Tidbits BNN Stats: Starting Pitching Rookie Leaders Monday, May 2nd, 1898: So, which rookie starting pitchers are leading the North American BaseBall League in ERA? Joe Yeager, WSN, 0.90 Jay Hughes, NY1, 1.75 Sam Leever, CHA, 3.23 Bill Duggleby, CL4, 3.48 Ned Garvin, CL4, 3.59 News McGann Hits for the Cycle Friday, April 22nd, 1898: "How sweet it is, when the good part of the bat makes contact with the baseball." That's how Ambrose McGann, the Philadelphia third baseman, described what happened in today's 16-4 victory over the Chicago Orphans -- hitting for the cycle. In baseball, a player hits for the cycle when he hits a single, a double, a triple and a home run in the same game, though not necessarily in that order. Collecting the hits in that exact order is known as a "natural cycle," something that almost never occurs. "I heard that sound every time I hit the ball -- it really was a special game for me." It was a game good enough for him to make a little history. He bombed Chicago pitching for 4 hits in 4 at-bats and his name will now go into the record book. McGann also racked up 3 runs batted in and 3 runs scored in the game. Ambrose McGann flied out in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit a two-run home run off Mickey Hughes in the 3rd, doubled in the 6th and tripled in the 8th. In his season totals, McGann has 3 home runs, .367 BA, .396 OBP, 14 RBIs and 10 runs scored. He has played in 15 games. 200 Wins for New York's Terry Saturday, May 7th, 1898: His goal at twenty was to win twenty games one year, pitch until he was thirty, win the league pennant and to make some money. Well, Adonis Terry did something even better -- the 33-year-old New York Giants star has now won 200 games in his career. That put him in a very select group of pitchers. He joined that exclusive club today at League Park II in Cincinnati by whipping the Cincinnati Reds 7-4, holding them to 8 hits in 9 innings while chalking up 3 strikeouts and 5 walks. In the postgame interview, the modest Terry said, "It's special to win 200 games. You don't do it by yourself. You do it with good stuff and a good bullpen. You are only as good as the guys behind you. Years from now I might look back on it and give myself a little pat on the back." Lifetime Terry has a 200-169 won-lost record with a 3.07 ERA. Keenan Fans 15 Colonels Sunday, May 8th, 1898: If you can't hit 'em, you can't beat 'em. That was the story today at the Philadelphia-Louisville clash at Eclipse Park II. Athletics twirler Kid Keenan gunned down 15 Colonels via strikeouts and beat them 6-1. In a superb performance he allowed 4 hits and issued 4 walks for the victory. Currently Keenan has a 4-2 won-lost record in 7 starts with a 1.58 ERA. He also has 70 strikeouts in 57 innings.

Tidbits BNN Stats: Starting Pitching Leaders Monday, April 24th, 1899: So, which starting pitchers are leading the North American BaseBall League in opponents batting AVG? Pete Conway, BOS, .193 Kid Keenan, PHA, .195 John Ewing, PHI, .202 Cannonball Titcomb, DET, .205 Frank Gilmore, CIN, .222 News 200 Victories for Al Mays Wednesday, April 26th, 1899: History was made today at Robison Field -- Al Mays won game #200 to seal his name in the league record books. The St. Louis ace downed the Boston Beaneaters 2-1 to gain entrance into the elite 200 Club. "I was wound up at first. I think I threw too hard," remarked Mays, "I had to calm down and go out there and pitch... not just throw. I think I got better as the game wore on. I started to think less about 200 wins and more about doing what I had to do." On his lifetime ledger sheet, the 33-year-old Mays has won 200 and lost 167 with a 3.43 ERA. McFarland Touches All Bases, Hits for Cycle Monday, May 1st, 1899: It was a special day for Ed McFarland at Boundary Field -- the Boston catcher hit for the cycle -- getting every type of hit possible. The 24-year-old McFarland racked up 1 single, 1 double, 1 triple and 1 home run to get his name mentioned in the record book. For the game he was 4-5 with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored. But all that didn't win the ballgame as the Senators took home the victory 11-9. In the words of the Washington manager, "He hit everything we threw. There was just no getting him out today." "I'm glad for Ed," his manager said. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing and a nice feather in his cap. Would've been better if we could have won the game for him, too." Speaking to the press after the game, McFarland gave the key for his record-setting day. "I just got some good pitches to hit." Ed McFarland hit an RBI triple in the 1st, hit an RBI double in the 3rd, grounded out in the 5th, singled in the 7th and hit a two-run home run off Nick Altrock in the 9th. McFarland is presently hitting at a .349 pace with 3 home runs, 24 RBIs and has scored 24 times. Tiernan Collects Hit Number 2000 Monday, May 8th, 1899: Mike Tiernan reached the 2000-hit milestone this afternoon at Washington Park III. The 32-year-old Giants center fielder went 2-for-5 in a losing effort in the New York 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Brooklyn Superbas. Tiernan's career batting average is .321. In 1557 games, he has gotten 2000 hits, 134 home runs, 1081 RBIs and scored 1328 runs. O'Brien Shows Off, Hits for Cycle Thursday, May 11th, 1899: "It's too bad I can't do that every day," Tom O'Brien said with a smile to reporters after today's game. "It would do wonders for my batting average." O'Brien had every right to be in a good mood after hitting for the cycle today against Louisville at Eclipse Park II. The Americans won the ballgame 13-5, he hit for the cycle, had a 4-for-5 game and boosted his batting average up a few points. The 26-year-old Boston first baseman chalked up 3 runs batted in and 2 runs scored for the game, too. Who says you can't have it all? He told the press that a triple is the tough hit to get in a cycle. "As soon as it left the bat, guys jumped off the bench and were rooting hard for me to have enough gas to get there," O'Brien said. "It was hard to enjoy it... I was breathing too hard... you got to really be in shape to run out a triple." Tom O'Brien struck out in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit an RBI triple in the 5th, doubled in the 7th and hit a two-run home run off Jack Taylor in the 8th. O'Brien is hitting .313 this year with 1 home run and 26 RBIs. He also has an OBP of .356, 8 walks and scored 24 times.

