More of Dan Neville, who actually DID make the majors. He was called up for the end of the 1964 season, but when the Phillies went into their skid and Cincinnati was suddenly in the pennant race, manager Dick Sisler never got around to using Neville in a game.

He failed to make the team the next spring, and was back in San Diego.

Braxton, the Tribe's 11th-round pick in the 1967 January draft (from UNC-Wilmiington). Confusingly enough, the *other* Jim Braxton (the one who went on to be O.J. Simpson's fullback with the Buffalo Bills) was drafted by the Cardinals in the 9th round of the June draft that same year.

Braxton seemed to progress well through the system, but was released after posting a 13-5 record with Savannah (AA) and Wichita (AAA) in 1970. He was 27 at the start of 1971 (23 when drafted) but it's still surprising he wasn't picked up by anyone.

Reference sites call him "James" Braxton, but contemporary accounts, like this call him Jim, and he signed a 1969 Portland Beavers autograph sheet that way, so I'm calling him Jim.

Braxton got to Spring Training on two occasions. The uniform with Centennial patch is from 1969, so I'm guessing these are from 1970 and 1971.

Credit to John (Baseball-Birthdays) for the two "cleaned up" images. Even if he somehow did call Braxton "Tom Braxton", as in the jazz musician.

Scott pitched for 12 years in the minors, never really having a big year at AAA, and so never making the bigs.

He did make an Orioles training camp in the mid-1960s, though. The uniform is the 1964-1965 Baltimore home outfit, with the IMO shocking "Orioles" in block letters instead of the familiar script, and the "wood-cut" Oriole on the cap. So that probably means this from 1965 or 1966.

I also have a smaller version, but I have no idea why PostImage won't provide me with hotlinks for images under 100 pixels any more. Policy change? Sorry about that.

Arthur Mack Payne, the Royals' 9th round pick in 1970 (out of Arkansas A&M [now Arkansas-Pine Bluff]) only lasted three seasons in O.B., and never got above A-ball.

But that first half-season was good enough to earn him a trip to Spring Training in 1971 (that's a 1970 road uniform he's wearing), and Topps took a couple of pictures.

Later, of course, he had his life made into an action movie…no, wait, that was MAX Payne. Never mind.

The 7th overall pick in 1972, Payne was drafted ahead of Dick Ruthven, Jamie Quirk, Scott McGregor, and Chet Lemon, among other 1st-round picks.

He progressed nicely through the Reds' system, going 13-9, 2.24 for Tampa (A) and Trois-Rivieres (AA) in 1973, 10-6 and 2.61 at Trois-Rivieres in 1974, and 9-12 and 3.16 for Indianapolis (AAA) in 1975.

This earned him a trip to Tampa and Spring Training with the Reds in 1976. But he couldn't crack the World Champions' staff and was sent back to Indianapolis, where he pitched increasingly poorly over the next three years, until getting released in '78.

A 6'2" left-hander signed as an 18-year-old by the Orioles, he was left unprotected in the "first-year" portion of the Rule V draft, and the Reds snagged him. Apparently, that got you on the 40-man roster, and he went to camp with the Reds, even though Henderson was ticketed for A-ball.

Here's a Topps picture, my attempt to color-correct it, and a black-&-white of Henderson with Chet Nichols:

At the end of 1964 (Henderson went 11-6 and 3.14 for Peninsula) the Houston Colt .45s (in one of their final pre-Astros acts) took Henderson in the regular Rule V draft, so there are probably some pictures of him in Astros gear from 1965 Spring Training, but I haven't found them.

He didn't make the Astros (obviously), was returned to the Reds, and spent the next three years pitching with middling success for Knoxville in the Southern League (AA).

At the end of 1967, he was promoted to Buffalo (AAA) and went 2-3, 2.48 in his five starts there. A nice AAA debut…and yet, it was the end of Henderson's career, for reasons unknown. He was still only 22 at the time.
