Well? Coming off the single best April in league history is enough to make a guy smile. Think about this. I just won 21 of 24 games with my best hitter, Cortezo, not getting above .200 until the final 4 days of the month. Juan Flores is as advertised. Kennan Hallamore continues to just get better and better. Ernesto Galindo picks up some hardware as does Joe Cummings. 7 Games up on May 1st. Some good starts and a few bad ones but nothing out of the ordinary except maybe San Diego at 10-14 when they've been picked to win that division. Alaska was busy as heck this winter and they can't be happy at 6 games under.

A starting rotation with a 16-2 3.76 record at the end of April. The pen has been insane and Turners ERA is a one-game blowup.
Offensively Serge Baud is a concern given his 3 errors. He has to catch the ball if he wants to play every day here and be a drag on the offense. Cortezo hit in the .180's almost the entire month. The “Cadams” duo at DH combined to go .350-6-24 for the month.
The other number you do not see is Arturo Mendoza. He is hitting .390/.433/.559 with 2 HR 16 RBI in 15 starts. We are working it so that he plays 3B five games a week, pitches the 6th day and takes the 7th day off to recuperate.
Alamogordo is off to a rough start but Farmington is just the Hobbs team that dominated last year, 1 year older. Jeff LeDoux has thrown 32 innings over 4 starts in Farmington.
  • AL PLAYER OF THE MONTH – Tomohide Shimasaki (CHI) .372-6-21
  • NL PLAYER OF THE MONTH – Jeff Boles (OK) .365-7-19
  • AL PITCHER OF THE MONTH – Ernesto Galindo (FLA) 3-0 8 SV 1.17 ERA
  • NL PITCHER OF THE MONTH – Steve Cooke (TEX) 3-0 7 SV 0.00 ERA
  • AL ROOKIE OF THE MONTH – Joe Cummings (FLA) .342-3-16
  • NL ROOKIE OF THE MONTH – Davon Pinkins (POT) .306-4-13

I just have a couple questions and a request;

How good is that pitcher you took at 1-1 and traded to Minnesota?

Why do you use 1-20 scale instead of 20-80?

Can you post your hitters/pitchers scouting reports as a team? I am interested to see your scouts opinion.

Great job so far, the system is stoked with arms and it looks like your gonna have a 2-4 year window coming up.

Hey

There is no way to spin that trade. With Haupt turning into a dog I gave up this kid, and more, to get 1 year of output and 3 years of a clubhouse clown

The 20-80 vs 1-20 debate is a great one. I am a detail-oriented guy, so when I began playing it was 1-100 but I realized it made it hard to tell the difference. What did a 75 contact mean vs 85, or was it that simple? 75% vs 85%?
I wanted more FoW, so I went to 1-10, and about that time I found Orcin's Colonels and was enthralled. I came to feel, for me, 1-10 was too narrow and 1-100 was too wide for me. 1-20 feels perfect for me and my tastes when it comes to details.
To be honest, I am seriously considering going to STAR ratings only.
I feel like the rating systems makes me look away from things that might otherwise be important, hgt, wgt, age and what not.
If that makes sense.

  • Joe Vertz had a month for the ages. 17 homers put him in another galaxy for the home run chase.
  • Check out the NL offensive categories and then look at the standings. San Antonio's not much of a mystery.
  • Detroit is starting to tighten up the east and Chicago and Vegas appear to be putting their divisions in the rearview.
  • The Miners and Jets are clearly eating their division opponents alive. LA is appearing to once again gut the west and get back into the postseason. San Diego disappointing the experts who thought they might win it.
Joe Cummings takes home Tarpon Hitter of the Month after hitting .316-5-15
Ernesto Galindo had 10 saves over 12 appearances. 13 IP 11 H 21 K 0 R for Pitcher of the month.

