiCaprio (.370) with 2-4 and a run... LF Dickie Nordhagen (.333) sparked the Zorros with 2-4 and 2 RBIs and C Jim Thorpe Chandler (.414) went 2-4 and scored twice... Luxora got 7 hits... the Final 4 begins Wednesday in Turon at Typhoon Stadium.

Around The Town In The IPA

Bay St. Clair Buccaneers

Owner: Louis "Sugar Lips" Charles
GM/Manager: Guy Rondre (pronounced "Gee Ron-dray")

Bay St. Clair is a major port, tourist destination and petroleum and railroad center, located in southwestern Tycobbia on its namesake, Bay St. Clair, a great natural harbor. It is a town of 117,000 resting on the Appian River, which empties into the Kelnyck Ocean. The town was established in the 1850s by a group of American abolitionists from the North and the South, who saw the coming Civil War. They wanted to set up a country free from slavery and religious intolerance.

Offshore oil rigs in the Southern Sea provide a great boost to the local economy and a thriving petroleum business. Noxxe Oil Corporation is one of the nation's biggest and its home office is in Bay St. Clair.

Breathtakingly beautiful white beaches and luxurious hotels dot the coastline. Bay St. Clair has a multicultural heritage with French and Creole backgrounds. It is known for great music, exquisite cuisine and good times. Bon Temps ("Good Times" in French) is a lenten carnival, famous for parades, costumed balls and frivolity. Jazz funerals are a noted part of the town's culture.

Another important annual event and tourist lure is the Bay St. Clair Jazz and Music Heritage Foundation's "Razzmatazz". This is ten days of jazz, blues, gospel and rock greats.

Bay St. Clair is also home of the Buccaneers baseball team of the Islandian Pro Alliance. The Bucs are in the Tycobbian Union's West Division. They are owned by jazz immortal, Louis "Sugar Lips" Charles. This Creole singer and trumpeteer loves his baseball just about as much as his music. He was one of the league creators along with Jock Ewing, Rob Jackson and John Banson.

The club plays at Shoreline Stadium, which looks out on the beautiful white beaches and blue-watered bay. A brass band, often led by "Sugar Lips", entertains the fans at all Buccaneers' games. At the seventh-inning stretch, the band plays "When the Bucs Go Marching In". And when the opposing teams have to go to the bullpen for a relief pitcher, the band welcomes him with a funeral dirge, a sad and mournful song. When the game is decided in favor of the Bucs, they begin playing a lively Dixieland victory tune and parade around the stadium.

Concessions are great with wonderful Creole soul food, gumbo (seafood/okra soup), red beans and rice, jambalaya (seafood casserole), hot beignets (pronounced "ben-yays"), hot out-of-the-grease doughnuts, covered in powdered sugar, cafe au lait (chicory coffee with hot milk), pecan pralines (candy), snowballs, topped with sweet condensed milk, and the traditional hamburgers and hot dogs.

Bay St. Clair's GM and Manager is hometown boy, Guy Rondre, a fine southpaw in his industrial league days. He was known for a great fastball and was nickname "Lightning".

Snappers And Turon Favored In IPA Final 4s
The "haves" and the "have-nots" are meeting in the IPA Final 4s. Powerhouses Rocky Rapids and Turon have the pitching and underdogs Ancona and Bay St. Clair come up short on the hill. That how the baseball analysts are forecasting this round of the playoffs. In the Ruthlandian Union the Rocky Rapids Snappers, fresh off a big series win over the reigning Pro Cup champ Eastshore, will host the Ancona Red Elephants in the first two games beginning Wednesday at Snapper Stadium. Over in Tycobbia it will be Turon welcoming Bay St. Clair to Typhoon Stadium on Wednesday in game one. The Buccaneers are fresh off an upset of Ozarka. The Final 4 Series are a best-of-seven with Rocky Rapids and Turon having the home-field advantage.

The Snappers have three fine starters in Junior Noland (23-10), Don Chaney (18-15) and Joe Anderson (21-13), while the Red Elephants have only one strong starter in Clete Dukas (20-12). The Snappers also get the nod in the bullpen with Milt Baker (35 saves). Ancona may have a slight edge at the plate with LF Kenny Willard (.331 BA/28 HR), RF Louie DiMucci (.298 BA/30 HR)and 1B Johnny Lee Harder (.288 BA/18 HR). Rocky Rapids best bats belong to 3B Paul Shelton (.277 BA/37 HR), C Hank Bethel (.323 BA/15 HR), LF Rob Barton (.322 BA/13 HR) and CF Carl Johnson (.291 BA/24 HR). The Red Elephants have a decided advantage defensively with a .973 fielding percentage to the Snappers poor .968 FA.

