2013 CHICAGO IRON PIGS OPENING DAY
PITCHING STAFF
  • Bobby Guijosa beats out Dan Ferguson for the 5th spot. Ferguson, rather than bullpen him, goes back to New Orleans to start and continue getting innings.
  • Morris, Powers, Wood, Guijosa, and Hawkins will open the season in the rotation.

BULLPEN
  • McKitrick nailed down the closers job. Becker and Gross will set him up.
  • Ricks, Tar, Nicol, Camarillo, and Mark Williams will hold down the other 5 spots.
  • RH Bae-hee Kim had a great spring and will be first in line for a call up. Danny Floyd now appears to be that “4A” guy and had major issues when told he was being optioned.
  • We will look to make deals for some of these guys prior to opening day.
  • A day before opening day we made a deal. Sending Graves and OF Tom Martinez to Dallas for 27 year old IF Pete Crawford. We cleared 2 spots on the 40 man and acquired a good IF as depth. He's 27, and the logjam at New Orleans meant he was sent down to Milwaukee and he'll lead off there.
  • I don't usually allow 27 year olds to hang around my AA roster but he's good enough to allow it and his defense will help a young and talented pitching staff.

FINANCIALS
  • Mr Johns has seen fit to raise our budget to 80 million, third highest in the league. We will max out our spend on Player Development, and scouting. We won't just spend money to spend but we have it if we need to take on a contract or two to get talent.
  • Fan loyalty is breaking the meter, while interest could not be higher.
  • Season ticket prices rose 25% to 17.50 while sales are down 1%. Per Game attendance is projected to be down a bit (4.2%) however per-game revenue is expected to rise almost 20%.
  • Our payroll sits at 24.3 million on opening day, 32nd in the league and our 80 million budget ranks 3rd. We have almost 50 million available with near that, 46, available for extensions.
  • If I do nothing else I'd like to get Garcia under a long term deal. In VERY preliminary talks he's looking at near 80 million over 8 years. Doesn't do me much good to “buy out' arbitration years at values significantly higher than estimates. We'll keep the light on.
  • We did inquire about Joey Morris, and talks are ongoing with the ace of the staff. Scouts are all noting his improvements and progression and he is now a 4.5 star player.

  • New Englands Jorge Madrid got his 2500th career hit on Saturday. He's 5th among active players and 15th all-time. Andy Peterson of LA is the all time leader and active leader with 2983, soon to become the 1st ever to achieve the 3000 hit plateau.
  • Free agent Matt Graham is 2nd, at 2971 and Chicago Hitmen's Marco Lopez is 3rd at 2872.

CHICAGO, MORRIS, COME TO TERMS
Chicago announced the signing of 25-year-old Joey Morris to an 8-year, $26.45 million contract extension. Morris, who fanned a career high 14 on opening day, is said to be elated.
The 8th year is a 5.5$ million dollar player option.

BACKROOM CHATTER
If he's the pitcher we think he is the deal is an absolute steal. Salaries of 640K, 1.4, 1.7, 2.0, 4.5, 5.2 and 5.5 with a 5.5 million dollar player option. He'll be worth 2-3 times that much if things play out.
His 14K opening day effort was a 'push' on his end I think, to show us he's capable of that staff ace moniker. (Much the same as I did opening day 1997 in LA)

  • On Friday, Jets RF and 2009 MVP Chris Cross went 4-4 and hit for the cycle for the first time in his career.

BACKROOM CHATTER
What the heck happened to my defense? The Bullpen is struggling too. It's 2 weeks in, and we're 8-4, so no panic button, but Pedraza hitting .115 and Nieves at .163 with no homers is troubling. I think I need to move Nicol (11.57 ERA) and watch Justin Tar (9.53) close this week.
Nicol is optioned on Sunday, and lefty Andy Bergsten is added to the 40-man and recalled. A minor league FA sign 2 years ago he went 6-2 1 SV 2.88 over 50 innings with 50 K's and 12 walks at AA last season. He's just 25 and rated a 2-star prospect.

