Walkers news: August 30 -- St. Louis 3, Green Bay 1
Record: 77-52, 2nd, 3 GB Des Moines
Rookie Xavier Wigfall allowed one run over the first seven innings to help St. Louis down Green Bay 3-1 at Busch Stadium (1997). Wigfall (3-2) allowed just two hits in his time on the mound -- one of them a solo homer to Ozzie Albies in the first inning which put the Mallards up 1-0 -- while striking out seven and not issuing a walk. The River Walkers took the lead in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of a two-run homer from Jose Ramirez off Green Bay starter Ben Hughes. St. Louis picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Jean Carmona scored the run after a one-out single off reliever Justin Doughtie. A wild pickoff throw moved Carmona to second. He scored on a two-out single by Jose Segura. Ricky Cisneros took the mound to start the eighth for the Walkers, and retired the first two batters he faced before allowing a two-out double to Zarek Mackowiak. Cory Tiller took over and got Drew Ellis to fly out to end the inning. Tiller allowed a two-out single to Albies in the ninth, but nothing else to earn his third save. |

Walkers news: August 31 -- St. Louis 8, Green Bay 3
Record: 78-52, 2nd, 3 GB Des Moines
Kaneo Kawamoto threw six shutout innings -- before giving up three in the seventh, but St. Louis led 7-0 by that time -- and the River Walkers downed Green Bay 8-3 at Busch Stadium (1997). Kawamoto (6-8) would end up allowing three runs on six hits over his seven innings. He struck out three and walked two. The Walkers took control early with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning off Mallards starter Pablo Lopez. Nathaniel Dixon led off the inning with a triple, and scored when Lopez's first pitch to the next batter, Thairo Estrada, found its way to the backstop. Estrada eventually coaxed a walk. A double by Jose Segura moved Estrada to third, and he scored on a Nick Shaw fly ball. St. Louis expanded its lead to 5-0 with a three-run fifth. Home runs powered the outburst. Shaw led off the inning with a homer off Lopez. Ricky Liriano later hit a two-run homer. A pair of runs in the sixth made it 7-0. Liriano drove in his third run of the game with a single off reliever Benjamin Brecht. Dixon also picked up an RBI with a single. Zarek Mackowiak drove in all three Green Bay runs in the seventh with a bases-loaded double. Andres Hernandez set the Mallards down in order in the eighth for the Walkers. Cory Tiller ended it by doing the same in the ninth. |

Record: 79-52, 2nd, 2.5 GB Des Moines
Tied 2-2, St. Louis scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning -- an outburst capped by a three-run homer from Jose Ramirez, the first of his two homers in the game -- and went on to defeat Ann Arbor 8-3 at Busch Stadium (1997). Jared Thomas led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk from Wolfpack relief pitcher Jayden Prater. Pinch-hitter Alex Greene and Nathaniel Dixon followed with singles to load the bases. Ann Arbor pulled to within 6-3 with a run in the top of the seventh -- Ramon Montes driving in Lee Cutshaw with a fly ball off Yeison Santos -- but the Walkers polished off the win when Ramirez hit his second homer of the game in the eighth. It was a two-run shot off Ann Arbor reliever Chad Stephenson. Walkers starting pitcher Zack Hunsicker went six innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out four and walked four. Andres Hernandez started the seventh, but failed to retire any of their three batters he faced. Yeison Santos came on and retired two batters, one of them Mantos' sac fly. Walkers news: Sept. 3 -- Ann Arbor 3, St. Louis 1
Record: 79-53, 2nd, 3.5 GB Des Moines
Ann Arbor broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the top of the fourth inning, and the Wolfpack went on to defeat St. Louis at Busch Stadium (1997). The loss ended a six-game win streak for the River Walkers. Eddie Estrella got things going for the Wolfpack with a one-out single off St. Louis starting pitcher Jesse McNaboe. Estrella moved to second on a wild pickoff throw by Walkers catcher Jared Thomas. A single by RJ Teijerio moved Estrella to third, and when Jorge Gil was hit by a pitch the bases were loaded. Ramon Montes quickly unloaded them with a bases-clearing double as the Wolfpack went up 3-0. St. Louis didn't score until the bottom of the ninth, when Jose Ramirez led off with a double and scored when Nick Shaw reached on an error by Ann Arbor shortstop Rece Hinds. Thacker, who spent the bulk of his minor league career, didn't allow another run to earn his 26th save. Ann Arbor starting pitcher Josh Downer (11-10) pitched six scoreless innings during which he allowed three hits. He struck out seven and walked two. John Curtiss and Edgar Lamas both blanked the Walkers for an inning before Thacker took over in the ninth. McNaboe (16-7) had to leave the game in the fifth inning with a back injury. He is expected to be out for five days, so he may need to have his next start pushed back. |

Record: 79-55, 2nd, 5.5 GB Des Moines
Trailing 7-6, Ann Arbor hit three consecutive home runs off St. Louis reliever Cory Tiller in the top of the seventh inning and the Wolf Pack went on to defeat the River Walkers 10-7 at Busch Stadium (1997). The victory gave Ann Arbor wins in the final three games of the four-game series. St. Louis, which had trailed 6-0 at one point, the Wolf Pack pounding Walkers starting Xavier Wigfall for six runs in the top of the second, had taken a 7-6 lead after scoring four times in the bottom of the sixth. Jose Segura hit a solo homer off Ann Arbor reliever Chad Stephenson to lead off the inning. Jae-hong Chang later hit a two-run shot to put the Walkers in front. But the for the second consecutive game, Tiller was not right. He struck out Enrique Bradford to open the inning. But Lee Cutshaw, Eddie Estrella and Rece Hinds all cleared the wall -- it only took seven pitches -- to put the Wolf Pack in front 9-7. TIller, who had not blown a save all season, now has two in as many games. Hinds made it 10-7 in the top of the eighth with an RBI single off Josh Forgy. Ann Arbor starter Chris Novotny lasted four innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. He struck out five and walked three. Six relievers followed him to the mound -- Chad Stephenson (1.2 IP), John Curtiss (0.1), David McLoughlin (1.0), Edgar Lamas (1.0) and Ryan Rolison (1.0) -- with Stephenson taking the worst of the damage being charged with four runs in the top of the sixth.
