Sergio Robles 1972 Alt Uni Dodgers

All of the Robles/Dodgers images I've seen posted here have been from spring training 1970, before he was dealt to the Orioles. Here is a photo from his brief regular-season stint with the Dodgers in 1976.

Mike Mansell 1879

There has been some discussion about the identification of the player standing top left in the 1877 Syracuse team photo. In the Beer & Whisky League book it has been identified as Tom Mansell. The second image of the 1878 Syracuse team photo identifies Mike Mansell as top right. Mike Mansell has been acknowledged as being on the rosters of both Syracuse teams for those years and the player identified as Mansell, (Tom or Mike) in both images does appear to be the same individual. I also attach confirmed identifications of Mike Mansell from 82 and 83. Note the ear shape, and to my eye it does seem highly probable that all 4 identifications of Mansell are actually of Mike Mansell, but I would be more than willing to be challenged in this assertion..

1883 St. Louis Browns

Team photo of the 1883 St.Louis Browns as depicted on the front cover of the 'Summer of Beer & Whiskey Book book.

Identifications identified in another book , the Great Encyclopedia of 19th Century baseball are as follows (l-r). It also states waiting to be identified is George Strief.

Standing :- Comiskey, Lewis, Von Der Ahe(?),x,Deasley
Seated :- Gleason,McGinnis,x,Mullane,Dolan
Floor :- Nicol,x,Latham,TMansell

I attach an alternate 1883 image of Tom Mansell which seems to question the identification, and suggests to me that Mansell is more likely to be player standing 2nd right.

I am also doubtful in respect of the identification of Lewis who seems to have slimmed down from the attached image. It would seem more probable to me that the player identified as Lewis is in fact the aforementioned George Strief, image attached. A better match for Lewis could well be the player seated in the middle.

I would welcome any feedback, support or conflict to the above.

I don't have time to do a detailed analysis at the moment but after a cursory examination I'm comfortable saying that the players noted in the 1877 and 1878 Syracuse team photos are almost certainly the same person. Tom had previously been listed on the 1877 Syracuse team roster but I see that he has now been removed. Assuming that Tom did not play for Syracuse in 1877 it is probably safe to say that it is Mike in both photos. That said, both Mansell brothers exhibit the out-turned helix (upper ear rim) noted by UK. I would not be comfortable using that alone as the identifier.

tnfoto/forum, I was hoping that someone might have uncovered a larger and/or more clear version of him in this pic? Thanks!

I've attached the largest version I have of the referenced Cater photo. I've also included a couple of other Oakland A's images, albeit B&W.

I do not have time right now to do a facial comparison for Mansell, but Fred M. Lewis is properly identified. See below for Lewis in the above team photo (l) and from another 1883 Browns team photo (r). It is the same person. The player seated next to Von Der Ahe has a wider face and distinctly different ear angle than Lewis.

Two Old-Timers pass away.

I was wondering if members could supply photos for two 1950s players who passed away in the past week.
First there is outfielder, Bob Usher, who passed away on Dec. 29, 2014 at the age of 89. He was among Wikipedia's 100 oldest living players (65th in age to be exact) at the time of his passing.
Second is pitcher, Stu Miller, who passed away on Jan. 4, 2015, about one week after his 87th birthday in late December. Miller had a long career (1952-1969) and notably had two 14 win seasons, all in relief. He added to baseball lore with the incident where he was supposedly blown off the mound during one of 1961's MLB all-star games. He was an outstanding reliever who was vital to the success of 1962's NL champion San Francisco Giants and 1966's World's Champion Baltimore Orioles. Miller's death is the first death of a well-known player in 2015.
I'd particularly appreciate it if anyone has photos of Miller in a Phillies uniform. He joined the Phillies after a trade with the Cardinals three weeks into the 1956 season and was with the Phils for the remainder of that season, but that was his only season in Philadelphia. There were no Topps baseball cards of Miller pictured as a Phillie.

Coincidentally when I circled back around to prior searches, I found this image freshly uploaded over at baseball-birthdays as offered by Rick over on John's site. Score!

Maybe it will be an upgrade for others as well.....

Kudos to rb77 for the great shots of Stu Miller and Bob Usher. I'm guessing the 1956 Phillies one of Miller is farily rare. Thanks!

That's definitely Bob, not Stu, Miller (though it does look like Stu signed it).

And that Bob Usher looks like the one from Baseball Birthdays. Just sayin'.
