True Yield Of Obscure Guys
Topps Vault tends to post these guys alphabetically - this latest run has an unusually large number of really short-termers.
We begin with Bob Ferris, who pitched seven times for the 1979-80 Angels |

Continuing
This is Ed Ricks - one of those Zombie guys - recalled by the Yankees in 1977 for a week, sent back without getting into a game, then off to the White Sox and not play there, either. Makes Moonlight Graham look Pension-eligible Last edited by Merkle923; 10-11-2014 at 01:01 PM. |

Technically he doesn't belong here but let's give him at least THIS!

And this...
...is the elusive Mark Williams, who spent about a week in the outfield of the 1977 A's

Gene Ratliff
One of the countless '60s guys who were forced onto major league rosters long before they were ready because of the "First-Year Player Rule."
Two stints with the '65 Astros. Four at bats. Four strikeouts. |

Wayne Redmond
Cameos with the Tigers in '65 and '69 and about six years as one of their "top prospects." One walk, one run, no hits.

Topps Vault also...
...has guys photographed so young they are barely recognizable. This'd be a skinny Rick Reuschel circa 1971

And Rick's Brother...
Paul Reuschel, the reliever..
Only the sideburns suggest this isn't a high school picture |

And Fred Rath
Not only an eight-game pitcher with the White Sox but the father of a two-game pitcher from the Rockies of the same name.

Unknown Oriole
It could be Paul Hartzell from 1980. The Varsity numbers with white paneled cap would be from 1975-1981. He was also a rightie. He's the only one with 28 that was a pitcher in that time period. The others were Tom Shopay and Jim Dwyer and they didn't pitch. Here's a little photo of earlier days.

Since we're on the subject...
About the Topps Vault:
The only way I know to obtain images from this chest of wonders is via their e-Bay store, and all images there are identified. Is there another method by which they release images, where identities are not made known (I ask because of the frequent requests here to ID some players in Vault images)? Also, I check the Vault frequently, but a number of images I've seen here I don't recall having seen there. So, is there some other way they release images? Also - maybe this isn't the right place, but could someone please explain all the possible proof variations available for typical cards of the 70s-80s? Has Topps ever published a list of the, I don't know, 10 different possible variations of a 1978 card? Just when I think I have a handle on it, I see something called a slick proof...what the heck is that? Thanks! |

"Paul Hartzell"
Actually the Oriole RHP IS Andy Replogle from the spring of '78. As I mentioned above the images tend to be posted in rough alphabetical order and this is amid the Redmonds and Renicks.