  • 6/30: CHI 7 FLA 4 Raita Yamada PotG W (8-7 3.07) 7 IP 8 H 1 ER 1 BB 2 K Knightner SV (20)
  • Christman and Funicello 3-4 Willoughby L (7-4 3.22) 5 IP 6 H 4 ER 2 BB 4 K
  • Mendelson got the win going 5 giving up 10 hits and 5 earned but was bailed out by the leagues best offense in a 7-6 win. 2009 55th overall pick Amari McEady got his 1st professional save.
  • Phoenix learned it will have to go the rest of 2009 without one of its most talented young stars. 25-year-old Yuki Tamagata (16-8 3.54 last year) will undergo Tommy John Surgery and miss the next 12-18 months. He was 4-5 4.62 on the year.
  • 7/1: FLA 7 CHI 1 Pollock PotG W (7-4 3.25) CG 7 H 1 ER 0 BB 7 K Hallamore 2-5 HR (11) 2 RBI (47) 2 SB (26) Error (14) Saldana 2-4 2B (12) HR (7) RBI (28) (.238)
  • 2009 59th overall selection Ben Phillips made his 2nd start for Rio Rancho today and tossed his 2nd CG. This time an 11 K 2 hit shutout. He's 2-0 1.50 with 18 IP 7 H 14 K 6 BB in his two starts.
  • Toshiyoshi Nakata allowed just 3 hits in a 2-0 win over Washington to win just his 3rd game of the year. He's 3-9 4.95
  • Two way start Dwain Milazzo (LA) won his 10th game today in a 4-0 win over Texas. He is 10-4 3.28 and is hitting .301-3-24 in 46 games playing around the LA infield.

TARPONS, MINUTEMEN SWAP PROSPECTS
The Florida Tarpons have sent 2008 2nd round draft choice Catcher Jimmy Helms to the New England Minutemen for a pair of minor leaguers. Coming back in the deal is 24-year-old two-way talent Pat Peterson and 24 year old IF Winton Montalbetti. The Tarpons have coveted Peterson for a while now a league source has told us. Peterson was added to the roster and called up to the parent club and Montalbetti will play SS every day at Alamogordo.

GM'S OFFICE
I have a dearth of catching talent but much of it is offensively oriented. I took the most 'valued' player in that group from a potential trading partner perspective and when I called around on Helms the response was both quick and overwhelming. Truth be told I'd have made this deal for EITHER of these players. Peterson is an everyday corner OF in any lineup in the game, right now. He's also a mid 90's southpaw who dominates left-handed hitters. He'll move into Darensburgs 4th outfield slot as well as be a specialist out of the bullpen. Montalbetti is a future ABA player at either of three positions and he has a great glove. This was a huge win from my perspective. It thins out my plethora of catching prospects and allows some of the other young backstops to get more time behind the plate and it adds a second two-way talent to the major league roster.

INTERNATIONAL FA MARKET OPENS TODAY
It's an enormous market and the 1.4 million cap prevents teams from overstepping if they want to avail themselves next year. We went overboard 2 years ago, sat out last year and are back in the game this year. I extended an aggressive offer on day 1 to 16-year-old Puerto Rican SS Gregorio Figueroa. He's asking 1.4 but took a 900K offer to his agents to discuss. The prize on this market is 1B Jorge Montoya, also from Puerto Rico. A monster bat with potential triple crown capability. LA has already inked 2 players and St Louis, Buffalo San Antonio and Oklahoma have all signed one apiece. There are pitchers in this group but few are top end rotation guys according to our scouts. If I can snag Guerrero for under a million I also want to try and corral another 16-year-old SS in Teagan Poste out of Canada.
  • 7/2: MIN 4 FLA 1 Kunichi Mikami PotG W (6-6 5.42) 7 IP 5 H 1 ER 1 BB 5 K
  • Samvdio L (9-4 3.59) 6 IP 10 H 4 ER 3 BB 3 K Saldana 2-4 (.243)

