Thad Bosley, Mariners 1982

Outfielder Thad Bosley spent one season with the Mariners, between stints with the Brewers and the Cubs. Here are two new Topps Vault images.

Steve Brown 1983

I don't know that I've ever seen a major league picture of this huge right-hander from UC-Davis who made cameos with the '83 and '84 Angels - yet there he is in Palm Springs courtesy Topps.

Ray Hathaway (1916-2015)

Ray Hathaway, who pitched for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1945 (his only MLB playing experience) and who managed in the AA Southern League for decades, passed away this week. He was about 98 1/2 years old and Wikipedia listed him as the 3rd oldest major leaguer up until the time of his passing.
Are there any photos out there from his major leagues playing days and his minor league managing career?

Bill Dancy - Phillies coach, Minor leagues Manager

Does anyone have any photos of Bill Dancy (today - age 63). After six years as a player in the Phillies minor league system Dancy got his first minor league managing job in the Phillies system in 1979.
He managed 24 years in the minors, with 20 years in the Phillies system. He was the Chief Coordinator for the Phillies' Spring Training for a number of years and was a major league coach for the Phillies in 2005 and 2006. He also managed in the Braves and Cubs systems and last managed in 2011, guiding a Cubs - AA Southern League team to the playoffs..
He never realized his goal to manage in the majors, but officially compiled a 1668-1543 minor leagues managing record. One season (2001) he replaced a manger for nearly an entire season due to the previous manager's illness. For some strange reason the official record was credited to the manager who took ill and not Dancy. If this had been credited to Dancy his final record would have been
1734-1600, .520 winning percentage.
I have seen this happen once before when Don Zimmer took over managing the Yankees for an extended period of time.due to Joe Torre's illness. The Yankees record during Zimmer's stewardship was credited to Torre. I don't know how you can credit a managing record to someone who is either in the hospital or recuperating at home and is not even at the ballpark. It seems like a dumb rule to me that should be changed.

The difference comes from the title bestowed on the coach by the club when giving him the managerial reins. If they decree him has the INTERIM MGR then the W-L record is all his. If he is the ACTING MGR then it still belongs to the team's Manager. The basis for the differences may be more related to contractual issues or respect for long time managers.

That's Good To Know - A very interesting distinction between Acting and Interim Manager titles. Very Good Info - Thanks!

Possibly Doe Boyland, Pirates 1978-1981

This Pittsburgh Pirate was included in the latest batch of Topps Vault images. I think he could be Dorian (Doe) Boyland, an OF-1B who got twenty-one plate appearances scattered across the 1978, 1979, and 1981 seasons. The number he wears here (44) doesn't match any of the MLB numbers Boyland wore during his call ups, but the face looks like him to me. Any thoughts?

Thanks Merkle, I thought so. Any idea on which year the Topps photos and yours could be from?

Boyland: took that on 9/9/79. Another one of these "photo identification" shortcuts - when you see gray, washed out box seats in the background at Shea Stadium, that's 1979 or earlier. When you see newish red or other-colored box seats in the background, that's 1980 or later.

Can't be certain on the Topps images but it's consistent in terms of lighting (and uniform top/bottom mix) with others from spring training 1980.
