Cards news: Oct. 1 -- Oblique strain will send IF Nico Hoerner to IL; Olivas recalled from Memphis
The St. Louis Cardinals have placed infielder Nico Hoerner on the 10-day injured list after he suffered an oblique strain during a 4-3 win over Atlanta on Oct. 1.
Hoerner, 32, is expected to miss two weeks, which will rule him out for the remainder of the regular season along with the wild-card round of the National League playoffs should the team advance that far. In 103 games/98 starts this season, Hoerner has hit .227 with five home runs and 29 RBIs. Getting called up from AAA Memphis will be 25-year-old infielder Eddy Olivas. In 101 games this season between AAA and AA Springfield, Olivas has hit .263 with five home runs and 38 RBIs. Olivas also made his major league debut with the Cardinals during the 2029 season. Making a start during an August 14 game against the New York Mets, Olivas went 0-for-3 in a 1-0 loss. |

With a 7-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies, the Baltimore Orioles clinched the championship of the American League East Division.
At 89-68, the Orioles sit 5.5 games ahead of the second-place Boston Red Sox with five games left in the season. The Los Angeles Angels own a two-game edge over Baltimore in the race for the best record in the AL. The postseason berth is Baltimore's first since 2027. It last won the division in 2014. Baltimore has not reached the World Series snice 1983, when it defeated the Philadelphia Phillies. |

The Kansas City Royals earned at least a wild-card berth in the upcoming postseason with a 9-5 win over the Texas Rangers.
The title in the American League Central Division has yet to be decided as the Royals lead second-place Minnesota by two games with three contests left in the regular season. This will be the second consecutive playoff appearance for K.C. It last won the AL Central in 2023. The Royals made the World Series in 2014 and 15, defeating the New York Mets in 2016. |

Despite an 11-1 loss to the Miami Marlins, the New York Mets will enter the 2029 playoffs as champions of the National League East Division.
The Mets (91-67) own a 4.5-game lead in the division over the Philadelphia Phillies with four games left in the regular season. New York appears headed toward a spot in the wild-card round as it trails the NL-Central leading Cincinnati Reds by three games and the NL West champion San Francisco Giants by two in the race for a the first-round byes in the NL playoffs. The Mets last playoff appearance came in 2024, when they were also NL East champs. They last made the World Series in 2015, losing to the Kansas City Royals. New York's last World Series title came in 1986, when it defeated the Boston Red Sox in seven games. |

The Cardinals (86-77) sit in second place in the NL Central Division, eight games behind the Cincinnati Reds with four games remaining in the regular season. St. Louis still has a chance at the top wild-card spot, as it trails the Philadelphia Phillies by a half-game. It likely will not drop to the third position, owning a four-game lead over Milwaukee. The Cardinals are back in the playoffs after a two-season hiatus. They last made the World Series in 2025, when they defeated the Los Angeles Angels. |

The two-time defending World Series champion Minnesota Twins will get a chance to defend their championships, but they'll have to do it as a wild card after clinching a postseason berth with a 9-4 win over the Cleveland Indians.
At 88-72, the Twins have already been eliminated from the American League Central Division race by the Kansas City Royals who sit three games in front of them with two games remaining. The Twins could be the No. 1 seed among the wild cards as they lead Toronto by two games. The playoff berth is the sixth straight for Minnesota. They last qualified as a wild card in 2027. |