We have a ton of expiring contracts for personnel. I am going to look closely at the coaches that are up. I've already extended my assistant GM and the team trainer Sue Falsone. Of the 12 coaches up for a new deal, I've extended just 2 and will look to replace the rest in the offseason. I am not happy with the coaching being done in AA and AAA across the board.
  • 7/3: MIN 7 FLA 5 Mendoza L (6-3 4.57) 5.1 IP 6 H 6 ER 2 BB 3 K Makowski 3-4 RBI (3) Cortezo HR (10) 2 RBI (38)
  • 7/4: FLA 10 MIN 2 beat former 1st pick Joe Linn for the 3rd time this season (3.1 IP 7 H 8 R 4 ER)
  • Sugihara PotG W (7-2 5.10) 7 IP 4 H 1 R 0 ER 1 BB 9 K Baud 2-4 2 R 2 RBI (34) 2 SB (21) Flores 2 SB (48) Christman 2-4 2B (2) HR (1) 3 RBI (6)
  • Gregorio Figueroa agreed to terms on a 900K signing bonus and the 16-year-old reported to our IC this morning.
  • Also, I cleaned house in AAA. All three coaches were let go and a new staff was put in place.
  • 7/5: FLA 6 BRK 2 Alatorre PotG W (7-3 3.11) 7 IP 9 H 2 ER 1 BB 7 K Hallamore 3-5 2 2B (10) RBI (49) SB (28) CS (13) Flores R RBI (36) 2 SB (50)
  • In Juan Alatorre's last 7 starts he has thrown 55.1 IP striking out 48 with a 1.79 ERA but his record is just 2-1.
  • Brad Turner is on another roll. In his last 28 games he's thrown 33.2 IP punching out 56 to an ERA of 0.80 to bring his season totals to 3-3 1.49 after a rough April.
  • Clovis destroyed Aurora today 21-4 and there were some box score numbers to smile at. Starter Josh Thompson struck out a career-high and Clovis club record-tying 14 over 7.1 innings. On the offensive side of things: Fine 3-3 R HR (26) 3 RBI (81) Gammel 2-5 4 R 3 RBI (3) 2B (1) Persinger 3-3 2 2B (10) HR (15) 5 RBI (44) Teagan Meloche went 5-6 2B (23) R 3 RBI (55)
  • Dusty McCarthy (DEN) shut out Ohio 4-0 to move to 7-1 2.47
  • Dave Young (ALK) scattered 5 hits in the Kodiaks 9-0 win over Milwaukee. He's 9-6 3.27
  • AL POTW – Ernesto Montiel (CHI) 13-28 3 HR 9 RBI (.286-16-65)
  • NL POTW – Dan Goodman (PIT) 11-25 4 HR 8 RBI (.266-16-48)

Wake Forest defeats the Aggies of Texas A& M for their first College World Series Title. The Aggies were trying to become just the 4th team to win two titles.
19-year-old Luis Morales took home the Golden Spikes award as he pitched the Iowa State Cyclones to another playoff birth with a 5-2 2.19 season. Striking out 73 in just 61.2 innings. At the plate, the 6'2 freshman hit .264 with 7 HRs and 21 RBI's.
Also, in High School news the Faith Academy Rams beat Bob Jones HS to win the NAIA High School championship 2 games to 0.

AL PLAYER OF THE MONTH – Layne Cosman (OH) .337-10-20 (.278-18-43)
NL PLAYER OF THE MONTH – Jonathan Huber (NE) .386-9-27 (.309-20-59)
AL PITCHER OF THE MONTH – Luis Samvdio (FLA) 4-0 1.36 (9-3 3.43)
NL PITCHER OF THE MONTH – Shamar Scippio (SAN) 4-2 2.20 (6-3 2.92)
AL ROOKIE OF THE MONTH – Steve Patrick (STL) .309-11-23 (.258-16-42)
NL ROOKIE OF THE MONTH – Chris Golebiowski (KC) .422-3-13 (.323-8-29)

Shaping up to be one of the least climactic Septembers in memory. 2 6, a 7, 9 and 10 game leads. The only division under 6 is the NL East and that's just the Jets and Miners with the next closest being the Minuteman at 10. The NL Wild Card could be interesting as could the AL if someone(s) get hot. Sergio Robles has perched himself atop the league as one of the 2-3 premiere talents and at just 24 is laying the foundations of a hall of fame career. While I am more than pleased with both big FA signings Juan Flores has exceeded my wildest expectations at the plate. He's on pace to steal 97 bases. That would shatter the single-season mark of 81 set just last year by Washington Jet Juan Burruel. While Gabbio certainly has not hit as I had expected, yet, he's done a yeoman's job guiding this young staff through the years first 77 games. Tim Reese set the single-season mark with 53 saves last season but Galindo is on pace to save 59 right now. Seems saves and opportunities come and go in streaks but he's been amazing all year long. His ERA would be sub 1.00 but for one disaster of a game. Joe Vertz appears to be Robles main contender for the MVP as he's slowed a bit but his monster June put him far out in front of the HR race and he's working on a batting title. Triple Crown possibility? Leith McNayr and Doug Schneider are just wrecking NL pitching and if the season ended today I don't see anyone arguing them finishing 1-2 in the MVP race. But in what order?
The two-headed duo from Japan has propelled Las Vegas all year long on the mound. 25-year-old Tousei Sato (10-2 2.26 124 K's) and veteran Jin-Hyun Noh (11-1 3.19 123 K's) sit atop a rotation that is cutting through the AL West. Dominic Loetzsch is off his MVP pace but his .256-17-50 season has been more than good enough.
