Art Fromme 1906
Taking a break from the Barr-Farnham Washington Senators postcards for a much better known, much more expensive set, issued between 1908 and 1911 by St. Louis photographer Harry Bregstone and depicting both the Browns and the Cardinals.
We know this one is from the first year of issue, 1908, because it was Art Fromme's last year with the awful Cards before borderline stardom in Cincinnati and New York. Fromme would win eleven games for the 1913 N.L. Champion Giants, but did not appear in the World Series. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-01-2017 at 11:37 PM. |

Nice Larry Drake image, circa 1948
I know this is minor league photo, but it is a nice sharp photo of Larry Drake, honored for his huge season by Chattanooga Lookouts owner Joe Engel.
By the way, the p.a. announcer at the left is Luther Masingill, a Chattanooga broadcast legend that passed away just this past October at the age of 92. |

Earl Whitehill - 1943 Phillies coach
Photos are plentiful of Earl Whitehill from his playing days when he was a star pitcher from 1923 to 1939 and he finished with a 218-185 record, but does anyone have a photo of Whitehill, that they could post, from when he was the pitching coach of the 1943 Philadelphia Phillies?

Bob Sprowl 1978
You may recall we went through the saga of the paucity of images of this very brief Red Sox (1978) and Astros (1980) lefty, and I posted a shot of him I took when he was with Houston.
There is one image of Sprowl in the 1978 red-based cap (it appears to have been taken during Pitchers Fielding Practice) but I had forgotten there was also one of him in Boston's 1979 black-based cap, shown in that year's Red Sox yearbook. |

Another Spring Illusion
Left-hander John Cumberland was acquired by the Twins in November of 1972 in a deal for Wayne Granger. He was released April 10 on the eve of the 1973 season and signed with with Giants 11 days later.
But, thanks to the Vault, his spring with the Twins has been captured forever. |

Larry Monroe 1976
Spent only a few days as a pitcher with the White Sox in 1976 but has been employed continuously by them since then, most recently as an advisor to the baseball department.

Joe Morgan 1959
Long before his classic New England declaration "I'm the manager of this nine," 'The Other' Joe Morgan played for five teams in just four years, including the 1959 A's.

More Larry Monroe
Judging by the uniform, apparently he was a late-season call-up in 1975, as well. He just didn't get into any games. So the '76 season saved him from membership in the Bill Sharman Society.
(A black and white picture of Monroe in the 1975 uniform appears on page 501 of this thread.) |

Larry Monroe 1976
The George Brace photo of Monroe in 1971-75 White Sox red pinstripes underscores one of the pitfalls of trying to identify players who were on major league rosters but never appeared in games, either for a career or a given year (or even for one particular team).
The pitfall is misleading photographic evidence. I took a photo (and thought I'd posted it here, but I'll be danged if I can find it) of Tito Fuentes taking batting practice at Yankee Stadium in 1978. Full uniform, wearing number 26 - which they promptly pulled off of him and said "no, thanks." Starting second baseman Willie Randolph had been hurt and Fuentes had been cut by Oakland, and the Yankees worked him out. By accident I got a photo of him. He was never on the roster. Brace's photos have quite a few such instances. He took a shot of Casey Cox with the Cubs, warming up on the bullpen mound at Wrigley (never played for them, though they did give him some time at AAA). He had Lloyd Flodin, a top prep catching prospect of the '60s, in a full White Sox uniform (Flodin turned down the Sox, signed with the Mets). He even has a shot of Bob Arnzen, a basketball and baseball star from Notre Dame, in an Atlanta Braves' uni with a 1969 100th Anniversary patch on the sleeve. Arnzen would go to camp with the '72 Expos, and play in the NBA and ABA (on the 1973 champion Pacers) - but never for the Braves. Never did figure that one out. The Monroe thing is a little less opaque. A quick look at SABR's file of "The Sporting News" produces the explanation, in the September 21, 1974 issue (as an additional note, Monroe also went to Cooperstown with the White Sox and pitched in the 1974 Hall of Fame game): |

Larry Miller 1964
Interesting about Monroe. So I guess he wasn't a Sharman Society candidate, after all? Hmm.
Moving on, we come to someone who's an example of what Stephen Sondheim was talking about when he wrote "When you're a Met, you're a Met all the way" for West Side Story. ![]() Which is a little weird (even granting the awesomeness of the Mets, particularly in that year)…since it turns out that Topps actually photographed Larry in his Orioles uniform that spring. Okay, still BHNH, but the O's did in fact give Larry a hat. I've got the proof: So the Topps guy could have had him put it on. And even the proper uniform BHNH is better than the one that's three years old. And with #323 being in Series 3 (I think), you'd think there would be time to send the spring picture back to New York. Or did the photog simply forget to tell the home office whom he'd shot pictures of, and they just went with the file photo? Seems surprising to me, although Merkle doubtless knows way more about this stuff than I do. (As it turned out, Topps needn't have bothered with the card; the Orioles returned Larry to Phoenix and he hung his glove after the season.) Last edited by Amazin69; 08-12-2015 at 01:20 AM. |

Larry Miller
The explanation is that the 1969 Miller Topps Vault photo was taken, at the earliest, about March 1.
Miller's 1969 card, if I remember my dates correctly, was issued in the 3rd Series - which would have been released around April 20, 1969. The process of turning a brand new photo into a card in packages shipped across the nation used to take roughly three months. The series Miller was in "closed" and was printed in January, 1969. Maybe early February. The first 1969 Spring Training photos to appear on 1969 cards were in the 5th Series (starting with card number 426), which hit stores around June 1. Also, the Miller card photo doesn't show him with the Orioles. It's capless for a reason, as nearly all such shots were in that time - in case the guy got traded and they wanted to put out his card earlier than June 1. Among other things, you'll notice that his uniform has blue piping coming down from the neck and the Orioles never wore that. The image was taken at Mets' spring training 1966. |

Tommy Moore
I'm constantly amazed at how many pictures Topps took of Tommy Moore as a Met. There are some more in the most recent Vault release. But at least this release also contains some pictures of Tommy with the expansion Mariners in 1977 (and there are far fewer of those). Tom's only major league wins came with Seattle, where he ended his major league career. He did resurface in the Senior League, though, in 1989.
