Awards
National League Names Top Gloves
Tuesday, September 25th, 1900: "Ball hawk" is a good name for the members of the defensive elite, the players who make leather shine. The fielders who crashed the wall, leaped in the air, and dived in the hole better than any others during 1900 have been tabbed as the National League's Glove Wizard Award winners. Here are this year's best:

Pitcher: Vic Willis (Pittsburgh Pirates)
Catcher: Roger Bresnahan (Philadelphia Phillies)
First Baseman: Tom McCreery (Cincinnati Reds)
Second Baseman: Nap Lajoie (Boston Beaneaters)
Third Baseman: Sammy Strang (Brooklyn Superbas)
Shortstop: Honus Wagner (Brooklyn Superbas)
Left Fielder: Sam Mertes (St. Louis Cardinals)
Center Fielder: Emmet Heidrick (Philadelphia Phillies)
Right Fielder: Elmer Flick (St. Louis Cardinals)

AL Glove Wizard Award Winners Announced
Tuesday, September 25th, 1900: Making the play is the mark of great defenders. Spearing a liner, diving in the hole or crashing headlong into the wall makes no difference to these awe-inspiring fielders. Magicians they sometimes appear to be, showing up out of nowhere to rob a batter of a hit and to turn a hit into an out. Pitchers love 'em and batters curse 'em. These defensive wizards will collect their 1900 American League Glove Wizard Awards tonight:

Pitcher: Noodles Hahn (Washington Senators)
Catcher: Tom Daly (Baltimore Orioles)
First Baseman: Harry Taylor (Baltimore Orioles)
Second Baseman: Heinie Reitz (Chicago White Sox)
Third Baseman: Jimmy Collins (Chicago White Sox)
Shortstop: George Davis (Baltimore Orioles)
Left Fielder: Jesse Burkett (Philadelphia Athletics)
Center Fielder: Roy Thomas (Cleveland Blues)
Right Fielder: Danny Green (Baltimore Orioles)

Chesbro Wins NL Rookie of the Year
Wednesday, September 26th, 1900:
They say first impressions are lasting impressions. If this is true, National League hitters had better be wary -- Jack Chesbro could be around for years to come. The St. Louis starter took home the 1900 NL Newcomer of the Year Award today.

Chesbro fashioned a 21-18 mark in 42 starts. He threw 335.2 innings, collected 110 strikeouts and put up a 3.30 ERA.

Beck Crowned Best AL Rookie
Wednesday, September 26th, 1900: 1900 was a much better year than Erve Beck expected. This spring he was overjoyed at just making the Cleveland roster. Not only did he make the team, he was the starting second baseman. Then it got even better.

In his debut season, Beck hit .312 with 163 hits in 522 at-bats, 7 home runs, 94 RBIs, 16 bases on balls and a .331 on-base percentage -- good enough numbers to be honored with the American League Newcomer of the Year Award.

Stemmeyer Top Choice, Wins Outstanding Pitcher Award
Friday, September 28th, 1900: Bill Stemmeyer of the Boston Beaneaters might be an old man, but he can still pitch with the best of them. Today the 35-year-old hurler snagged the National League Outstanding Pitcher Award honors for his outstanding 1900 performance.

He posted a 2.66 ERA with 28 wins, 9 losses, 139 strikeouts and 64 walks in 327.2 innings.

Chicago Pitcher Racks Up Outstanding Pitcher Award
Friday, September 28th, 1900:
The Chicago clubhouse staff referred to him as "the kid" this season. Next year Rube Waddell will have to have a new nickname. He earned it after winning the 1900 American League Outstanding Pitcher Award.

Waddell made 41 starts this year, winning 26 and losing 12. He threw 361.1 innings, fanned 295, allowed 300 hits and 95 walks, while holding opposing teams to a .218 average as he logged an impressive 2.39 ERA.

NL Announces Outstanding Batter Award
Saturday, September 29th, 1900: Nap Lajoie went on a year-long hitting rampage against National League pitchers and collected the Outstanding Hitter Award for 1900.

The Boston second baseman battered the opposition for 209 hits, 43 doubles, 4 triples, 11 home runs and 112 RBIs, while scoring 112 runs. He hit .354 and posted a .377 on-base percentage.

