Name this Tigers Pitcher
Greetings all, I wanted to post these pictures in the hopes that you can confirm my assumptions. Courtesy of Topps Vault and the order of the players that preceded and followed him, (and yes I'm aware that it does not always apply), I'm hoping this is one Vern Ruhle.
Without seeing a number and after comparing to a few later Topps pics it seems likely but I am not sure. I need some certainty from this forum of experts! ![]() Thanks in advance! |

Sam Gibson
I just discovered that the photo I have of Sam Gibson as a Yankee isn't him. Anyone have one? And anyone know who this might be?

And fielding
Manuel "Chico" Ruiz. Based on other similarly shaded images this is more likely 1980 than 1978

And More Don Rose
He also pitched one - count 'em - one inning for the 1974 Giants.

And To Answer That Question
How did Topps decide which images to use? Sometimes it was pretty easy. Nice job by the equipment manager for perennial White Sox '60s pitching prospect Andy (Rube) Rubilotta. This one was taken in 1967.

Sam Gibson
Perhaps someone can come up with a better quality shot, but the attached is Sam Gibson with the Yankees.

A Rarely Seen Yankee
These are from my own work years ago: Gene Locklear - Yankees outfielder in brief spurts, 1976 and 1977.

And A Familiar Name In An Unfamiliar Number
Reggie Jackson wore uniform 20 in spring training with the Yankees in 1977. When they traded away an outfielder named Terry Whitfield just before opening day, Jackson says he thought 'that'd be a nice tribute to Aaron and McCovey and it feels more like me.'
How often do you see shots of him in that #20? Last edited by Merkle923; 07-28-2017 at 05:44 PM. |

A Better Don Grate (and a bonus)
Seems like no one has been able to come up with a solid head shot or portrait of Don Grate, who while in Chattanooga twice set the long-distance baseball throwing record. From my trove of salvaged negatives, here is a Lookouts picture day from 1953 that shows Grate alongsiude another minor league legend, Ralph (Country) Brown.
P.S. I've learned how to downsize my images! |

Harmon Killebrew from 1957
Two of the more notable saves from my salvage job of some 20 years ago. These were Chattanooga Lookouts picture day 1957 of a big dude named Harmon Killebrew. I am fortunate enough to actually own the orginal negatives, but these are worth sharing with the great people here.

More Vern Ruhle
More Vern Ruhle (see photos of him as an active player with the Detroit Tigers on the previous page (Pg. 1126). Photo here is from Ruhle's days as a Philadelphia Phillies pitching coach in 2001 & 2002.

A Pair of outstanding RHP learn of Cooperstown election
January 22, 1976: Bob Lemon (left) and Robin Roberts, putting a bear hug on "Lem", get the news that they have just been elected by the Baseball Writers of America Association (BBWAA) to the National Baseball Hall Of Fame's induction class of 1976. Roberts was elected to Cooperstown enshrinement in his 3rd year of eligibility. For Lemon, 13 proved to be his lucky number as he was finally elected after 12 unsuccessful tries.
