The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired High-A left-handed relief pitcher Wes Mendes from the Houston Astros in exchange for major-league outfielder Max Williams and AAA right-hander Kyle Scott.
A fifth-round pick in the 2026 draft by the Astros, the 25-year-old Scott has spent the first month of the 2030 season at High-A Ashville, where he has earned two saves in eight appearances and a 0.00 ERA over 8.1 innings.
Mendes, who rates as a closer, has pitched at four different levels for Houston including a stint in the majors in 2029.
He worked in 61 games for the Astros last season, going 7-6 with four saves and a 4.46 ERA.
Mendes will be assigned to AAA Memphis.
The 25-year-old Williams broke camp with the Cardinals this season, but struggled failing to get a hit in 10 at bats.
He has made appearances with the Cardinals each of the past three seasons, during which he has hit .149 with three home runs and nine RBIS in 20 games/11 starts.
Williams came to the Cardinal as an eighth-round pick in the 2025 draft.
A sixth-round pick in the 2023 draft, Scott has yet to appear in the majors.
The 29-year-old has been at Memphis the past two seasons going a combined 0-11 with 12 saves and a 9.18 ERA.

The St. Louis Cardinals have placed outfielder Jung-Hoo Lee on the 10-day injured list after he suffered a strained hamstring during a 9-6 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on May 4.
Lee, 31, has batted .238 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 26 games/25 starts.
He is expected to miss up to five weeks.
Outfielder Vitalie Rastelli will be recalled to AAA Memphis just one day after he had been returned to the minors.
Rastelli, 21, struggled in his first callup to the majors hitting just .088 with two RBIs in 10 games.
At AAA this season, he has played 16 games and lit it up hitting .379 with four homers and 10 RBIs.