Danny Green Captures Best Bat Trophy
Saturday, September 29th, 1900: Baltimore's Danny Green teed off on opposing pitching all season long and claimed the American League Outstanding Hitter Award today.

He belted out 175 hits in 490 at-bats to compile a .357 batting average and a .410 on-base percentage in 1900. He also tallied 29 doubles, 11 triples, 10 home runs, 86 RBIs, and 113 runs scored.

NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed
Tuesday, October 2nd, 1900: North American BaseBall League divulged the 1900 list of eligible draftees today. It got little play in BNN coverage and why should it? Most players drafted in thirty days won't be on a big league club for years, if at all. Some will languish listlessly at the minor league level. Others will suffer a series of misfortunes, never quite making their mark, but always wowing scouts with their potential. And yet, some lucky team will draw a needle out of a haystack, send him off to the minors and forget about him for a while, only to realize they've got a Hall of Famer on their hands.

The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be:
1. Earl Moore, 21 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
2. Watty Lee, 21 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
3. Case Patten, 26 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
4. Happy Townsend, 21 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
5. Ed Siever, 25 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
6. Lefty Davis, 25 year-old right fielder out of college.
7. Frank Owen, 20 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
8. Irv Waldron, 28 year-old right fielder out of college.
9. George Winter, 22 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
10. Davy Jones, 20 year-old left fielder out of college.

NABL News: First-Year Player Draft
Thursday, November 1st, 1900: Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore, Cincinnati and Boston are first on tap in the 1900 draft. What they will do with their coveted slots is anybody's guess. Some will go with the obvious choices, while others will try to shake things up, sending a collective wave of chaos through North American BaseBall League clubhouses. In a poll of BNN analysts, these amateurs were projected to be the first ten picks:

1. Irv Waldron, 28 year-old right fielder out of college.
2. Eddie Plank, 25 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
3. Watty Lee, 21 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
4. Doc White, 21 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
5. Burt Hart, 30 year-old first baseman out of college.
6. Ed Siever, 25 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
7. Lefty Davis, 25 year-old right fielder out of college.
8. Case Patten, 26 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
9. Jim Delahanty, 21 year-old third baseman out of college.
10. Bob Wicker, 22 year-old starting pitcher out of college.

1901 Washington Year In Review

The Washington Senators made the leap from tied for last place in 1900 to almost catching the Cleveland Blue this season. Rookies Matty McIntyre and Jim Miller led the offense, while improved output by Noodles Hahn bolstered the pitching staff. Attendance was up 39% We were rated #1 with our starters, they only allowed 725 runs and 38 HRs.

Pitching:

Noodles Hahn 27-12. 3.36 164 strike outs.
Noodles will most likely win the Pitcher of the Year Award. He bounced back from a disappointing 12-23 in 1900.

Cy Young 22-17, 2.95 188 strike outs.
Cy had a very good year. He needs 12 wins for 200 victories. Allowing only 5 HRs this season, an improvement over the 13 he allowed in 1900.

Christy Mathewson 19-24, 3.62 191 strike outs.
Christy improved this year. Going from a 12-18 performance, next year could be his breakout year.

Batting:
Cy Seymour .330 7 HR 83 RBIs.
Cy, despite playing only 74 games in his first 5 years of his career, pulled through this season. Anchoring center field with a .959 rating with only 15 errors.

Matty McIntyre .333 89 RBIs.
Matty could very well win the NewComer of the Year Award. A .937 rating in left field will cement his role in 1902.

Doc Casey .298 2 HR 56 RBIs.
Doc had his best year yet. Bouncing back from a dismal .248 in 1900, he slightly outperformed this year with one more HR and driving in 7 more runs. He looks to have a break out year in 1902.

