Jim Adduci Sr. Phillies 1989

Jim Adduci Sr. apparently is less well known than his son but for about four years (1982-1986) he wasn't a bad hitter, consistently posting .800+ OPS in the minors. Despite this, the Cards and Brewers only took brief peeks at him. By 1989, he was 30 years old and not the hitter he had been just a few years before. He got into a few games with the Phillies and Tastykake did a card of him for that year's team set. I had never seen a copy of it, but kylessportcards just posted one on ebay. Here it is.

I still haven't seen Adduci as a Cardinal, though...

Need to see a good closeup of Morton to see if he has a similar mole on his neck. The eyebrows are allwrong also. Guess he could have had work done.

Athletic at the 1960 All-Star Game

Any thoughts on the Athletic at left?

Bud Daley (far right) was the only KC Athletics player chosen for either 1960 all-star game. The Athletic on the left has me stumped.

1960 asg

The 1st ASG in 1960 was played in Kansas City, so perhaps KC provided some local help warming up pitchers and such. The gent in question has a catchers mitt. He looks a fair bit like Harry Chiti, who split the year between KC and Detroit (he was with KC at the time of the ASG). Thoughts?

Oh, Ok, "He had work done."

To celebrate switching to pitching, I suppose?

Mole removed, eyebrows reshaped, hair and facial hair dyed red, and freckle implants? But nothing done on one oddly shaped tooth?

Chiti

Thanks for that - I had a feeling it might be him. The eyebrows and arms confirmed it.

Merkle,

Since you apparently have the 1966 Braves spring roster, could you share it with us? So we could check out who might have been wearing Carl Morton's uniform on that day? Perhaps after Carl was sent out to work on pitching (do we know when that was? Do we know when the other cuts happened and who they were? the chronology could be of help here), or perhaps just as a once-off, for whatever reason.

And again, I'd be glad to check for possible matches, but knowing if Mystery 50 was a RHB or LHB would greatly help to cut down the work. Thanks.

The Final Link (Folder EL)

This Red Sox player is the final player (EL154) needing to be ID'd in Folder EL. Now, he follows Bill Monboquette in the numbering, but Mombo is a righty and this guy definitely signing (or pretending to sign) with his lefty hand. He looks enough like him, and I can find no alphabetical minor leaguer that would fall here between Mombo and EL155, Bobby Morgan.

Again, I marvel at everyone's devotion to research to this end. Thanks.

Pretty darn sure (99.9%) that's Monbo.

Here ya go. From the SABR bio:
Quote:
He was 5-feet-11, weighed 190 pounds, and a right-hander—though, oddly, he wrote and performed all other functions left-handed.

Not unheard of; as I'm sure Jack knows, Cleon Jones was a natural lefty, but played in his youth in a park with a very short RF fence where the ground rule was that a ball hit over the fence was an out (to save baseballs, I guess), and so learned to bat RH instead. Brooks Robinson was naturally left-handed, but his dad had played 2B in semi-pro ball, and taught Brooks to throw righty, so he could play infield, too.

Norman Rockwell did a painting of Brooks signing autographs lefty, one-time:

People wrote Rockwell, "correcting" his "mistake". Nope.

My father was a natural southpaw. But, where and when he went to school, that wasn't "allowed" and they forced him to write right-handed. That's the way he learned to write, so he pretty much always wrote right-handed the rest of his life, but he did everything else (including pitch for the company team) lefty.

Lefty/Righty

I write lefty, but throw righty - glad to know I share this in common with one of my favorite Sox!

Folder gc getting close

After nailing that Orioles assortment, I'm optimisitc we're on a roll. Here are some the final images left to be ID'd in the mammoth Folder GC. They are, except for one, in the same cluster.

First, two more Orioles. First one GC 906 in a seemingly random assortment

Size: 109.8 KB

This is part of a group 925, following Dallas Williams

Size: 68.6 KB

Now, a couple of Angels: GC 928-929 :

Size: 28.0 KB

This follows at GC 930-931:

Size: 37.7 KB

Finally, a random Expos. Tried Jerry White on for size, but not sure; GC933:

Size: 65.5 KB

Finally, we badly need someone with some tech skill to put Folder GC into a Zip file in case Topps deletes this folder sometime down the road.

This thread is the best!

Could This be Manny Trillo?

Never seen a photo of him with a 'stache, but we're at a loss on this one otherwise. He's GC 949.
