Analysis

University Point takes over the top spot in the Power Rankings, while The Slog is at the bottom. There are not a lot of early surprises for success, but there are a few teams that seem to be better than their records indicate.

At the bottom of the SCA, Egret (2-8) is one of those teams. The Ninjas have been all-around bad, so it could be early season slumps or just a bad team.

Jamaica Plain (3-7) is another. They are seeing some slumps with the big surprise so far being 1B Cody Flatt (.185/1/7) who hit 35 home runs last season and 33 two seasons ago. Usually successful on the mound, SP Chris Deathclaw is 0-3 despite a 2.45 ERA.

Minor League Report

BMU

Players of the Week

Hacker Takes This Week's Trophy: It can be difficult for a young player to step out of the shadows and assert himself in the Commonwealth Association, but last week Kyle Hacker of the College Square Nerd Ragers reminded everyone just why he's here as he threw up numbers that made him an easy selection for Player of the Week. Hacker rocked opposing pitching for a .583 average (7-for-12), 3 home runs and 5 RBIs to come away with the award.

Bohinski Selected Top Performer in MA: So far in his young career, Goose Bohinski has kept a low profile, but after his performance at the plate last week, he attracted the notice of the rest of the Massachusetts Association in a big way as he was named the Player of the Week today for his efforts.

The 23-year-old Somerville Place Sentry Bots catcher hit at a torrid .615 clip as he collected 8 hits in 13 at-bats, 3 home runs, 7 RBIs and 6 runs scored.

SL's Best Player, Pooch of Neponset Park: Tylor Pooch went on a week-long tirade against the South League pitchers and was acclaimed the Player of the Week.

The Neponset Park shortstop was hot as a firecracker, exploding with a .647 average, no home runs and 0 RBIs. For the week Pooch bashed out 11 hits in 17 at-bats and scored 9 runs.

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

Analysis

The top three teams in the Week 3 Power Rankings look familiar as the first weekend of league games began. The top three--Vault 81, Nordhagen Beach, and Diamond City--were seeds 1 and 2 in their associations last season. The only team missing from the top seeds in 2300 is Fort Hagen (#13), which has struggled so far this season, including dropping two of three at #4 Adamantium.

Last week's #1, University Point, dropped to #5 this week to close out the Top 5. The Deathclaws went 2-3 on the week, including a 1-2 home weekend against Goodneighbor (#10). Despite the week, which included a 1-1 split with FHE (#15), the Claws still lead the Minutemen League by two games over the Hancocks and Atom Cats (#12).

The Dwellers held the top record in the SCA last season, and they currently have the same at 12-3. Vault 81 swept the Hancocks in two games and then won the last two games over Oberland (#14), including a 19-1 annihilation on Saturday.

Diamond City looks like it wants a third-straight championship with its 11-4 record, just one game back of the Dwellers. The Swatters went 4-1, taking two straight over the Cats before taking two games over Egret (#22), including yesterday's 19-8 shootout.

The Boys handled Sunshine Tidings (#9) twice in one-run games before beating Easy Town (#7) two out of three for the 4-1 week and a two-game lead over the Assaultrons in the Brotherhood League.

Abernathy controls the Institute League with an 11-4 record, one game up on Concord (#). In addition to their series win over the Silver Shroud, the Adamantium also split their midweek series with Easy Town in two one-run, low-scoring games.

We have yet to complete the first month of the season, but there have been a few players starting off red hot. On offense in the North Charles Association, Starlight's CF Glenn Higinbotham (.500/2/11) is tearing the cover off the ball. The Lady Killers also have seen star 1B Zeldolph Violet is also contributing, batting .426/.585/.830 with 6 HR and 20 RBI. Concord's LF Dan Erb is having another strong start, batting .426 with 6 HR and 20 RBI. In the South Charles Association, a few familiar names are already atop in the statistical leaders categories. RF Tomas Jones leads with a .400 average along with 4 HR and 16 RBI. Vault 81's CF Aesed Hayjen leads with a 1.6 WAR, batting .370 with 7 HR and 17 RBI and 11 stolen bases.

