Craig Mitchell 1975

Sure, Paul, John and Charlie Mitchell are all well and good, but what about Craig, who made one appearance for the 1975 A's, one in 1976 and then in '77 (with the big stars gone) got in a whopping three and was never seen again? He did make not one but two Topps "Rookie Stars" quarter-panel appearances (one in 1978 after his major-league career was over), but these are the first full-size pics I've seen of him.

Brightened to avoid facial-shadow issues, and with the second one flipped to fix a reversed negative.

Paul Mitchell 1975

We do have a fair amount of spring-training pics of Mitchell with his original team, but these are the first stadium shots I've seen. Taken in Oakland, where he'd be traded (as part of the Reggie/Holtzman for Baylor/Torrez swap) after the season.

Brad Mills 1980

After coming over in a minor league deal the year before, Mills looks terrified at Astros camp in 1985. (To be fair, he looks terrified in a lot of pics.) Is it because he realizes he won't make the team, because he knows his major-league career is over…or because he can foresee the awful 171-274 record he will put up as manager of this club from 2010-2012?

Dave Kingman 1971

We've only had one color Kingman during his San Diego stay (still better than his AL stops in 1977), but here's another. It's the picture Topps airbrushed into a Cubs pic for the 1978 Hostess set.

Sky King looks happy to be out of NY, huh? Sigh.

A Brief Moment in the Bigs

At age 22 Bob Daughters made his one and only game appearance at Fenway Park, April 24, 1937, as a pinch runner for Hall of Fame catcher Rick Ferrell. He was doubled home by Buster Mills in a 6 to 5 loss to the New York Yankees.

Dave Kingman

Found that there is a Dave Kingman website (who knew? The Dave Kingman Web Site ) , on which I found these photos, which I thought I'd post because of the difficulty locating images of him with some of his 1977 teams:

Randy Miller, Expos 1978

A nice and rare TV pic of Miller ...5 games, 7 IP and ERA...10.24...all in 1978. Previously, I had only a minor league card (Denver Bears) acceptable image for him.

Dave Oliver, Indians 1978

Only a 7 games career, all in 1977 with the Indians, (can't correct my error in the title). Still, a nice .318 BA !!

The Folder we are currently ID'ing, Folder BE, had a dozen images of Kingman, including the Padres shot Amazin69 posted a page or two ago. But there were no Angels or Yankees. Couple of A's shots, bunch of Giants.

And speaking of Giants, there were four images of this mystery man. Didn't the Giants have some sort of Far East exchange program for a spring or two?

Toru Hamaura 1971-72 (minors)

Just because you don't know him doesn't make him a "mystery man."

He spent two years in the rotation of Fresno of the California League, and was in camp with the Giants in 1972. Topps also auctioned these images off on eBay.

Topps did not photograph Kingman with the Angels or Yankees. Other than colorized black-and-white or blurry images from video there are no known color photos of Kingman with the Yankees.

Walter Johnson 1907

As we look at a couple more Barr-Farnham 1909 postcards, we don't have to introduce the man in street clothes.

It is interesting, though, to look at the team picture postcard and who's the lead figure - Johnson - and who's right next to him. That's trainer J.W. Eddinger right behind him, and Eddinger too got a postcard. It's fascinating because of the lettering on his arm in the detail below.

In the back, at the far left of a team clearly arranged by height - is manager Pongo Joe Cantillon. There is no record of how tall he was(n't) but I'm sure some nimble mathematician could work backwards from the fact that Johnson was 6'1".

Larry Drake 1945 UIN Senators

Only identifiable because he is in full profile, here is Drake at spring training with the Senators as shown in the 10-Mar-1948 Washington Evening Star.

1942 Lou Tost

Lou Tost. Pitched in *one* game for the Pirates, in 1947.

Anyone know if a photo exists of him in a Pittsburgh uniform?

Thankew,
J

Not that I know of. He is on the UIN list and is not included in either of the 1947 Pirates team photos I have.
