Recently picked up a collection of photos by a New York photographer called Spooner and Wells. The New York Giants in the group are dated in pencil on the back as 1910, but the rosters suggest the images could also be 1909.

One mistaken ID leads to something very intriguing. One of the first two images, clearly of 1912 World Series goat Fred Snodgrass, is labeled "Walker" or "Waller." The third and fourth images feature a player I don't recognize, and they're marked Snodgrass.

If it's a simple switch - if Snodgrass was mistaken for Walker/Waller and vice versa - this could be two images of a one-game major leaguer, John Francis "Red" Waller, who worked one inning for New York on April 27th, 1909. The thumbnail at Baseball Reference (Red Waller Minor League Statistics & History | Baseball-Reference.com) looks like a match based on the left ear alone.

Here is the same photo as in Baseball-reference.com, but I think it gives better detail. This image is from John Waller's 1912 Colgan's Chips Red Borders baseball card issue. Comparing this image with your photos, Merkle, I don't think that the left ears look alike, but it's hard to tell because the camera views are from different angles. The physical marking which is the same is the bump in the middle of the chin. I'd leave it as a possibility that it's John Waller, but I just don't think we have enough evidence here to draw a firm identification that it is he.

It's intriguing stuff. Looks to me like a guy just in from the Connecticut State League in 1909, getting his picture taken after parts of two years in New York City, where he obtained a real haircut!

I like the chin similarity, the nose, and the ear - though I agree the last point is tough because of the angle. Of course he might have posed that way in the photo used on the Colgan's simply because the angle downplayed the effect of the ears.

Eddie Hunter in a Burlington Bees uniform 1939-30. He did sign with Burlington in 1932 from a suspended list. I was to play against Wateroo in their opener on 5-18-1932,don't know if he did.