A, AA, and AAA open their seasons

NEW ORLEANS
  • Jesus Ramirez (1B), Fred Amling (IF), Javier Mariscal (IF), Anthony Tripp (IF) and Dave Wheeler anchor a veteran lineup stocked with guys providing depth for the parent club. Jimmy Young has made the jump and at 20 years old is one of the leagues youngest players. Matt Chiquete is back after a great season last year (.304/.355/.4800 16 HR 84 RBI).
  • On the staff the big news is Allan Henderson closing at AAA a year after being drafted. At 22 he is close. A 6 man rotation of 2.5-3-star arms with Dan Ferguson (21) and Brian Pennington (23) and Tony Mejia (22 10-6 2.77 ERA in 27 starts between AA-AAA last year).
MILWAUKEE
  • C Troy Zehnder (2.5 stars) and SS Eddie Garza (2.5 stars) are the recent draftees at AA along with recently acquired 2B Pete Crawford (2.5 stars) are the top talent in AA.
  • On the mound Allen Velazquez (2.5 stars) and Omar Benson (2.5 stars) lead the staff with lefty Ramon Rivera (2.5 stars) closing after struggling last year at AAA and in Chicago.
  • Vasquez was 15-3 2.85 last year and won POTY for Nashville. Benson was acquired in 2012 from Las Vegas in a May trade and went 6-7 4.39 in 21 starts for Milwaukee last year.
ALBUQUERQUE
  • Working on a 3-peat this year. A lot of talent on the roster.
  • C Grant Morse (2.5 stars), 1B Mike Johnson (2.5 stars), 3B Rick Arbuckle (2.5 stars), SS Derek Dames (2.5 stars), CF Jaden Brown (2.5 stars), and 19-year-old Yoseikazu Suzuki (3.5 stars) pepper their lineup. Mathew Brittingham hit .322-22-60 at Albuquerque last year and at 21 he's back a third season. He went 14-27 2 HR 6 RBI to win POTW in the seasons first week.
  • 2012 first-rounder Luis Ornelas (4.5 stars) fanned 10, allowing 0 earned runs in an opening-day CG win. David Arroyo (2.5 stars), John Timmerman (2 stars) Jesus Montano (2.5 stars) and Todd Barbour (2 stars) round out a solid 5 man rotation.

IRON PIG NEWS
  • 23 year old P prospect Brian Pennington will miss the rest of the year with a torn UCL. This will be the 2nd year in a row he's been hurt in April and missed the year.
  • Fred Amling is scorching at New Orleans. Going to option Pedraza and recall Amling. Their carbon copies defensively.
  • Going to give it 8 more days, the Month of April, before I dig into it all. But it's concerning to say the least. Hitting the cover off the ball and unable to get anyone out. Add to that the Defense seems allergic to clean plays all the sudden.

PETERSON FORMS HIS OWN CLUB
A 1st inning single in Sunday's 7-2 win over Oklahoma City made Phoenix Roadrunner LF Andy Peterson the 1st, and only, member of the 3000 hit club. The 36-year-old surefire HOF'er is a career .311 hitter with 439 HR's and 1640 RBI's while scoring 1662 runs. He was the 2000 Hank Aaron award winner, is a 12-time all-star, 2-time postseason series MVP, and a 7-time Silver Slugger.
Every day of his 16-year career has been spent in Roadrunner copper, and like his team, he still seeks his 1st world championship.

LEAGUE HIGHLIGHTS
AL POTW- 2B Colin Courtright (BRK) 11-23 5 HR 11 RBI
NL POTW- 3B Jose Nieves (CIP) 15-28 4 HR 8 RBI
  • On Friday Atlanta announced they had extended 2-time all-star Jason Fricke to a 5 year 52.2 million dollar extension. The 31 year old infielder is off to a career best .339-7-21 through the first 5 weeks. He is a career .287/.364/.439 hitter with 284 2B 41 3B and 144 HR and is 124-187 in SB.
  • Brooklyn ends the week on a 10-game winning streak and leads the AL East by 6 at 24-9.
  • We end the week on an 8 game streak, 8-2 in our last 10, and are still 1 GB as El Paso ends the week on a 3 game streak but is 9-1 in their last 10.

NIEVES FINDS HIS WAY
On April 7th of this year Jose Nieves went 0-3 and saw his average sink to .143 after the seasons 1st week. Zero HR's, 1 RBI. Since that day, in 24 games, he's gone 39-93 (.419) to raise his average from .143 to an NL 2nd best .359 at the end of this week. 8 2B's, 3 3B's and 11 HR's with 19 RBI in those 24 games.
  • With Dietz having back issues Krieg has moved to CF, putting Nieves in the DH role and allowing Chavez to get AB's. The results speak for themselves.
  • Bill Brumfield is a day or two away from being totally healthy, but he's powered through and played the entire two weeks except when forced to take a day off.

