Clemente Alvarez: He bargained his way into the majors
Clemente Alvarez is another guy like Tom Jacquez, whose
entire MLB career consisted of a couple of games for the 2000 Phillies. Alvarez had been a catcher in the Phillies system for a few years and spent 2000 mostly in double A. In September as the 2000 minor league season was ending, the Phillies offered him a chance to come to the majors the following year as their bullpen catcher. After a conference with his agent, Alvarez said he'd retire to take the job the following year if he was added to the major league roster for the remainder of the 2000 season. Alvarez had spent more than a decade in the minors and with a brief trip to the majors at least in his mind he'd have something to show for all those long bus trips to play in half-empty stadiums. Remarkably the Phillies front office agreed to his proposal. Alvarez played in two MLB games, his first on 9/19/00 in Philadelphia and then another in the final game of the season in his hometown of Miami against the Marlins. He went 1 for 5. |

Clemente Alvarez: Back-up Catcher, Bullpen Catcher & Smooth Negotiator
Clemente Alvarez (2000 Phillies)

Reposting Error and Bart Johnson as aPirate
Quote:
As for Bart Johnson trying for the Buccos, there is an interesting interview on the White Sox Interactive site with him, done by Mark Liptak (WSI's FlyingSock.com News System). ML: 1977 was the last year you played with the Sox, they released you in April 1978. Why did you decide to retire? BJ: “Well I actually signed with Oakland after the Sox released me and played for their minor league team in Vancouver. Then when Chuck (Tanner) became the Pirates manager in 1979, I tried out with them. They optioned me to the Mexican League and I pitched there until a strike came. I remember getting paid and put money in each of my shoes and left. I never went back.” Last edited by keonleafs; 01-21-2015 at 07:26 PM. |

Already posted on the minors side; can anyone conclusively disprove the mystery Indians isn't Danay Covert, the Indians' No. 4 pick in 1968 and who listed in the system until 1973. Was a big righty hitter from Texas, but that's where it ends for my search. The bat defnitely says Covert.

Need Help ID'ing Red Sox
Found a few photos in the TV files that I can't identify (I believe they're from the F-G area).
Can anyone help ID these Sox? |

I'm Going To Go Out On A Limb Here
The batting pose is our unknown Clevelander circa 1972, from Topps Vault, probably with a last name starting with "J."
The portrait is Danay Covert, from the Indians' 1971 yearbook. Not seein' it ;-) |

By George, I think you've got it. Fits in the alphabetical grouping, too. Well done.

Luis Isaac
Here's another Luis Isaac comparison -- this time to an older Isaac without facial hair. I think the Pitching Coach photo is at Batavia in 1981. Looks like tnfoto nailed it.

First Off Welcome back Merkle923...
I wonder if you can give us any insight on the Topps action shots I posted which are for sale on E bay right now ... Could these be the inspiration for the infamous 1971 Topps in action cards? At any rate I enjoy the images as they bring back memories of my childhood watching the 1970 Yankees Mets and Phillies on tv ....... http://stores.ebay.com/The-Topps-Vau...&_sc=1&_sop=10 Last edited by bearman14; 01-22-2015 at 08:17 AM. |

Topps Action Prints
Your surmise is correct. The Topps files were full of these - color prints, about 3-1/2 x 5, the ones at Yankee Stadium taken by NYY team photographer Michael Grossbardt, also some from Shea and Connie Mack Stadium, 1970-72.
These were used or intended for the experiments with action photography in the regular cards in '71 and '73 and the "In Action" cards of 1972. Unlike everything else in which printing was actually done from those negatives, the action shots were printed off these actual photos. |

Manny Seoane?
This is just pure desperation on my part, but I found this image in the TV HW series towards the end of the Rs. Any chance he might be Manny Seoane? I've attached an image of one of Manny's minor league cards, previously posted to this forum by bearman14 (#5807). I think I'm clutching at straws - Seoane is one of my personal white whales from 1978.

Manny Seoane 1977
Here's a photo of Manny Seoane while with the Chicago Cubs. It doesn't look to me like the same guy as in the Topps Vault photo above.
