Hebner

Well, clearly the Pirates did wear Bellboy stripes on the pants, at least experimentally, in the mid '70s. That's a standard Topps shoot at Candlestick Park by Doug McWilliams.

Hebner doesn't seem to still have that aging-but-still-somewhat-boyish face that you see in photos taken in 1971 and 1972 (see his '73 Topps card if you're not clear what I'm talking about). If there's no Clemente number or NL Centennial patch on the other sleeve, that means the photo - and the pants stripes - dates to 1974 or 1975.

Nice catch.

New Card Update Uploaded

Greetings,

A new baseball card update has been uploaded with 529 new cards. In addition to uploading the new update file, I also updated new seasonal files for all 18 seasons (1956-1973). Thus, if you download the seasons you want, you will not need the update; all of the new cards will already be included in their respective seasons. I also updated the master Manager file and the master ballpark file. Please note; if you choose to download the update and then copy and paste them to previous season folders you downloaded, you will end up losing some cards because some files have been renamed.

In all, there are now 39,475 cards included in the 18 seasons. Thanks goes out to Guy for painstakingly identifying all the TV images, to Mark for his high quality colorizations, Osprey for his great ballpark images at APC forum. Other thanks goes out to John at Baseball Birthdays and to Scott and all the guys at OOTP who contribute images for the community.

Game Front

Jeff

Yeah, Topps got that wrong. It's Jim Barbieri, not Barberie.

Jim Barbieri

Priceless trivia. When Barbieri pinch-hit for Joe Moeller in Game One of the 1966 World Series he accomplished a unique double-play. In 1954, at the age of 13, he had thrown out the ceremonial first pitch before Game One of that World Series. Barbieri had starred for the Schenectady, New York team that won the 1954 Little League World Series.

For what it's worth, this other image Topps posted to eBay along with the one above, was part of a group of AAA players shot in camp in 1969. You'll notice they're wearing very sad looking Dodger caps but Spokane Indians uniforms. Others included Cleo James and Dick McLaughlin.

Lastly, Topps Vault was evidently confused by the images of another player they posted, Ed Barberie, a career minor league White Sox catcher (father of ex-MLB infielder Bret Barberie and thus former father-in-law of NFL weather-whateverer Gillian Barberie). See the Minor League thread for images and details.

We love a mystery

Several veterans of this thread agree that this photo portrays former Giants and Twins pitcher Don Carrithers. That's where it fits in Folder GB. But no one (yet) has been able to produce any article or documentation that puts Carrithers in the Cubs camp in 1980 or any other year. And they include Baseball Reference, Baseball Cube, Wiki, etc.
So when, exactly did this aborted comeback play out?

Just two, please

I've promised not to choke this board with hard-to-ID images as we go through the Topps Vault folders, but these are the final two images we need ID's to finish off the massive GA folder.

This Tiger was followed by a number of "S" folks, starting with Dick Sisler.

Don't know why we've had such trouble with Orioles, but this one is nestled between Willie Smith and Russ Snyder.

Thanks to all. Promise no more for at least a week.

Facepack Update Released

I have completed and uploaded the 2015 mid-season release of the Facepack. This version includes 890 new photos:

707 new player photos, including 122 new 2015 player debuts
13 new manager photos, including 4 new 2015 manager debut
158 new coach photos, including 7 new 2015 coach debuts
12 new umpire photos

Since the last Facepack release in October, six formerly-missing players, one formerly-missing manager and five formerly-missing umpires have been found. I have also corrected 21 player ID errors and one manager ID error. I renamed four player photos to remain consistent with SABR and Baseball-Reference.com.

You can see additional details about this release, along with download links, on my Facepack page.

If you use and enjoy the Facepack, please consider making a small donation to help me justify all the time I spend tracking down baseball photos to my family. There is also a direct PayPal link on my Facepack page.

Check out Fred Norman's '70 Topps card. Must've been from the same session. You mean Topps couldn't have airbrushed out the edges??

Brewers, Red Sox, Mariners, Cardinals and Rangers.

The Rangers image is from Baseball Birthdays. I suspect there might be a few Tony Fossas images elsewhere on this site (and/or in this thread), too, so give the "Search" engine a whirl.

Bob Snyder

The Orioles' lefthander above is Bob Snyder, journeyman minor league reliever, in spring training 1974 or 1975. And as mentioned previously, the Tiger is Chuck Seelbach, who was around long enough to appear on Topps cards in 1973 and 1974.

Randy Scarbery

Drafted by the A's, played for the White Sox in '79 and '80. We had some A's images in the HK series. A few more, now. But also, finally, the Sawks.