Pitching-wise, several players have been terrific in their either three or four starts. In the NCA, Salem's Tony Bertha has started three games and finished all of them, going 2-1 with a 1.03 ERA. The Radstags' Chris Radsco is 4-0 in four starts with a 3.86 ERA. The Party Boys' Beachboy Nut (3-0, 1.67) leads in WAR with a 1.4, K's with 28, and FIP with 2.19. Vault 81's Vince McCort (3-0) leads the SCA in ERA (0.88), WAR (1.1), complete games (2), WHIP (0.85), ERA+ (495), and rWAR (2.1). His teammate, Edwin Mass (4-0, 2.68) is also leading several categories. Nordhagen Beach's Tom Mannequin and the Dwellers' Tom Rose each lead their leagues with 8 saves.

He compiled a .571 average (8-for-14) with 2 home runs, 9 RBIs and 5 runs scored.

Red-Hot Qesadena SL Player of the Week: One of the league's most exciting young players, Willie Qesadena of the Coast Guard Pier Demolitionists earned himself South League Player of the Week honors with a standout performance in last week's games.

You know, at a glance, it does indeed look like the Shroud aren't doing that great, but I'd really have to say it's too soon to tell. What caught my eye more was the fact that no team in the Institute League (outside the Synths) is really doing *that* badly without a shot to turn things around because it's early, as compared to the Brotherhood League which appears to have some real stinkers.

Yeah, the Shroud are good, but there are some factors that may be contributing to their slow start--some obvious and some mysterious. Maybe I am misremembering (and not looking it up right now), but I believe they started slowly last season, too.

Right now, they are just one game back of the wildcard. I have already simmed ahead, so after I write this week's report, I'll add an extra feature on the Shroud's first month of the 2301 season.

Vault 81 returns at the #1 team this week despite having a ho-hum 3-2 week. The Dwellers split at Warwick (#21) and then won 2 of 3 over Oberland (#10).

Concord moves in at #2 this week, up from #6. The Stags had a 4-1 week, which included a 16-1 win over Finch Farm (#24) before dropping one and then sweeping Starlight (#14).

Diamond City remains at #3 with a 3-2 week. The swept Jamaica Plain (#20) to start the week but then dropped 2 of 3 at Roxbury (#16).

Nordhagen Beach (#4) dropped out of the #2 spot this week. They went 3-2 with a sweep of the Adamantium (#6) and then dropping the weekend series at Easy Town (#5) for a 3-3 season series for the top two teams in the Brotherhood League. The Assaultrons were 4-1 on the week with a midweek sweep of Fort Hagen (#18).

Minor League Report

BMU

Players of the Week

Nightwatch Wins CA Best Player Award: 22-year-old Jace Nightwatch made a few Nahant headlines during this past week as the rookie first baseman proved he could compete at the plate with his high-school idols. He captured the attention of fans, journalists and Commonwealth Association officials last week and today took home Player of the Week honors for his effort.

He cracked 9 hits in 16 at-bats to put up a .562 average. Nightwatch collected 1 home run, 3 RBIs and scored 1 run.

This Week's Star Player is Thesea: It can be difficult for a young player to step out of the shadows and assert himself in the Massachusetts Association, but last week Bobby Thesea of the Charles View Cannibals reminded everyone just why he's here as he threw up numbers that made him an easy selection for Player of the Week. Thesea rocked opposing pitching for a .500 average (9-for-18), 6 home runs and 12 RBIs to come away with the award.

Standings

GBRL

Sewers: Big Hit in the South League: Israel Sewers demonstrated his potential to be a star in the game last week and today he took home the South League Player of the Week Award.

The Spectacle Island shortstop wreaked havoc on opposing pitchers last week, pounding them for a .600 average (9-for-15) with 1 home run and 2 RBIs on his way to claiming the honor.

2301 CBO Feature - Fort Hagen's Miserable April

The two-time defending North Charles Association champions are off to a terrible start by their standards, currently tied for last place in the Institute League. At 8-12, they are four games back of the wildcard spot and six games back of first-place Concord. Can the Silver Shroud recover? Their history would say yes, but let's look at a few factors.

First of all, the injury bug has affected two 2300 playoff teams, The Slog and the Shroud.

As you can see, three key players are out, including the season-ending injury for 2B Mark Miller, a huge blow. 1B Jim Tiller will be back in a week, and Well Done Dungan will be back in late May. So, there is still some time to turn around their offense.

Looking at the team page and team stats, you will notice a few factors beyond just the injuries.

