John Mickey
John Baptist Mickey was an outfielder and pitcher in the Negro Leagues. He played for the 1897 Cuban Giants, 1898 Celeron Acme Colored Giants, and 1907 Philadelphia Giants. Maybe there are enough markings in this photo for someone to identify this uniform, but I can't.

Eugene Moore
Eugene "Deerfoot" Moore was an outfielder for numerous Negro League teams. During the 1909-21 period, he was with the Birmingham Giants, West Baden Sprudels, St. Louis Giants, French Lick Plutos, Indianapolis ABCs, Louisville White Sox, Chicago Black Sox, Jewell's ABCs of Indianapolis, and Detroit Stars. The Negro Baseball Register, by Clark and Lester, lists this player as L. Moore.
By the way, at one point I speculated that Clark and Lester had gotten some of their information from James Riley's encyclopedia. I was drawing that conclusion simply from the publication dates of the encyclopedia and THE NEGRO LEAGUES book which presented the Clark/Lester Negro Baseball Register. In recent correspondence with Larry Lester, he corrected me, and indicated it was the other way around. James Riley got information from the Negro Baseball Register data base. Indeed, in the acknowledgements section of Riley's encyclopedia, he gives special thanks to Dick Clark for roster continuity information. |

Leonard Griffin
Leonard Griffin, SS/P, is shown in the uniform of the Indianapolis ABCs. I was a little hesitant to post this image, because it is such an awful caricature of Leonard, but it is a valid image of the times, and the only image I've seen of him. The original image was in a periodical called Freeman dated June 5, 1909. It was reproduced in a 1997 book by the name of THE INDIANAPOLIS ABCs, by Paul Debono.
A second image of Griffin from the Freeman is added on the right, this one coming from the issue of September 6, 1907. It was part of a cartoon depicting an incident in which Rube Foster of the Chicago Leland Giants had conned Griffin into tossing a live ball to him while runners were on base. Foster simply stepped aside instead of catching the ball, so the runners scored while the ball rolled to the dugout. In response to the comment following the original posting about the artist being a racist, before making such an assessment, one should be aware the artist involved in drawing the first image was an Afro-American and the Indianapolis Freeman was an Afro-American newspaper. I don't know who drew the second image -- might be the same artist. Last edited by Cusick; 02-08-2019 at 07:58 AM. Reason: Add an image. |

Babe Herron and W. Higbee
On page 128 of this thread, I posted photos of Herron and Higbee, and speculated that the uniforms might have been associated with the Indianapolis ABCs. I can now confirm that those shots came from team photos of the 1911 Indianapolis ABCs. The same holds true for the photo of Ambrose Morris on this page -- also 1911 Indianapolis ABCs.