Turon has three outstanding starters. Shane Farmer (29-3), Nicky Engstrom (18-11) and Ted Farentino (18-13) form one of the best rotations in the IPA. Bay St. Clair has only one standout starter in Benny Coates (17-13). The Typhoons Merle Studebaker (34 saves) and the Buccaneers Steve Richt (30 saves) are both capable closers. At the plate Turon has a wealth of offense and firepower with 1B Clyde Kingsford (.338 BA/44 HR), CF Mac McCurnan (.304 BA/32 HR), RF Dominick DiCaprio (.297 BA/29 HR) and OF Andy Porter (.308 BA/20 HR). The Bucs are pale in comparision with SS Jimmy Sawyer (.274 BA/25 HR), CF Bill Howell (.314 BA/2 HR) and 2B Bud Walker (.298 BA/6 HR) the top hitters. If defense makes a difference, Bay St. Clair is far superior to the Typhoons, totally outclassing them .977 to .969 in fielding percentage.

Rocky Rapids will have the easier time in the RU Final 4. They should take the Red Elephants in six games. Turon will have quite a task on its hands with Bay St. Clair. If the Bucs can get good outings from Dean Dailey (7-1) and Hal Meissner (20-10), they can make it a very competitive series. The Typhoons will have to be at their best to whip Bay St. Clair, who knocked off one of the best teams in the IPA in the first round, the Ozarka Naturals. The postseason seems to bring out the best in Bucs. It was the second straight year they upended favored Ozarka. The forecast is for a seven-game series with Turon advancing to the IPA Pro Cup Finals.

Snappers Noland Stops Ancona 4-1
Junior Noland was almost flawless in the opening game of the Ruthlandian Final 4 Series... the Rocky Rapids right-hander stopped the Ancona Red Elephants cold except for LF Kenny Willard's ninth-inning home run... that was the only run Noland allowed in the 4-1 victory at Snapper Stadium... Noland (2-1 1.73) struck out 5, walked none and surrendered 7 hits... 1B Joel Williams gave him all the runs he needed with a 2-run smash in the second inning... Williams (.435) had 2 hits as did LF Rob Barton (.286), who scored twice and tripled in a run... Nikon Maragos (0-1 5.64) went 7 innings in defeat, allowing 6 hits and all 4 runs.

Tycobbian Union Final 4 Series

Turon Trio Too Tough, Blank Bucs In Opener
Three Turon pitchers combined to blank Bay St. Clair 3-0 on 9 hits in the first game of the Tycobbian Final 4 Series played at Typhoon Stadium... 29-game winner Shane Farmer (2-1 4.91) worked the first 7 frames and gave up 8 hits... Merle Studebaker pitched a scoreless eighth and Juan-Carlos Torriente closed it out in the ninth... Benny Coates (2-1 2.10) went all the way for the Buccaneers and tossed a credible game, permitting 8 hits with 3 Ks and no walks... CF Mac McCurnan (.188) clouted his 3rd playoff homer in the third for the first run of the game... 1B Clyde Kingsford (.233) added another solo blast in the sixth, his 2nd of the postseason... SS Jimmy Herr (.360) doubled in the final Typhoon run in the sixth.

Ancona Ace Dukas Evens Series With Snappers
Ancona ace Clete Dukas worked his magic and got the Red Elephants a split after two games of the RU Final 4 Series... Dukas (3-1 2.06), a 20-game winner in the regular season, scattered 8 hits in beating Rocky Rapids 5-2, striking out 4 and walking 3... Ancona got 10 hits and were paced by CF Ken Rutledge (.333), LF Ken Willard (.282) and C Ricky Utterbach (.286) with 2 hits each... LF Rob Barton (.360) went 3-for-4 for the Snappers... the Red Elephants got to Chaney for a run in the first and 3 more in the fourth... Dukas shut out Rocky Rapids until the sixth... the Snappers got the final score in the ninth.