He joined that exclusive club today at Huntington Avenue Grounds by whipping the Baltimore Orioles 4-0, holding them to 5 hits in 9 innings while chalking up 5 strikeouts and no walks. In the postgame interview, the modest Conway said, "It's special to win 200 games. You don't do it by yourself. You do it with good stuff and a good bullpen. You are only as good as the guys behind you. Years from now I might look back on it and give myself a little pat on the back." Lifetime Conway has posted 200 victories and 190 defeats with a 3.17 ERA. Toad Ramsey Whips Giants for #250 Friday, July 21st, 1899: Chicago ace Toad Ramsey solidified his place in league history with his 250th career victory today at West Side Park II. Ramsey and the Orphans bested New York 7-2. He checked the Giants on 9 hits in 9 innings and finished the day with 11 strikeouts and 1 walk. "I've worked hard for this day," Ramsey said. "Sometimes I didn't think it would happen. Most of the time it seemed so far off. Now it's here. It's like a dream!" Since his debut in the league, Ramsey has posted 250 victories and 273 defeats with an ERA of 3.18. Ed Dugan Tames Pittsburgh 5-2 for #300 Sunday, July 23rd, 1899: Superbas ace Ed Dugan reeled in his 300th career victory by beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 at Exposition Park. In his historic win, he notched 4 strikeouts in 9 innings, yielded 2 runs and 5 hits, while surrendering no walks. "I tried to focus on each batter," said Dugan after the game, "but as the game goes by, I couldn't help but think about the possibility. 300 is a big number. It's a pretty exclusive club and I'm honored to be a member." So far in his career Dugan has 300 wins and 326 losses and a 2.91 ERA. #300 for St. Louis Pitcher Bill Vinton Friday, July 28th, 1899: St. Louis's Bill Vinton took the hill at Polo Grounds III today in search of his 300th career win. The 34-year-old ace found it against the New York Giants. After the historic victory, his manager told reporters, "I saw a tremendous sigh of relief when this thing was over. He was just looking to hug everyone in sight." He worked 9 innings with 6 strikeouts and 1 walk in the 12-3 victory, checking New York on 7 hits. "It a big milestone in my career," admitted Vinton. "When you get close to it, you worry about it a lot. It's done now... and I can relax and enjoy it." In his career, Vinton has racked up 300 wins and 302 losses and posted an ERA of 2.76. Waddell Tames Colonels 4-2, 16 Ks Friday, August 4th, 1899: Chicago got the best of the Louisville Colonels today at South Side Park II. They won the game 4-2 behind the fine pitching of Rube Waddell, who totaled 16 strikeouts in a sensational outing. Waddell notched the victory by holding the Colonels to 6 hits, while giving up 2 walks. This year Waddell has registered 16 wins and 12 losses in 30 starts with a 2.63 ERA while registering 227 strikeouts and 70 walks in 260 innings.