Awards
Best Defenders Announced by NL
Sunday, October 27th, 1901: Making the play is the mark of great defenders. These defensive wizards will collect their 1901 National League Glove Wizard Awards tonight:

Pitcher: Joe Corbett (Cincinnati Reds)
Catcher: Lave Cross (Brooklyn Superbas)
First Baseman: Duff Cooley (Philadelphia Phillies)
Second Baseman: Nap Lajoie (Boston Beaneaters)
Third Baseman: Sammy Strang (Brooklyn Superbas)
Shortstop: Bill Dahlen (New York Giants)
Left Fielder: Tuck Turner (Boston Beaneaters)
Center Fielder: Charlie Hemphill (Brooklyn Superbas)
Right Fielder: Chick Stahl (Chicago Orphans)

AL Honors Outstanding Fielders
Sunday, October 27th, 1901: Good defense can be the difference between taking the championship and coming in second. The American League announced its top defenders at each position today. Here are the Glove Wizard Award winners for 1901:

Pitcher: Rube Waddell (Chicago White Sox)
Catcher: Ossee Schreckengost (Chicago White Sox)
First Baseman: Kitty Bransfield (St. Louis Browns)
Second Baseman: John Farrell (St. Louis Browns)
Third Baseman: John McGraw (Detroit Tigers)
Shortstop: George Davis (Baltimore Orioles)
Left Fielder: Jesse Burkett (Philadelphia Athletics)
Center Fielder: Cozy Dolan (Milwaukee Brewers)
Right Fielder: Jimmy Bannon (Cleveland Blues)

1901 Best NL Rookie Picked
Monday, October 28th, 1901: Doc White's age didn't show very often in his first year. He performed more like a veteran on the hill for the Philadelphia Phillies and today he walked away with the 1901 National League Newcomer of the Year Award.

The 22-year-old starter registered a 24-17 record this season in 45 starts. Over 359 innings he gave up 418 hits, struck out 165 and issued 88 walks as he held the opposition to a .284 batting average and fashioned a 3.53 ERA.

Plank Choice for Best Newcomer
Monday, October 28th, 1901: Few players have American League received the Newcomer of the Year Award -- there is only one chosen each season.

This year Boston newcomer Eddie Plank moved up into that elite circle, outclassing his first-year contemporaries.

Plank registered 22 wins and 21 losses in 47 starts, striking out 125 and carving out a 2.99 ERA. He allowed only 478 hits in 385.1 innings as he held the opposition to a .291 average.

King of the Hill Announced by National League
Wednesday, October 30th, 1901: The Outstanding Pitcher Award for 1901 has been presented and the National League winner is Andy Dunning of Boston.

"It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Dunning. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Beaneaters star told reporters.

Dunning excelled with an impressive 26-6 record in 44 starts. In 267.2 innings he yielded 208 hits and 162 walks, while striking out 305 and compiling a fine 2.86 ERA.

Keenan Triumphs in Outstanding Pitcher Award Voting
Wednesday, October 30th, 1901: The Philadelphia Athletics have a rising superstar or maybe even a budding Hall-of-Famer in the making.
It's Kid Keenan, this year's American League Outstanding Pitcher Award selection. This blossoming hurler wowed fans, peers and sportswriters with a fabulous performance.

Keenan compiled a 25-13 record in 43 starts, tallied 434 strikeouts in 351.2 innings and recorded a 3.15 ERA. Other clubs managed only a .227 batting average against him.

Lajoie NL's Top Hitter for 1901
Thursday, October 31st, 1901: It's been a year of triumph for veteran Nap Lajoie of the Boston Beaneaters as he hit his way to the 1901 National League Outstanding Hitter Award.

The 27-year-old veteran compiled a .395 average and .418 on-base percentage by putting together 251 hits, 49 doubles, 22 triples, 16 home runs and 24 walks. He also scored 146 times and drove in 154 runs.

Buck Freeman Captures Best Bat Trophy
Thursday, October 31st, 1901: What a way to finish off the year -- being honored with the 1901 Outstanding Hitter Award in the American League. It had already been a very special season for Detroit's Buck Freeman, but today's announcement really put the icing on his cake.

All season long Buck Freeman gave opposing pitchers fits by hitting .375 as he collected 212 hits, 42 doubles, 25 triples, 15 home runs and 138 RBIs.

In 828 career games Samuels is hitting at a .321 pace with 982 hits with 169 doubles, 31 triples and 44 homers while scoring 548 runs and racking up 540 RBIs. He logged 300 walks and owns a .380 on-base percentage.
