Request for Merkle - 1977 proofs

Under the heading of "it worked for others on this site, hopefully you can assist me."

Merkle, I was curious if you would be willing to re-scan as clean an image as possible of the Dan Meyer and Dick Pole proofs. Short of someone having the original Topps image (much like the Duncan image appearing on the T.V. folders), I am looking for the pictures that were used for both players. Hopefully a quality scan from you like the recent one for Bill Singer will do the trick.

Thank you in advance!!

Your original post of the proofs:

Is This Urbano Lugo's Father?

(To answer previous: I'll try to post the Meyer and Pole proofs tonight or tomorrow)

Two very unexpected images in the latest Topps Vault upload. Am I crazy, or is this Urbano Lugo (Senior), a star pitcher in Venezuela in the '60s and '70s whose son of the same name pitched for the Angels in the late '80s?

There are two images of this pitcher in White Sox garb, presumably from the 1973-1976 era (all the Sox from Spring Training 1972 are shown in home uniforms), but I can't find anything suggesting he was actually a Chicago invitee. On the other hand, the only pitcher in the White Sox system in 1970-76 who fits the alphabetical sequence of the latest upload is future scout and exec Mitch Lukevics and this is NOT Mitch Lukevics.

Attached is a 1970 Venezuelan card of him. The eyebrows give it away, right?

In that uniform, one of the Great White Whales. Eight games with the '76 Cherubs before heading to Seattle in the expansion draft.

I'm curious if you have a list of your Great White Whales. I'd ask the same question of everybody, in fact -- I imagine the answer would vary based on team allegiance, the scope of baseball history one's interested in, etc. Mine are all Mets, but someone else finding one of theirs still makes me want to give a little cheer.

Hey there, it's a good question and I'll try and keep this to 2-3 per year.

Color images that are preferably Topps Vault (non SSPC for the mid 70s years), but will certainly take others if in some quality, and in the applicable uni:

1978 Tom Bruno-Stl, Don Werner-Cin, Mike Fischlin-Hou
1977 Tom Underwood- Stl, Woodie Fryman-Cin, Pete Broberg-ChiC
1976 Fred Scherman-Mon, Ruppert Jones-KC, Lerrin LaGrow - Stl
1975 Sonny Siebert & Jim Perry-Oak
1973 Fran Healy & Ken Wright-KC, Mike Caldwell-SD
1972 Eddie Leon-Cle, Pat Corrales-SD (banana unis), Cecil Upshaw-Atl
1971 Roy Foster-Cle, Hal Haydel- Min
1970 Jack Hiatt-ChiC, Tony Horton-Cle
1969 Vern Geishert-Cal, Ray Washburn-Stl

I am once again looking for some 80's players, Mets in this case. The Metropolitans made a uniform change in '82, making it hard to find certain guys in one outfit or the other.

I am looking for the following players in the 1978-81 uniform:
1. Ed Lynch
2. Scott Holman

I am looking for the following players in the 1982 uniform:
1. Joel Youngblood (prior to his trade late that season to Montreal)
2. Tom Hausman (prior to his trade late that season to Atlanta)
3. Phil Mankowski (got into a few games that year--all the Mets pictures I have seen so far show him in the earlier uniform)
4. Tom Gorman (if it is DEFINITELY from the '82 or '83 seasons)
5. Ronn Reynolds (if it is DEFINITELY from the '82 season, his debut year)

Photos that have not appeared in major card issues are what I am looking for. Thanks a lot as always, guys.

[PS: Walt Terrell should be added, if the shot is DEFINITELY from the '82 or '83 seasons. Thanks.]

Does Merkle's pic work for an '82 home uni for Phil?

That is a great shot and I do have it, but it is from Phil's '80 stint with the club. You can see the round Mets logo on Phil's left shoulder, and also on the left shoulder of the guy standing behind the batting cage.

Scott Holman 1980

Took this one myself. And, in 1980.

Atlanta braves whales

The Braves were, of course, largely horrible the entire decade of the 70s, but many of the obscure big leaguers (LaCorte, Collins, Autry) are starting to see the light of day. These haven't. Not looking exclusively for Topps Vault, but want big league color images that aren't airbrushed Richmond or colorized:

1968: Angel (Remy) Hermoso (not called Remy in Atlanta)
1970: Aubrey Gatewood
1973: Wenty Ford (the ultimate quest)
1977: Duane Theiss (color), Mike Marshall (didn't even pose for yearbook)
1978: Hank Small (Atlanta born, one game)
1981: Matt Sinatro
1981-82: Bob Porter
1985: Dave Schuler

Also seeking Tommy Davis in Angels' uniform (1976)
Also ghost MLB player Davis (or Dave) May, Twins 1976-78

White Whales and Unicorns

I still need many images from 1978, but will limit my post here to only those which seem particularly difficult - my Unicorns, as it were. I'll also try not to re-list players already listed by others in response to this post. My interest is in 1978, and I would prefer color images of the player from 1978. However, if I can get an image of the player taken in another year, but in a uniform style used in 1978, I can probably use it.

Here we go:
Red Sox - John Larose (A true Unicorn; I've only ever seen 3 photos of him, and one of those was with the senior league. His ML career consisted of a single relief appearance on September 20 - he threw 2 innings and gave up 5 earned runs).
Indians: Al Fitzmorris
Brewers: Tim Johnson, Ed Farmer
Royals: Steve Foucault, Randy Bass
A's: Tito Fuentes, Scott Meyer
Rangers: Greg Mahlberg
Expos: Gerry Pirtle
Phillies: Horacio Pina
Cardinals: Rob Dressler
Pirates: Clarence Gaston
Reds: Dan Dumoulin
Astros: Dan Warthen, Keith Drumright
Dodgers: Myron White
Padres: Tony Castillo, Dave Wehrmeister, Mark Wiley

Would it be possible to create some sort of index of needed player images by year and team, so that all of us could provide our want lists once? It could be shortened by not allowing duplicates (no 2 1978 John Laroses) because a single positive response could help many people.
Just curious.

Again, thanks to all who make this forum such an invaluable source of information and images.

Here is a Brace T. Davis. Can use some cleaning up, but hopefully useful.

John LaRose 1978

A unicorn?

He's in the Red Sox 1979 yearbook (it isn't a 1978 hat, but such is life). To me, a unicorn is a guy not shown at all, or not shown with a given team, or not in color.

Greg Brummett 1993

I was back around page 515 or so and saw a post about this one-year pitcher (my photography interest drops off sharply after 1988) and coincidentally an image of him pops up in a collection I obtained.

Don't know the photographer nor the origin, but here he is, evidently at Spring Training 1994 (since he'd opened '93 with the Giants).