With the team currently 9th in runs scored, it will be tough to win games when there so far has been at least one guaranteed loss through the rotation. We'll get to that guaranteed loss later.

Looking at the lineup, you can also see several people starting the season with a below .200 average. 3B Micah Morals (.197/1/7), 1B Grognak Inman (.190/1/4), and SS Organizae Brown (.170/1/5) have been detrimental. LF Andrew Nuka (.212/4/8) is not hitting well, but he does lead the team in homers. Fort Hagen is actually not doing badly in power hitting; it's just the rest of the hitting statistics that look horrible. CF Ben Pawlak (.304/3/11) and RF David Driftwood (.315/3/9) are carrying the offense.

The Starters ERA (3.94, 5th) would look much better if it were not for the player we will feature below, Matt Hope (0-4, 8.84). Derek Green (1-1, 3.51) is not pitching great, certainly a lot better than he looked in the Sole Survivor Series, but nowhere near his 2300 regular season statistics. Brent Hooker (2-0, 2.88) has had the most success, and Mike Cartrette (0-2, 3.03) has pitched well without any run support. The bullpen has also been decent, though closer Curtis Thriceshot (5 SV, 1 BS, 7.27) has been rocked a couple of times, including this weekend in his first blown save where he allowed four earned runs in 2/3 innings.

The major concern has been Hope. Coming into this season, Hope was 26-13 in his first two seasons in Fort Hagen. Not only that, but he was the ace in Atom while being the fourth option with the Shroud. The scouting reports have not changed about him with no apparent ratings drops. He still struggles versus lefties, sporting a career-worst 12.71 currently (career = 5.44). The crazy part was that he is matching his 2296 numbers in ERA versus righties (7/11 with a career of 4.98).

If the 2301 Fort Hagen Silver Shroud want to turn things around, they may need to make a few moves. Considering unloading Hope may be at the top of that list. Of course, if they suffer more injuries, they can start getting ready for 2302 by the end of May. Either way, they may have no Hope.

As I've said until the cows come home, the Shroud are my #1. I've also said I'm generally an optimist. Something else I've always said is this doesn't actually apply to the Shroud

This is all starting to get concerning, yes, and it's disappointing, but really I just kinda see it as a return to form. Early CBO Shroud were terrible, and their performance the past few seasons always seemed like kind of a fever dream outlier. If 2301 is a bad year, I'm not gonna be surprised. Was just wanting slightly more data before making the judgement earlier.

May 2301 - BNN Monthly Report - May 1

BNN Monthly Report

Last Month in the CBO, BMU, and GBRL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

1 May 2301

CBO Players of the Month

Erb Wins NCA Batter of the Month: Dan Erb may be much younger than other hitters in the North Charles Association, but he performed like a seasoned veteran in April to win the Batter of the Month award.

The 24-year-old Concord left fielder hit .402 with 7 home runs, 24 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

Gep Snares SCA Top Batter Award in April: Oren Gep made his presence known as one of the best young stars in the South Charles Association this past month.

The Diamond City Swatters first baseman shined through the month of April and has won the Batter of the Month award.

The 23-year-old hit .377 with 7 home runs, 20 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

North Charles Association Names #1 Pitcher in April: Tony Bertha of Salem had an award-winning April as he took home the North Charles Association Pitcher of the Month award.

"He told me once people used to make fun of the way he pitches," Bertha's pitching coach told reporters. "There wasn't anybody laughing in April except for Tony."

Bertha was all business when he took the mound though, collecting a 4-1 record in 5 starts. He struck out 29 batters in 43.1 innings and kept opponents to a .184 batting average.

Messenger Nabs SCA #1 Pitcher Award: Ronnie Messenger of University Point excelled on the mound in April with a 5-0 record and was named the Pitcher of the Month in the South Charles Association.

Messenger restricted opposing batters to 29 base hits and a .203 batting average. He rang up 20 strikeouts in 41.1 innings of work, surrendered 24 walks, and fashioned a 3.27 ERA.

Rookie Cops North Charles Association Award: The Rookie of the Month Award has been selected and the North Charles Association honor went to Sunshine Tidings hurler, Jason Bourque. For his excellent outings in April he has been named the league's top rookie.

