No one will ever mistake this for a GOOD photo, but it's him, and I took it, so feel free

Mike Heath 1978

I know nobody asked for it, but he isn't seen in a lot of Yankee images, and I just wanted to reassure everybody that I was on occasion an ok photog:

So This Is NOT Mike Buskey

Completely my bad. Topps has now put this image up and identified it as Jack Bastable, a career minor league catcher-first baseman who was in camp in 1977.

I will note there's some resemblance (but not enough to have gone with). Bastable is wearing 51, with a mustache. Mike Buskey (a brief 1977 Phillies infielder) is wearing 43, and clean shaven.

Steve Hargan - Rangers request

I am on the lookout for color pic of pitcher Steve Hargan while with the Rangers. I have him in his '75' & '76 Topps versions, and would like to have something for his last season in Texas (1976).

I have this SSPC pic but am looking to better if possible. Thanks in advance!

This is a detail from a J.D. McCarthy image, from my collection:

Outstanding Merkle! Thank you sir!

I was somewhat curious from some of the pics of your own or through SSPC, I am sure you have an anecdotal tale or two on some of the players when photographed.

It would be easy for me to state that Mr Hargan looks surprised in the SSPC pic, but that is coming from someone who wasn't there when it was taken and doesn't factor in all the surrounding activity (i.e. that batting practice was happening yards away, or that a P.R. contact/beat writer/coach was standing just out of view talking or asking a question....)

Just curious if on a day dedicated to pigskins, inflated or otherwise, if you had a quick take on a memorable photo taking process with a player? Understand not offering one either way....cheers!

Rich Coggins 1972

As promised a way back, I have a couple of original production sheets from the SSPC 1976 set and will post some of the clean versions of the images of the more obscure guys, as I 'pull them out' of my scans of the sheets.

Here's Rich Coggins, who was in and out of New York in less than a year after having been obtained five days after the 1975 Yankees' outfield crisis reached its most panicky point and they had started Thurman Munson in left, Kerry Dineen in center, and Rick Dempsey in right.

Always wondered about the McCarthy photos

Merkle, first glad to see you back on the forum! Your insight and images are always appreciated. I love the JD McCarthy images that are on the internet and have always been curious about them. You mentioned you have a collection of his prints/negatives(?) I am a fanatic about posed full body images and he was the master of these. Brace did the same but not nearly as clear and crisp. Are the B&W images in color also or did he do some of both? Did he try to get all of the players that came through Detroit or was it a random selection? I have seen stars and obscure players done by him. From Mickey Mantle to the above posted Steve Hargan. Would love to know more about this important photographer and what is out there of his that many of us have yet to see.

McCarthy

I only had a fraction of his collection - might have been 300 or 400 images/prints. But from what I saw, he shot in black and white until about 1960 and almost exclusively in color thereafter. So since the McCarthy postcards are almost only in B&W, the color images we have are almost always simply prints or proofs.

While 90% of his images are at Tiger Stadium, he also appears to have done a spring training trip nearly every year and often made short trips to Cleveland, Chicago, and Milwaukee. He was probably as prolific as George Brace but never really explored anything commercially beyond making postcards for players. Again and again a file of a particular player would show six or seven images of them, notes about how many they wanted - and a picture of them with him.

The Baseball Hall of Fame photography archive - which is below ground, refrigerated, and has everything from the original Magic Lantern Slides showing Game Action from the 1911 World Series, to the giant imperial team cabinet photos of the 1880's, to stuff shot by fans - has a large McCarthy collection.

Below, one that took me a long time to figure out: Manny Sanguillen, in a Pirates uniform, at County Stadium in Milwaukee, by J.D. McCarthy. Sanguillen had no business being there and neither did McCarthy. Turns out there was a Pirates-Brewers exhibition game there in the mid-70s.

McCarthy also did extensive photography of coaches, trainers, traveling secretaries, broadcasters - the one here is a 1969 Florida image of Joe Deer, who was the assistant trainer of the World Champion Mets.

Thank you for the explanation! Once again very informative. And, bonus, thanks for the Sanguillen! One of my favorites from the 70s. I was fortunate enough to go to the final home series(vs. Cubs) at Three Rivers Stadium and to an alumni dinner they had set up outside stadium. I sat at a table with Nelson Briles and listened to stories of the great early 70s teams and he had all of us laughing at the Manny Sanguillen stories. Especially the trips to the mound where not everyone was speaking the same language. Again thanks for the fast reply and info regarding one of the greatest sports photographers of the 60s and 70s.

I neglected to mention it here but I added a new update for baseball seasons 1956-1973 last week. If you are using my cards, you will want to get them as there have been some great new images carded; some of which were graciously posted here; some from John's Baseball Birthdays; most from TV id'd for me by Keonleafs. Much thanks. Game Front

SSPC Photography

I'm afraid I've got nothing in the way of back stories. The project was kept secret into the late summer and by the time I got involved the photos had all been taken.

Danny Sheaffer Red Sox

A long time ago somebody posted a small (90 x135) snap of the late Danny Sheaffer with the Red Sox here. I found this larger Broder image of him at tradingcarddb.com. I am still looking for him as a Cleveland Indian.
