Bob Ferris, California Angels 1980

Bob Ferris was a starting pitcher with a so-so minor league record who got 21 innings with the Angels over the 1979 and 1980 seasons. Some MLB pictures of him have surfaced before, but here are two new 1980 Topps Vault images.

Note the (fairly good) removal of the Topps watermark, particularly on the visible arm.

The number he wears here (44) doesn't match any of the MLB numbers Boyland wore during his call ups, but the face looks like him to me. Any thoughts?
Yeah, that's "Babes In" Boyland. (Okay, Chris Berman probably never got a chance to call him that, but you know he would have.) While Baseball-Reference doesn't list 44 as one of Boyland's uniform numbers, both Wikipedia and Baseball Almanac have him wearing the number in 1979.

Wiki also lists Rick Rhoden as wearing 44 in '79, but that appears to be a mistake. Rhoden only made one appearance for the "We Are Fa-MUH-Lee" World Champions, spending almost the entire season in the minors (despite having pitched in post-season for the Dodgers the previous two years) and, per B-R, wore #41 for that single start.

I would assume that the Bradenton pics are from Spring Training 1980, with Boyland about to lose his spot on the team and have Rhoden take his number.

Wartime MLB Recruits - Hamner & Caballero

Wartime manpower shortages occasionally forced teams to look for players who were too young to be drafted. The Phillies debuted two players who were right out of high
school - shortstop, Granville "Granny" Hamner (left) and second baseman Ralph "Putsy" Caballero on Sept. 14, 1944. Hamner was 17 years and 4 months old and Caballero was
16 years, 10 months old at the time of their major league debuts. Both went into the military in 1945. Hamner was with the Phillies through 1959, made three all-star teams
(1952-1954), and became the Phillies captain. He fooled around with a knuckleball and was used as relief pitcher in 7 MLB games. In games where he didn't pitch he had 1,528
hits in 1,524 games. He died at 66 in 1993. Caballero, at 87, is one of the oldest living Phillies. He was a utility infielder who was out of the majors by 1952. His New Orleans
home was destroyed by Hurricaine Katrina. He and his family have rebuilt and remained in New Orleans. - He is a survivor.
The Phillies also recruited high school pitcher, Rogers Mc Kee during WWII. I believe he still holds the record for youngest pitcher to get a win in the majors. He won one of his
first outings for the Phillies at 16 years, 11 months of age in 1943. Mc Kee passed away in his native North Carolina in September 2014, two weeks shy of his 88th birthday. For
photos of him see page 615, section 12300 of this thread.

Dick Allen 1969 Season

Dick Allen often drew words into the dirt at first base with his spikes during the 1969 season, and wore a helmet to protect him from heckling fans...

Dan Graham 1979

I don't see him on "wanted lists" but since I stumbled over this in the pile of prints of my photos from 1979, I thought I should post him.

Although Dan Graham spent 1980 as the left-handed part of Earl Weaver's catching platoon with the Orioles, he debuted the year before with the Twins and played just two games on consecutive days in Boston in June as PH and DH. He had been with the Twins in New York the previous day (June 7) when I took this:

I remember him. He had the one good platoon year with the Orioles, fell off the earth in '81. He could hit some, but he was a converted 3B who never quite mastered the art of catching. Earl Weaver said "Danny couldn't catch his own butt with both hands."

Pete Broberg 1971

Topps goes in to the vault and pulls out - the images of Broberg in spring training with the Mariners in 1977, and not the elusive images of him with the '77 Cubs.

From this, sadly, we can infer that they never shot him in a Chicago uniform. For if they had, he would've been depicted with such a photo on his 1978 card and not one of these '77 Seattle images airbrushed to within an inch of its life.

Al Schmelz

My great white whale as a Mets collector. Posting because a) I bought this snapshot and hope it might be of use to someone and b) I'm the guy who as a Photoshop rookie afflicted the world with the "Frankenschmelz" photo created from a yearbook. (Sorry.)

Anyway. Loved the press photo Merkle found a while back. One day a decent color portrait of Al will turn up. Until then....

Marshall Bridges 1959

Tough to find largely because despite six decent years in the majors and appearances with two World Series teams, Topps never made a card of him - it appears he may have signed an exclusive contract with their then-rival Fleer.

But as today's Vault offerings confirm, Topps photographed him extensively - shoots with the Cards, Reds, Yankees, Senators. This is the first one they've posted - dates to 1959.