During the month in 4 starts, Bourque was superb with a 2.23 ERA and 3 wins and 1 loss. In 32.1 innings he struck out 16 and gave up 25 hits and 7 walks.

University Point Starting Pitcher Best Rookie: Wilson Beachball is turning heads by putting up some spectacular numbers and today he collected the South Charles Association Rookie of the Month Award.

The 24-year-old University Point starting pitcher threw 44 innings in April, registering a 4-1 record, 4.09 ERA, 25 strikeouts and 16 walks.

BMU Players of the Month

CA Best Hitter Award to College Square's Cram Garge: When Cram Garge stepped up to the plate in April he did it with confidence, and today he was honored with the Commonwealth Association Batter of the Month award.

The young College Square center fielder posted a .333 batting average with 9 home runs, 18 RBIs and scored 16 runs. Garge also worked pitchers for 11 walks to post a .458 on-base percentage.

April's Best Batter Announced: Boston Common Lead Bellies fans may just have witnessed a star player blossoming before their eyes in April.

Jeremy Nicholson put up a remarkable month at the age of 22 and has been named the Massachusetts Association Batter of the Month.

For the month, Nicholson hit .447 with 9 home runs, 19 RBIs and 13 runs scored.

April's Best Hurler in CA is DaKraze: Ricky DaKraze really strutted his stuff in April with 3 wins and no losses and walked off with the Pitcher of the Month Award in the Commonwealth Association. The College Square starter was good news for his club, but bad news for the opposition.

In 21.2 innings of work, DaKraze limited opposing batters to 18 base hits and a .234 batting average. He totaled 12 strikeouts, issued 6 walks and had a 0.83 ERA.

Reliford Picked as April's Pitcher of the Month: There was nobody finer on the mound in April and Josh Reliford cruised to the Massachusetts Association Pitcher of the Month award today.

He was 3-0 with a 3.32 ERA while piling up 19 strikeouts in 19 innings and holding opposing hitters to a .274 batting average.

GBRL Players of the Month

Faraday Top Hitter in NL in April: Lynn Woods Bloatflies fans believe they've got a talented young star in Danny Faraday.

He did nothing to dissuade that notion in April, as he hit .385 with 4 home runs, 12 RBIs and 14 runs scored.

The end result was the right fielder being named the North League Batter of the Month.

Coast Guard Pier First Baseman SL's Best Batter in April: At only 21 years of age, Willie Qesadena could very well be having many more months like the last this in his career.

That would be great news for fans of the Coast Guard Pier Demolitionists, as April was one to remember for the first baseman and he has captured the South League Batter of the Month award.

On the month he hit .431 with 5 home runs, 22 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

NL Pick for Top Pitcher in April is Koontz: Odd Thomas Koontz of the Walden Pond Poets outdistanced his peers on the mound this month. He fashioned a fine 3-0 won-lost mark and 0.67 ERA in 3 starts to get the North League Pitcher of the Month honors.

Koontz had a very impressive April, finishing with 37 strikeouts in 27 innings and holding opposing hitters to a .151 average.

April's Best SL Hurler is Frito: Last month was a very good one for Emmett Frito of Poseidon Energy. So good that he has been picked as the Pitcher of the Month in the South League.

Frito throttled league hitters the entire month, completing April with an impressive 3-0 mark and a 2.05 ERA in 3 starts with 22 strikeouts in 22 innings.

Jamaica-U Point's Ball Snaps Up April Batting Award: Even though he is a newcomer to Boston Youth Development League, Diamond Ball put up some good numbers in April and earned the SR Batter of the Month award.

Really, looking under the hood, they are suffering more from bad luck than anything else right now. That bad luck may last for an extended amount of time, but they do not appear to have any ratings drops that are alarming. I also have not rolled any random events for them that would negatively affect them. That means, I feel they have a better chance than any other of the currently below .500 teams to get it right. Well, Goodneighbor is also in that category, but the Shroud seem to be better on paper. Once Tiller and Dungan get back, the Shroud will rise again!

I mean, if my (limited) experience actually trying to manage a team in this game has taught me anything, luck is indeed usually the key factor The past three seasons with my current team in my my save 1) AI gets them to the World Series. 2) I take over, make no changes, play sub .400 ball. 3) Due to budget cuts, my team gets weaker via losing several key players, I'm now playing .700 ball This game.