"That's as good as I've ever seen him throw," his manager said. "I've never seen so many bad swings in my life. These guys didn't have a chance." Keenan had very little to say to after the game. "We won and that's the bottom line. I had a good game. And we beat Louisville." The Louisville manager wasn't too happy with the game. "He pitched a very good game. You have to tip your cap to him." Game 5 Sunday 10/1 Philadelphia 11 St Louis 4: Phil Geier HR, 3 RBIs, 4-5. Joe Donohue 2 RBIs. Philadelphia Wins North American Series! Sunday, October 1st, 1899: This is the time of the year when grown men are sometimes reduced to tears. This year the Philadelphia Athletics shed tears of joy and the St. Louis Perfectos shed some sad ones, all because of a baseball game. The Athletics eliminated the Perfectos today 11-4 at Columbia Park and locked up their 5th North American BaseBall League North American Series championship, winning the series 4-1. The Athletics finished the regular season in the American League with a 88-66 record, ending up in first place in the division standings. Offseason Mathews Honored by NABL Hall of Fame Tuesday, October 3rd, 1899: Bobby Mathews was a giant among pitchers and retired at the age of 37. Today his baseball career culminated in the ultimate -- induction in the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame. "My dad told me as a kid, 'To dream big and dream always'. That's something I never forgot. It's what got me here today at the Hall of Fame." One of his former teammates said when he introduced Mathews to the audience, "I have never seen such dedication to perfection. Anything less than perfect and he was not happy." During his outstanding career Mathews appeared in 585 games, struck out 913 batters and walked 516 in 4319.2 innings of work. His lifetime won-lost record was 245 victories and 248 defeats. He had a 2.27 ERA, and opposing hitters batted .271 against him. Later Mathews told the audience during his installation speech, "I'm not trying to be cocky, but I set such a high standard for myself. I wasn't happy when I pitched seven innings and gave up two runs and got a win." Dreams, dedication and strong desire combined with talent can get you to the Hall of Fame or wherever you want to go. Just ask the newest member of the Hall of Fame. I decided to take over the Washington Senators. ![]() ![]() ![]() Awards Glove Wizard Award Winners in NL Announced Friday, October 13th, 1899: It's been said that the best offense is a good defense. That's why contending teams are always looking to improve on the defensive side of the game. Keeping runs from scoring is just as good as driving them in. The top fielders have been chosen in the National League for 1899. Here are the Glove Wizard Award winners: Pitcher: Adonis Terry (New York Giants) Catcher: John Otten (Cincinnati Reds) First Baseman: Tom McCreery (Cincinnati Reds) Second Baseman: Nap Lajoie (Boston Beaneaters) Third Baseman: Bill Bradley (Pittsburgh Pirates) Shortstop: Bill Dahlen (New York Giants) Left Fielder: Elmer Smith (Philadelphia Phillies) Center Fielder: Algie McBride (Boston Beaneaters) Right Fielder: Willie Keeler (Cincinnati Reds) AL Glove Wizard Award Winners Announced Friday, October 13th, 1899: "Hit 'em where they ain't" is a great hitting philosophy, but it doesn't always work when a fielder can seemingly appear out of nowhere to make the play. These magicians are often taken for granted as the season grinds along, but today they take center stage. The American League Glove Wizard Award selections for 1899 are: Pitcher: Pete Conway (Boston Americans) Catcher: Tom Daly (Baltimore Orioles) First Baseman: Candy LaChance (Milwaukee Brewers) Second Baseman: Harry Truby (Baltimore Orioles) Third Baseman: John McGraw (Detroit Tigers) Shortstop: George Davis (Baltimore Orioles) Left Fielder: Fred Clarke (Cleveland Blues) Center Fielder: Bill Lange (Chicago White Sox) Right Fielder: Steve Brodie (Washington Senators) Williams Best NL Rookie in 1899 Saturday, October 14th, 1899: Rookies are supposed to be seen, but not heard. But that wasn't the case with St. Louis's Jimmy Williams. He spoke up loudly and often this season on his way to winning the National League Newcomer of the Year Award for 1899. To be accurate, the 22-year-old second baseman let his performance do the talking. In his debut season Williams piled up some good stats, hitting .300, driving in 109 runs and scoring 99 times, while playing in 150 games. The Cardinals newcomer also had 35 doubles, 14 triples and 8 home runs. AL Presents Top Pitcher Trophy Monday, October 16th, 1899: The Philadelphia Athletics have a rising superstar or maybe even a budding Hall-of-Famer in the making. Keenan compiled a 30-6 record in 42 starts, tallied 493 strikeouts in 350 innings and recorded a 2.01 ERA. Name Changes St Louis Perfectos change to St Louis Cardinals Cleveland Spiders change to Cleveland Blues. Louisville Colonels move to Milwaukee and are named Milwaukee Brewers. NABL News: Free Agents File Friday, October 27th, 1899: The stroke of midnight signaled the arrival of the often wild and unpredictable free agent filing period. Most general managers across the NABL already have an iron or two in the fire. The players, too, are well-prepared for negotiations. The only participant to get a true head start was the rumor mill, which has been steadily building up heat over the past several weeks. General managers have the whole offseason to work the free agent market, but the big explosion will probably come quickly as some of these hot properties hit the market today: 1. Billy Clingman, 29 year-old shortstop 2. Jake Stenzel, 32 year-old catcher 3. Dummy Hoy, 37 year-old center fielder 4. Charlie Ferguson, 36 year-old starting pitcher 5. Jim McTamany, 36 year-old center fielder NABL News: First-Year Player Draft Wednesday, November 1st, 1899: Washington, Cincinnati, New York, Philadelphia and Milwaukee have the opportunity to really make some organization-altering changes today. Their GMs have been huddled around the conference room all night, playing over scenarios with the scouting staff, arguing out the merits of every possible scenario they can fathom. Who they pick might set their clubs up for ten years of quality baseball or it might mean ten years of languishing as an also-ran. BNN experts have concluded that these ten young men should be picked at the top of the draft: 1. Fred Jacklitsch, 23 year-old catcher out of college. 2. Danny Murphy, 23 year-old second baseman out of college. 3. Curt Bernard, 21 year-old right fielder out of college. 4. Pat Dillard, 26 year-old third baseman out of college. 5.
