Promise to take a break from this, but I had also promised someone I would do what I could to get IDs the Skrable images. Folder AT is done!
Just realized Vault has released Matt Sinatro, another Brave on the short list. These are amazing times for we old(er)-time collectors.
Again, humble thanks for allow me to co-op so much of this thread of late. To some these IDs are a nuisance, to some it's a game, but to me it's merely been a project I want to do well.

Hal W. Smith 1955

The 1960 World Series hero finished his career with the 1964 Reds. We didn't really have anything before (his 1964 Topps card is a BHNH from his Colt .45 days), so these two are nice:

(These were very red in the file; I can't use Paint to "balance" the image as tnfoto does, since I'm on a Mac, so I'm afraid my corrections are a little too blue. Anyone who can improve, please do.)

And all we really had from Smith's days with the .45s was the oblique-angled shot on his 1963 Topps card, so I'm glad of these, as well.

(Again, corrected as best I can.)

Bobby Sprowl 1978

MODERATOR NOTE: The player pictured below is not Sprowl, it is actually career minor leaguer Jerry [sic] Spencer. Thanks to keonleafs and Merkle923 for confirming the ID.

Yeah, yeah, Sox fans may twitch at the name, but we deserve something better than the faraway infield practice shot that is all we had of Sprowl in color in a Boston uni, so I'm grateful to the vault for these posed shots.

From Spring Training 1977 (note the 1975-1976 sleeve patch):

Attachment 408482Attachment 408483

By the bye, in doing a little research, I came to the conclusion that the pillorying that Don Zimmer took over the decision to pitch Sprowl may have been somewhat unjust. The current Wikipedia article, which I quote below, is largely my work. (Pretty much all I left in from the previous version was the "wah, wah, Zim should have started Bill Lee or Luis Tiant" line, which I then proceed to rebut.)

Quote:
Sprowl's first start was in Baltimore on September 5, where he went seven innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks, but took the loss when Orioles ace (and future Hall-of-Famer) Jim Palmer stifled the Red Sox, who got a second-inning run on a Dwight Evans RBI double, and then nothing more. Sprowl carried the 1-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh, having allowed only two hits to that point, but then surrendered a game-tying home run to Lee May. It was alleged that if Boston left-fielder Jim Rice had not turned the wrong way, he could have caught May's hit, which barely cleared a seven-foot fence in left field. Instead he lunged at the last minute and knocked the ball into the bullpen. Andres Mora then grounded through the legs of Red Sox third baseman Butch Hobson, reaching second base. (This was Hobson's second error of the game and 35th of the season.). Sprowl retired Rick Dempsey on a grounder to shortstop, as pinch-runner Mike Dimmel advanced to third, and then with the infield playing in, Carlos Lopez hit a soft liner that didn't even reach the outfield on the fly, but dropped for a hit and allowed Dimmel to score the eventual winning run. (Sprowl retired the next two batters to end the inning, but gave up a hit and a walk to start the bottom of the eighth, and those runners eventually scored when relief pitcher Dick Drago allowed a two-out, two-strike pinch-hit double by Terry Crowley, providing Baltimore an insurance margin. Zimmer had told Drago to pitch around Crowley ["It doesn't matter if you walk Crowley. We can still work to Dempsey."], but was ignored.)[4]

The Red Sox players lauded Sprowl's effort ("The kid only threw three or four bad pitches all night," said catcher Carlton Fisk, "but he kept apologizing to me.") and Zimmer decided to give him a second start. His second start was on September 10 against the New York Yankees, in the fourth game of a four-game series at Fenway Park, after the Yankees had already defeated Mike Torrez, Jim Wright, and Dennis Eckersley to draw within one game of Boston. Zimmer passed over veterans Bill "Spaceman" Lee and Luis Tiant, who had dominated the Yankees during their careers. (Lee, for example, won 12 out of 17 decisions against the Yankees in 10 years with Boston. Then again, Lee had been pulled from the rotation after losing his last seven starts, had barely pitched since then because he had publicly feuded with Zimmer, and it's arguable that what Lee did against the Yankees in 1969 didn't have much relevance in 1978. The 37-year-old Tiant had thrown a two-hit shutout in Baltimore the night after Sprowl's start, and would have been working on three days' rest had Zimmer chosen to advance him in the rotation.) Sprowl walked the first two batters, got Thurman Munson to hit into a double play, but was unable to retire Reggie Jackson and escape the inning, surrendering an RBI single. He then walked Lou Piniella and Chris Chambliss and was pulled. (Reliever Bob Stanley allowed a hit to drive in two more runs, which were charged to Sprowl, before finishing the inning.) The Yankees won the game, 7-4 (although Jack Brohamer came close to a tying 3-run home run in the 9th), tying Boston for the the division lead, and subjecting Zimmer to much second-guessing, due to Sprowl's perceived "nerves".