Analysis

There was a bit of a shakeup at the top this week, with every spot in the Top 5 being a different one this week.

The University Point Deathclaws enters the first weekend of May with the #1 spot after a 5-0 week. The Claws started the week with a two-game sweep of previously #1 Vault 81 (#9) and then holding serve over Warwick (#24) in three straight. On top of everything, University Point pitching allowed just nine runs in those five games, holding opponents to one run three times.

Diamond City is #2 in a 4-1 week, with their only loss coming yesterday. The Swatters knocked down the Mirelurks in the first two before winning 2 of 3 at Egret (#22).

Nordhagen Beach is atop the NCA and #3 in the Power Rankings. The Party Boys went 3-2 with a split at Concord (#4) and then winning 2 of 3 versus The Slog (#18), with the sole loss being a 14-inning affair.

The Radstags were also 3-2 on the week with that split versus Nordhagen Beach and then a 2-1 series win over Lexington (#19). The first two games of that series saw Concord winning 8-0 and 1-0 over the Synths.

Salem completes the Top 5 at #5. The Witch Hats won both games over Starlight (#15) but then lost 2 of 3 at home versus County Crossing (#17). Despite those two losses, the Hats have been tied with the Stags for the best two teams in the NCA over the last two weeks, each at 7-3.

Minor League Report

BMU

Players of the Week

Couto: Big Hit in the Commonwealth Association: His hard work and hustle paid off this week. The hard-working and hard-playing Ben Couto was rewarded with the Commonwealth Association Player of the Week honors.

The scrappy Mystic Pines Raybathers third baseman hit .538 while collecting 7 hits in 13 at-bats, 2 home runs and 5 RBIs.

Pterror Wins MA Best Player Award: 31-year-old first baseman Jared Pterror of the Forest Grove Pugilists is the talk of the Massachusetts Association for putting on a torrid hitting display last week and claiming the Player of the Week Award.

Pterror rapped out a sensational .429 batting average with 6 hits in 14 at-bats, 5 home runs and 13 RBIs.

Standings

GBRL

Players of the Week

NL Player of the Week Goes to DaWell of Rocky Narrows: This week Baktu DaWell, left fielder for the Rocky Narrows Radscorpions, slashed, mashed and bashed his way to the North League Player of the Week trophy.

DaWell put up a .600 average as he pounded out 6 hits, 1 home run, 6 RBIs and scored 4 runs.

South Boston's Tad Snaps Up Player of the Week: There was no one hotter in the South League last week as Amis Tad attacked enemy pitching with a vengeance to collect the Player of the Week Award.

The 20-year-old South Boston second baseman batted .800 with 8 hits in 10 at-bats, no home runs and 2 RBIs.

Prospects to Watch

SS Rabbit Forest, Medford Medics (Atom) - #8 Prospect - The second-year player drafted 3rd overall by the Cats in 2299, Forest has been thriving in the GBRL. Hitting .404/.500/.673, Forest looks more like a power hitter than the contact hitter he is scouted to be. He has 4 home runs and 11 RBI for the 1st-place Medics in the Northwest Division.

SP Odd Thomas Koontz, Walden Pond Poets (Nordhagen Beach) - #33 Prospect - Koontz has started three games for the Poets and has gone 3-0 with a 0.67 ERA. In 27.0 innings he has allowed 14 hits and two earned runs, walked five, and struck out 37.

LF Delmarva Illeracula, Lyn Woods Bloatflies (County Crossing) - #37 Prospect - Illeracula has been on fire to start the 2301 season. The 5th-overall draft pick by the Warwick Mirelurks in 2299, Illeracula is thriving in his second year. He has hit .411 with a home run and 11 RBI.

SP Godot Beckett, Beantown Brewers (Egret) - #52 Prospect - Beckett has been among the most successful GBRL pitchers in 2301. Beckett is 3-1 with a 1.44 ERA in four starts. A former 2nd-round pick, #47 overall, by Diamond City in the 2299 draft, Beckett can only go up if he increases his pitching repertoire.

"You just go out there and do what you have to do," said Harris, "When I'm up, I try to focus and block everything else out of my mind and have a good at-bat. I'm up there to get a hit or advance a runner, not to get caught up in the emotion of the moment. I hope I can win this award every week."