IRON PIG NEWS
  • At weeks end the team ranks 1st in every significant offensive category.
  • Unsure of the water in Albuquerque but they have now placed 5 pitchers on the IL, including 3 of their opening day 5 SP.
  • Luis Ornelas got his 1st AA start and lost 3-0. He fanned 10 in 7 allowing 3 ER.

IRON PIG NEWS

INJURIES HIT CHICAGO
A 4-3 loss to 2nd-place El Paso wasn't enough bad news for the Iron Pigs. Young slugger Bill Brumfield was HBP and suffered a deep bone bruise that will sideline him for 2-3 weeks.
Then, CF Kevin Dietz gunned down a Husky runner at home plate, and in doing so, hurt his back. The same back that's been a nuisance since he was acquired. He'll miss at least 3 weeks.
1B Jesus Ramirez , hitting .326/.372/.486 at New Orleans, and OF Cory Dillon (.306/.379/476 at AAA) are recalled.

NL POTW- SS Alex Ramirez (PIT) 10-25 4 HR 13 RBI
  • Jacksonville learned 36 year old Danny Apker (1-4 6.14 this year) will be lost for the year with a serious shoulder injury. Apker was a thorn in our side to those remember the playoffs last year. The 2-time all-star is 142-96 3.92 over his 10 years and 330 starts with 2019 IP and 1598 K's.

IRON PIG NEWS
  • On Sunday, AA OF John Tite hit 2 HR's, including a Grand Slam, and drove in 7 in a 12-10 Milwaukee win. Tite, a 20 year old minor league FA signing, hit .257/.400/.514 at Albuquerque last year with 26 HR's and 75 RBI's. He's currently hitting .262/.367/.508 with 9 HR and 19 RBI through 36 games with the Hawks. He's rated a 2-star prospect with ++ power.
  • 2012 16th round draft pick Joe Holsinger came with an arm. The 21 year old is a mid to upper 90's flamethrower. His issue? Control. He was in the rotation at Albuquerque last year going 3-5 4.93 in 16 GS with 80.1 IP 79 H 97 K to 42 BB.
  • This year he started out in the bullpen. He was throwing very well, but still battling control problems. Injuries necessitated a move to the rotation.
  • He's made 5 starts. He is 4-0 in 33.2 IP allowing 18 H while fanning 37 and walking 17. He's won POTG 3 times with 3 of the starts being scoreless outings including a 13K 1-hit 6.1 inning start a few weeks ago.
  • On Tuesday, he went 7 on 2H 8 K 3 BB 0 R in a 9-0 win over Ft Worth.
  • On Saturday, he was awarded Class A Pitcher of the month.
  • Albuquerque SS AJ Lanigan, taken last year in the 10th round, went 13-20 2 HR 8 RBI and is destroying Class A pitching to the tune of .372-5-15. He's ready to jump but at 19 and with Garza and Dames ahead of him there is no rush.

  • The best month in our brief history. 21-8 and an offense that just went nuts. The pitching, especially the starters, had a very good month.
  • Our defense, .698 is 3rd in efficiency, and climbing from last to 9th with a -5.7 ZR. 2nd in K's, HA, OPP AVG, BABIP but still hammered by walks where we are 15th.
  • The offense is just dominating, across the board.
  • Not sure if any one number jumps out, but based on my complaints, I was shocked to see our record vs LHP.