Tycobbian Union Final 4 Series

Typhoons Sink Bucs 8-2 In Game 2
Turon is doing everything right and has taken the first two games of the Tycobbian Union Final 4 Series with Bay St. Clair... the Typhoons pounded out 13 hits at the plate and got a fine performance on the mound from Nicky Engstrom, who checked the Bucs on 5 hits, whiffed 8 and walked none... 2B Matt Madison (.314) led the offensive fireworks with 4 hits, 2 RBIs and 2 runs... 1B Clyde Kingsford also chipped with 2 runs batted in... LF Bruno DiPirro had 2 hits and 2 RBIs for Bay St. Clair... losing pitcher Hal Meissner (1-1 7.23) was gone before he even got warmed up... Turon attacked him for 6 runs in the second inning.

TURON TYPHOONS

Owner: Anastas International Shipping
GM/Manager: Ashton “Whitey” Richburn

Turon is a seaport town of 118,000 in the Caledonia River basin on the southwestern coast of Tycobbia and its second largest population-wise. The Caledonia River terminates here after winding 500 miles from east to west from Red Bluff in the central Silver Mountains southward through Hillsboro and then flowing westward near the towns of South Fork, Denton City and Arlon. The river finally comes to an end in Turon and empties into the Kelnyck Ocean and Southern Sea.

It is a cosmopolitan town with a diversified economy and a mecca for tourists. Turon is a busy trade and distribution center with many shipping interests. Agriculture flourishes here with extensive farmlands in the Caledonia River basin. It is also a diversity of cultures and was settled in the 1840s and 1850s by French, Scottish, Irish and German settlers, who came to get away from religious intolerance and persecution. Southerners from the United States came in good numbers after the Civil War defeat. Turon became their New South, but minus the slave culture.

Turon is resplendent with beauty. Streets and boulevards lined with grand live oak trees and antebellum mansions. In the countryside are majestic plantations. Near the coast you'll find sugar-white sandy beaches. You'll find plenty of Old World in Turon, but also plenty of the Modern World, too.

The Turon Typhoons of the IPA's South Division play in a very modern baseball palace, Typhoon Stadium. It is built with concrete and steel to withstand the occasional typhoon that emanates from the cold and icy waters of the Kelnyck Ocean. The old ballpark was completely destroyed twice in 1938 and 1967. The new stadium was completed in 1999 and houses the Tyrobbian Baseball Hall of Fame, a must-see for all Islandian baseball fans. It covers the entire spectrum and includes memorabilia from the amateur, college and industrial leagues.

The Typhoons really are active promoters with something going on each inning during the ballgames. All kinds of promotions, games and stunts to enliven and entertain the fans. Wild music tracks fill the stadium to rally the Typhoons and their fans. Concessions are stocked with all of the traditional ballpark delights.

Turon is owned by wealthy shipping tycoon, Onnie Anastas. His GM and Manager is Ashton “Whitey” Richburn, one of the finest defensive center fielders and lead-off men in Tycobbian baseball history.

2018 IPA Pro Cup Playoffs

Ruthlandian Union Final 4 Series

Kotas HR Puts Ancona Ahead In Series
When you get your chance, make the best of it... that's exactly what 21-year-old Alekos Kotas (.333) did in game 3 of the RU Final 4 Series at Jay Loman Park in Ancona... the back-up first sacker for the Ancona Red Elephants bashed a 3-run homer in the last of the eighth to stun favored Rocky Rapids 5-3 and give Ancona a surprising two-to-one edge in the best-of-seven series... that clutch clout made a winner out of Dave Blair and a loser out of Joe Anderson... 3B Benny Morgan (.231) drove in Ancona's other two runs... Blair (3-0 3.75) hurled a shaky game, walking 5 in 8 innings, but he limited the Snappers to just 3 base hits, all good for extra bases... John Sharpe was summoned in the ninth and got the save, his second of the playoffs... Rocky Rapids was held to 4 hits... Joe Anderson (1-2 2.14) was done in by his faulty defense... the last three Red Elephant runs were not earned... Anderson allowed 6 hits, fanned 4 and issued no walks... LF Scott Camden (.286) hit a lead-off homer and C Hank Bethel's (.294) 2-run double in the third gave the Snappers an early 3-1 lead... Anderson nursed a 3-2 lead until the ill-fated eighth.

