2049 Final Standings and Regular Season Stats
![]() ![]() You know you had a good season when you scored the most runs and allowed the fewest. Everything's great here except for the defense, which was actually pretty decent in the first half of the season before falling off badly in the second. It's the exhaust port on our Death Star. ![]() Jon Morales, hoo boy. Davila and Barela had MVP-caliber seasons as well and we ended up with 6.5 WAR from the catcher position as the bench was extremely productive (Alejandre, I.Morales, Kidd, R.Ramirez). That's how you score 1000 runs and win 117. ![]() The big 3 of Bookhart-Rose-Riley were great this year with the defense actually playing decent behind them while Melvin Delgado had to deal with injuries and bad D. They'll be our 4-man playoff rotation. The bullpen wasn't spectacular but it was adequate. Tony Pasillas though was both bad (-0.7 WAR) and unlucky (.409 BABIP), which is how one ends up with a 6.70 ERA. |

October 9, 2049: ALDS Game 1 & NLDS Game 2
A good start...
![]() In a lineup of feared sluggers and superstars Chris Parham was the surprise offensive hero tonight as his sac fly gave the Rays the lead to stay in the 2nd and his 2-run homer in the 4th proved the difference as the Rays took a tough 4-2 win over the Angels to open their ALDS. Luis Barela also homered, his 15th career postseason dinger, and Greg Bookhart won his 21st game of the year despite walking 4. The bullpen was outstanding with three relievers throwing perfect innings and the fourth Steve Falcon pitching around a couple of hits in the 9th. Dave Rose will try to make it 2-0 Rays tomorrow. October 10, 2049: ALDS Game 2
![]() One win away from the ALCS are the Rays after a more Publix Park-like offensive performance led by massive games from Luis Barela and Juan Davila. Barela's grand slam off the unfortunate Oscar Sampayo, whom for the second day straight gave up a homer to the first batter the faced, was the game's big hit as it broke open a 2-0 game. Dave Rose was dominant as usual on the mound and now we'll look to Bob Riley to give us the sweep in Anaheim. And another White Sox-Rays ALCS is shaping up: ![]() |

October 12, 2049: ALDS Game 3 & NLDS Game 4
Job done...
![]() It wasn't pretty but the Rays took care of business in Anaheim, taking the ALDS at the first opportunity with a 7-5 win. Jon Morales hit his first two MLB postseason homers, the second of which was a gargantuan blast of 465 feet well onto the rocks behind CF, and the Rays held a seemingly-comfortable 4-1 lead. But Willie Navarro loaded the bases without getting anyone out in the 7th and Mel Mejia served up a grand slam to put the Angels in front. Tampa Bay bats had other ideas though and with two out and nobody on in the 8th they strung together 4 straight hits capped by Nelson Bocardo's 2-run double to re-take the lead. But the job wasn't done yet as Abelaldo Gray loaded the bases in the 8th requiring Steve Falcon to come in early and get a strikeout to end the threat and then Falcon himself loaded the bases in the 9th before getting a groundball to end it. Now they'll play the White Sox-Astros winner which appeared to be Chicago before Houston hit them with 6 runs in the bottom of the 9th of their Game 3 to stay alive. Meanwhile the Cubs and Giants have already booked their places in the NLCS: ![]() |

The Astros won't go away, thanks in part to former Ray Doug Johns:

So it's Houston...
![]() Despite falling behind 0-2 in the series the Astros and former Rays star slugger Doug Johns have a date with the Rays in the ALCS. Johns had a grand slam and 5 RBI in the clincher and had his usual 30 HR/100 RBI season with Houston. |

Off on the right foot...
![]() It should have been easy after taking an 8-0 lead through 5 and being up 10-4 after 6 but the bullpen made it a bit of adventure before Steve Falcon put an end to the nonsense with a 5-out save which featured 4 strikeouts. Before that Jon Morales had his second 2-homer game of the playoffs, Yuji Morioka got them started early, and Tomas Laboy showed no rust by homering in his first at-bat of this postseason and going 2-3. Greg Bookhart was excellent until he wasn't, giving up 4 runs in the 6th but still making it 2-0 in the playoffs to go with 20-5 on the regular season. Dave Rose will try to get us halfway there tomorrow. All even in the NL: ![]() |

October 18, 2049: ALCS Game 2
A thriller...
![]() It took 10 innings to push across that second run, but the Rays did it when Juan Davila doubled for his 4th hit of the game with 2 out and Nelson Bocardo brought him home with a single up the middle as the Rays walked off a 2-1 win to go up 2-0 in the ALCS. Davila had earlier homered for sole Rays run and it looked like a might be a frustrating loss after they had numerous opportunities to break the 1-1 tie in regulation but couldn't get the big hit (or got the man thrown out at the plate in the 6th when they did get it, with 16 LOB). But thanks to another gem from Dave Rose and four hitless innings from the pen, they bought enough time to pull it out. Now they head to Houston up 2-0 and will have Bob Riley on the mound for Game 3. |

Sometimes it just doesn't seem fair...
![]() The best team in baseball has played like it in the postseason this year, still yet to lose after hammering Houston 10-0 and going up 3-0 in the ALCS. They made an early statement of intent with a 4-run first after two out and nobody on and had double digits by the 5th. Luis Barela was 4-4 with a homer, Yuji Morioka's 3-run shot made it a rout, and it was a team effort all around. Bob Riley meanwhile pitched from his rocking chair and we got a chance to blood a couple of pitchers who hadn't seen any postseason action. Speaking of pitchers not seeing playoff action, Melvin Delgado will make his first start of the postseason tomorrow to try and end this series quickly. Meanwhile it looks like we might go the distance in the NL: ![]() |

October 21, 2049: ALCS Game 4 & NLCS Game 5
Moving on...
![]() Like Game 1, this one was a rout until it wasn't and the Rays had to hang on at the end to complete the sweep of Houston. This time Jose Morales got into trouble in the 9th but instead of dousing the fire Steve Falcon poured some gasoline on it, giving up an RBI single and a couple of bases-loaded walks before finally getting former Ray Ben Hill to ground out back to him to end things. Before all that late drama it was another day at the office for the Rays offense with Luis Barela and Yuji Morioka (named series MVP) each belting a pair of homers with the two going back-to-back in the 4th. Jon Morales had 4 hits as well as the rookie hasn't been fazed by the big stage, hitting .467 with 4 HR through the first two rounds (only 7 games with the sweeps). So who will we play in the World Series? It's going to take at least a 6th game in the NLCS to find out, but one team got a leg up today: ![]() |

![]() So it will be the Cubs against the Rays in the World Series again as these teams met up twice in three years from 2036-2038 with Tampa Bay prevailing both times. It took a dramatic 3-run 8th-inning rally for Chicago to pull it out with the winner coming on a bases-loaded walk to legendary slugger Nelson Gamez. |