2013 IBL DRAFT
Pittsburgh landed another young potential ace. Everyone expected Frohling to go 1st.
I was intimately involved in the first 7-10 rounds, and then left to allow the scouts to do their thing. We had the 31st pick, so the common sense approach was used, and we took the best player available.
1-31) Robbie Czarnomski IF RHH (18) 5-stars. Has every offensive tool possible and can run, will be a good middle to left side defender.
2-73) Dean Hahn C RHH (18) 5-stars. Already a + IBL level defender with gold glove tools. Chance to hit .300+ with elite bat to ball skills.
3-97) Bill Bundy LHP (18) 3.5-stars. Potential middle of the rotation guy with 2 ++ pitches. Lots of work to do on the third.
3-107) John Alex RHP (21) 4-stars. comfortably in the upper 90's with triple digit stuff. Already rated a 20 fastball, with a curveball that projects as 20+.Future closer or back end guy.
4-119) Jonathan Brady RHP (19) 3-stars. Potential mid-rotation starter with elite off-speed stuff. Sits 90-92 with ability to get more.
4-140) Jake Schmidt RHP (21) 3-stars. Huge debate in the war room on this one. 21-year-old “pitcher”. Pure pitcher. 4+ offerings with elite change, all the makeup you could want. But no none thinks he'll have the stamina to pile innings on. If he did, he's likely a top 20 pick.
7-235) Gil Ermatinger C LHH (21) 4.5-stars. Stunned he was still around in the 7th. No makeup questions, another IBL level defender today, right now. With a legit middle-of-the-order bat potential. Too good to pass up. So what if we have 4 elite catchers
8-267) John Ingalls RHP (19) 3.5 stars. Future back end or closer arm. Does it “passively” with 3 ++ pitches and a 21 grade curve ball.
9-299) Jorge Flores IF RHH (18) 2.5-stars. Elite middle IF defender or 3B. Big time speed and a bat that could become something.
10-331) Cody Mullins C LHH (21) 4-stars. Yes, a third catcher. A college bat who signed the day of the draft and is headed to AAA to start his pro career.

CHICAGO, AMIDST A SEASON HIGH 7 GAME LOSING STREAK, DEALS
Chicago Iron Pig GM Curt Schilling was resolute as he stood before the media today. “What's happening is unacceptable. I am more than aware a team goes through ups and downs during a 162 game season but this club is far too good to be this bad.”
This came on the heals of two announced trades.
In the first deal Chicago sent SP Andy Powers (5-6 5.33) to San Diego in exchange for P prospect Blake Reynolds (20) and IF Andy Alvarado (22).
The second involved sending IF Javier Mariscal (27) to Phoenix in exchange for P Prospect Danny Eckenrode and pitcher Mike Vincent (27).

BACKROOM CHATTER
I wanted to make a bigger splash, but this was all I could get done. Powers has been a solid contributor this year, but is struggling mightily, which is part of the reason our pen is getting hammered. Reynolds is a 20-year-old 2.5-star prospect with middle rotation potential who will start in Nashville for now. San Diego took him in 2011 in the 16th round.
Alvarado is ++ defender at 2B and can play 3B with very good offensive tools. ++ speed as well. He heads to Milwaukee (AA).
The 2nd trade was more about someone else valuing a player we have depth at. Mariscal did ok in his brief call up but he's superfluous with our organizational depth. Phoenix tried to get him when we made the deal with Vegas last year.
Eckenrode was a 16th round pick by Phoenix two years ago out of USC. He's another legitimate middle rotation arm who will start at AA Milwaukee. Our scouts rate him 2.5 stars.
Vincent is a 27 year old RH reliever with a ++ fastball that hits triple digits. He'll head to AAA. Another 2.5 star guy.
That 11 game lead we so enjoyed is now down to 5.
After all the moves RP prospect Allen Henderson is placed on the 40-man and recalled, Nate Draper will take over Powers rotation spot.

6/29- JAX 4 CIP 3 Yup, 9 straight. Henderson in his first IBL appearance BS 1.2 IP 0 R Guijosa 5.1 IP 5 H 4 K 2 ER Roberts 2H HR (13) RBI (45)

LEAGUE HIGHLIGHTS
AL POTW- LF Jose Villa (BRK) 11-24 3 HR 6 RBI
NL POTW- RF Jeff Zarrella (FRE) 11-20 2 HR 7 RBI
  1. Alex Bazaldua (EP) went 4-5 and homered 3 times driving in 4 in a 9-8 win over San Diego. Astute readers might remember his name from the post-season last year. Also he hit 50 HR's on the seasons final day.
IRON PIG NEWS
  • Albuquerque (A) 3B Rick Arbuckle went 15-29 2 HR 5 RBI to win POTW. He's hitting .327-10-40
  • New Orleans CF Matt Chiquete hit .348-7-20 with 25 runs to win AAA POTM
  • Milwaukee's Marcos Acosta took home AA Pitcher of the month going 4-1 1.98
