1974-75 off season notes

All Star RP Ramon Hernandez received in the Patek trade was injured during the 1974 season and will miss all of 1975. His estimated arb amount is $110k and he's asking for more than that. If he's able to play the next year he will be 36 years old. There's no choice for a low payroll team like the Pirates but to release him.

The trade section "Team Needs" has listed Good RP for a long time. Oct 29 an offer was received offering 26 yo LH RP Dave LaRoche for 30 yo C Manny Sanguillen. Negotiation turned this into Sanguillen and 26 yo AA C Rimp Lanier and 23 yo AA RP Jim Sadowski for 25 yo LH RP Gary Lavelle and 29 yo C Rene Lachemann. Payroll dropped $160k. Fan interest dropped 5 points.

24 yo C Milt May is ready for prime time. Ed Ott in AAA is ready too but hits lefty like May so right hitting Lachemann gets the backup job.

Shopped 1B Bob Robertson age 29 2.5 stars and accepted an offer of LF Rick Miller age 27 2.5 stars but can also play CF (what I'm interested in) and RF.

Here is the payroll rank throughout history with to date calculations at several points and a separate one from 68, the year of the first first place finish to 75, the year of the most recent first place finish. I was hoping the rank would be a bit lower.

I've noted I'm doing something different than the AI teams. They tend to add payroll during the season and I don't. So by All Star break my payroll rank has often dropped by two or three. I'm wondering if the season opening payroll is the right measuring point or if perhaps two or three measuring points would give a more accurate picture.

Anyway, I've won the Moneyball Award once, so I suppose that counts for something!
