Craig counsell's Highly Unorthodox batting stance.

Craig Counsel, who was just appointed as the Milwaukee Brewers' new manager, had one of the most unusual batting stances most of us have ever seen. (He actually didn't do too badly with that weird stance - getting over 1200 hits, hitting .255, lasting in the major leagues for 17 years and playing his final MLB game at age 41.)

Does anyone have photos of Counsell's highly unusual stance?. Counsell's stance at the plate was once described as "The last stance in the world a parent or coach would want to teach to their Little Leaguer".

Whither Topps Vault Action Shots?

A question for those who might know - with all the action shots in Topps sets beginning in 1971 (and all the action images they must have taken and not used), why is it that there doesn't seem to be any included in 99% of the TV releases? Once I heard someone ask this question, it suddenly dawned on me that it really does seem odd. The only action shots you do see seem to be exclusively from the late 90s or so.

Thanks to anyone who might be able to help shed some light...

Merkle can probably give you a more complete and accurate response. However... My understanding is that the early action shots from the 70s were Polaroids. The Vault has sold lots of these, actually, though I assume fewer of those were taken and/or still exist than the negatives/transparencies of the same era. Looking at the card sets of the eighties, its clear to me that many of the action shots were taken by professional photographers (guys who worked for SI and like publications and free lancers). While Topps purchased the rights to use these photographs, I seriously doubt they purchased the full ownership rights (which were likely retained by the photogs). (Aside: one of the best card blogs out there--Night Owl--recently did a piece about Topps cards featuring the work of Ronald C. Modra). That trend may very well have continued--virtually uninterrupted--to the present.

When Topps Vault offers the action shots they do--be they Polaroids or the late 90s super star stuff you do see, I, for one, generally skip right past them as they do nothing for my head. I prefer and have always preferred the posed shots I grew up with (just one reason I prefer Heritage to Topps flagship). I suspect a lot of image collectors may feel similarly. Which is to say, the Vault probably offers more action images than are ever called to anyone's attention in this little corner of the hobby.

Does anyone have any color poses of Jim Hickman batting as a Dodger? Seen a few 8x10s that have him standing or kneeling, but I dearly would like to see the unaltered image that is on his 1969 Topps card, but something close would be what the doctor ordered.

p.s. Thread Search engine turned up more more Jesse Hickman than Jim.

Well, the difficulty, you see, is that the "unaltered" image no longer exists. When Topps airbrushed a player's cap or uni, they did so on the actual image.

But, FWIW, here's the Topps Vault image of the picture you're talking about (or one very close to it). It's the only Jim Hickman Dodgers image I can find in my Vault collection.

Craig Anderson 1961

As always, I'm way behind on Topps Vault downloading/IDing, but here's a few things I've run across lately that haven't been posted in the thread. As usual, I tried to color-correct where needed, although others may do a better job.

Original Met Craig Anderson with the team that didn't keep him, the '61 Cardinals. (We only had him in BW, before.)

And as an Amazin', albeit hatlessly, probably the next season. (There was one MLB color photo I saw before, but this is better for the face, IMO.)

Bill James notes that Anderson was one of the first pitchers ever explicitly groomed to be a reliever, rather than a starter. Of course the Mets put him in the rotation anyway (better him than Vinegar Bend Mizell or Roadblock Jones), and he got off to a 3-1 start…and then an 0-18 finish. Ouch.

(And yes, the colors still aren't right in either pic. But they're better than how TV had them. So it's a start.)

Norm Angelini 1972

Only ever seen a Chicago pic of Norm in color, before. The Yankee Stadium shot was terrible in the pack, but corrected nicely enough, IMO.

Mike Strahler 1970 alternate uni CAL

Passing through Angels camp in 1973, Mike (who came over in the F.Robby-for-Messersmith deal) doesn't make the team and is swapped to Detroit before the end of April. But here he is in Halos togs, in case you ever wanted to see him in them. Or even if you didn't.

Jim Strickland 1971 new uniform design 1972

We've seen Jim in the 1971 original-style Twins pinstripes, and in the 1973 blue double-knits. But the 1972-only gray road double-knits always seem to be in demand, so here's a couple shots of Jim in those.

Ray Dobens 1929

This looks like this could be a 1929 Red Sox uniform, but at any rate, it's a better photo of Dobens than I've seen previously. It's from Gary Bedingfield's Baseball In Wartime newsletter.