Tycobbian Union Final 4 Series

Howell's Triple Gives Bucs 5-4 Victory In 12 Innings
At home at Shoreline Park, Bay St. Clair rallied twice and finally beat Turon 5-4 in 12 innings for its first win in the TU Final 4... the Typhoons carried a 3-0 lead into the last of the eighth and were on the verge of its third straight win, but the Bucs came back on an RBI single by Bill Howell (.424) and a 2-run single by SS Jimmy Sawyer (.091) to send the game into extra innings... Turon CF Mac McCurnan (.211) put them ahead by a run in the top of the 12th with an RBI single... but Howell blasted a 2-run walk-off triple off losing pitcher Juan-Carlos Torriente (0-1) to give the game to Bay St. Clair... 1B Clyde Kingsford (.205) and RF Andy Porter (.619) both hit homers for the Typhoons... Kingsford's was a 2-run shot and Porter's was a solo blast... Each has 3 in the postseason... Buccaneer closer Steve Richt (1-0 2.08) garnered the win, courtesy of Howell's homer ... Richt worked 3 innings and allowed 1 run and 3 hits... Bay St. Clair outhit the Typhoons 12 to 7... Howell led the way with 4 hits... both clubs got good outings from its starters... Ted Farentino went 8 for the Typhoons and permitted 3 runs on 9 hits, while the Bucs Dean Dailey held Turon to 4 hits and 3 runs in his 9 innings.

2018 IPA Pro Cup Playoffs

Ruthlandian Union Final 4 Series

Marshall Marvelous, Ancona Up 3-1 In Series
In an unbelievable turn of events, the Ancona Red Elephants have shocked the baseball world by beating the heavily-favored Rocky Rapids Snappers for the third time in four games... Killer Brewster's boys got a brilliantly-pitched game from 23-year-old rookie Lynwood Marshall as he outdueled Junior Noland 1-0 in game 4 of the Ruthlandian Final 4 Series... one more win will give the unheralded Red Elephants a spot in the Pro Cup Finals... desperate for a starter, Brewster reached into his bullpen for Marshall and it paid off handsomely... Marshall (1-1 0.71) blanked the Snappers for 8 innings on 5 hits, then turned it over to closer John Sharpe, who retired them in order and struck out two of the batters... in 39 relief appearances Marshall was 9-7 with a 2.95 ERA in the regular season... Ancona got the game's only score in the first when 2B Phil Alston (.200) doubled to lead off the game, went to third on an infield single by LF Kenny Willard (277), then scored on a wild pitch... Junior Noland (2-2 1.59) was strong, too... he only gave up 5 hits, fanned 4 and walked 4 in a tough loss... Now Ancona has its ace Clete Dukas ready to try to wrap up the series in a colossal upset... the Snappers will counter with Don Chaney... Dukas is 3-1 with a standout 2.06 ERA in the postseason, while Chaney is 2-1 with a 2.92 ERA... game 5 will be played tomorrow afternoon at Jay Loman Park in Ancona.

Tycobbian Union Final 4 Series

Bucs Coates Even Series, Turon Falls 4-1
Down 2-0 to Turon in the Tycobbian Final 4, the Bay St. Clair Buccaneers have rebounded with two consecutive victories to even it at two games each... Benny Coates did not have his best day, but he overcame 7 walks to whip the Typhoons 4-1 in game four at Shoreline Park in Bay St. Clair... Coates (3-1 1.87) limited Turon to just 3 hits in 8 innings and stranded 11 base-runners... closer Steve Richt saved it for Coates with a runless ninth... it was his 3rd postseason save... CF Bill Howell (405) and SS Jimmy Sawyer (.108) each drove in a pair of runs for the Bucs... with the score tied at 1-1, a 3-run eighth decided the game... Howell drove in the winning run with a single and Sawyer added to it with a 2-run base hit... 29-game winner Shane Farmer (2-2 4.80) continued to struggle in the playoffs... in an uneven performance, he was tagged for 4 runs and 7 hits, walked 5 and struck out 6.

Underdog Ancona had its chance, but couldn't finish off the rebounding Rocky Rapids Snappers in game six of the RU Final 4... Rocky Rapids rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the bottom of the eighth, triggered by a pair of crucial errors that opened the door for 4 unearned runs... LF Scott Camden (.316) and CF Carl Johnson (.200) had 2-run singles in the rally... it was another defensive nighmare as the Red Elephants committed 4 errors to doom Doug Blair to defeat... Blair (3-1 3.08) lost his first playoff game this season... he permitted 6 hits and only one earned run... Joe Anderson (2-2 2.17) fired a strong game for the Snappers, holding Ancona to 2 runs and 4 hits with 8 Ks and 3 walks...