Tiant started the next night against Baltimore and took a 4-1 lead into the 8th before tiring and surrendering three straight hits to open the frame; Stanley allowed the tying run, but no more, and the Red Sox scored in the bottom of the 8th to win the game and briefly reclaim first place, as the Yankees were idle. However, the Red Sox then lost their next three games (two in Cleveland to the lowly Indians) and were 1.5 games behind the Yankees when they arrived in New York on September 15th, which would have been Sprowl's next start. Perhaps due to previous criticism, Zimmer this time opted to bypass Sprowl and start Tiant on short rest; Tiant lasted only 3.2 innings and allowed all four runs in the Red Sox' 4-0 defeat. Sprowl was not used at all against the Yankees that weekend (Torrez and Eckersley started, both likewise on three days' rest, and pitched well), but started the Monday (September 18) game in Detroit. He allowed three runs in 5 innings, leaving with a 4-3 lead. (Stanley blew the save in the eighth, but Boston won it in the 11th.)

This would be Sprowl's last start of the season, as Zimmer went with a four-man rotation of Tiant, Torrez, Eckersley, and Stanley for the final two weeks. (Torrez and Eckersley continued to pitch well on short rest; Tiant was knocked out four batters into the September 19 game at Detroit [which Boston rallied to win], but was more effective thereafter; perhaps only pitching 3.2 innings on the 15th and to just four batters on the 19th enabled him to be essentially well-rested for his three remaining starts. [Stanley was 1-1 in his two starts.])
So one start where he got screwed by his defense, one start where Zimmer didn't give him a chance to get Graig Nettles while down 1-0 and with two out in the 1st (Sprowl allowed only the hit to Jackson; Boston relievers allowed 17 more, starting with the one Nettles smacked off Stanley), and one where he pitched okay, but had Bob Stanley blow the lead. Not really that hideous…and probably better than Bill Lee would have done.

Great story, but sorry to report that Bobby Sprowl was a Lefthander! In fact, this righthander does not have the same looks as Sprowl. By the alphabetical suite in that GS folder, I think it would be Jerry Spencer, a career minor leaguer for the Red Sox, 1970-76, but.... I can't find any picture of him...If someone would have one, please post it.

Hmmm....Detective keonleafs on the case! SI has this LH marked as Bobby Sprowl while taking infield. Even with the 'Sprowl scowl' it doesn't look like the same fella from above.... good catch!

And even described as such in the stories I was researching. Holy facepalm, Batman!

If I was half as clever as I thought I was, I'd still be twice as clever as I actually am. Blech.

It's definitely Jerry Spencer

Have a shot of him from a Red Sox yearbook, and I believe I also have a shot of Sprowl I took when he was in Houston. I'll post them this evening.

Can you please delete or edit the erroneous ID post? Stuff like this tends to become indelibly stuck on the Internet and google images for Sprowl will soon produce those pictures of Spencer.

Gerry Spencer and Bob Sprowl 1978

Here are, in order, the shot of Gerry (with a "G," not a "J") Spencer from the 1976 Red Sox yearbook (their cropping) and one of the Topps Vault images of Spencer.

Tthe date is 1976, not 1977 - the Red Sox wore that patch off-and-on from mid-season 1975 onwards into 1976 and definitely were shown wearing it in 1976 Spring Training images shot by Topps. This is verified by the fact that two of the players displaying the patches, Deron Johnson and Gene Michael, each attended only one Boston camp: 1976.

Below is a shot I took of Sprowl at Shea Stadium in 1980. Feel free to use as needed. Clearly his appearance on a 1981 Topps rookie card confirms they photographed him in a Houston uniform, but I don't recall seeing any Topps Sprowl images turn up in either Boston or Houston garb. For that matter, I'm pretty sure I looked for him during my extended research into the original files and he did not have a folder.

This underscores the point that my estimate of at least a million images may be wildly conservative. In addition to the filing cabinets there were uncounted boxes full of unsorted negatives, many of which have been auctioned off by Topps and have been total surprises to me when they've appeared.

Anyway. Gerry Spencer (Boston), and Bobby Sprowl (Houston):
