The Vault Project Continues

Since there seems to be a slight lull on this thread, we wanted to try out the next phase of our Vault Project. Most of the threads (not all) have been ID'd at least in part, but some nagging gaps remain. We will put those forward a folder at time, not picturing all but inviting anyone over to Baseball Birthdays (a free site) to help ID those that remain.

Folder BF has only seven unidentified players. Here are five:

Also missing BF 404, 784

Thank you, as always, for helping.

Jim Maloney - BF-16

Believe the top photo (BF-16) is long-time Red Jim Maloney. After being released by California on January 3, 1972, he immediately signed (the next day) with St. Louis. He would have been in camp in 1972 with the Cards, before being released on April 9.

Wid Conroy 1901

A couple more Barr-Farnham 1909 Washington Senators postcards, as we plow through the last few pages of the company's team photo album.

Wid Conroy (it was originally "Widow" supposedly because he looked out in motherly fashion for the younger kids on his sandlot teams) broke in with the original 1901 Milwaukee Brewers, jumped twice during the AL-NL wars (and was so good at shortstop in Pittsburgh that the Pirates moved Honus Wagner to the outfield to make room for him), and was later sold by the Yankees to the Senators for the huge sum of $5,000.

Conroy finished his eleven year career with an impressive WAR of 21.8 and while primarily a third baseman, he also played more than 300 games at short and in the outfield. He later managed in the minors, coached for the Phillies, and lost his son and namesake at Okinawa in 1945.

Bob Ganley 1905

Until Bob Ganley hit .316 for the Des Moines Underwriters of the Western League in 1905, he seemed to be destined to be a bush league lifer. Then, the 30-year old Ganley was selected by the Pirates in the then-traditional end-of-season minor league draft.

Ganley would finish the season in the Pirate outfield and hit .315 the rest of the way, but never again came close to those numbers in Pittsburgh or Washington. About the time this postcard was printed - May 18, 1909 - the Senators sold him to the A's and he finished his big league career there that year.

If the Ganley image looks a little less clear than the other Barr-Farnhams it's because alone in the album, his postcard has been replaced by a more recent photo made from the original. This lends substance to the theory that this copy of the album was a Ganley family heirloom.

Burt Keeley 1908

If you're like me, you've read so often about how unusual this-or-that early 20th Century player was because he'd gone to college, that you've become convinced two out of three of them at least played for a college team.

Burt "Speed" Keeley was a star at Notre Dame whom the Senators had signed in 1908 and stuck directly into the rotation - and as Walter Johnson's roommate. He won his major league debut against Boston on April 18, 1908, but prevailed only five more times in the American League before being sent out to Omaha in the middle of May, 1909. A railroad injury forced him into retirement, and he returned to his native Chicago in 1912 as manager of that city's entrant in a field precursor to the Federal League.

(Note: I'm posting a fourth postcard tonight, of 1909 Senators' manager Joe Cantillon. But since he never played in the majors, he goes in the Managers thread).

The Young Ichiro

I'm looking for photos or Japanese baseball card images of Ichiro Suzuki from his playing days in the Japanese Leagues with the Orix Blue Wave.
Any images posted by members would be much appreciated.

Mythical pic request - Padres edition

Have seen past requests for one of these players but I thought I would circle back just in case some have surfaced.

Looking for a color pic of Dave Wehrmeister and John D'Acquisto circa 1977. A non edited head shot of Dave appears as a 4-panel in the '77 Topps set so it appears something exists of him. John was traded in May and received no card in the '78 set. Thanks in advance!

The unis would have looked like this as they changed heading into the '78 season:

As an added cruel twist, it just so happens that another on my hit list just happens to be on the same card with Bob McClure as a Royal. So is it safe to assume that the originals are somewhere in the Topps Vault? I'm relatively healthy and have a few decades to wait and find out.....
