Kudo to OOTP for this page hitting the 1,300 mark. That's a lot of images without a lot of duplication.

You got my hobby love back on track when I found this page (and all it links to).

I actually got his autograph when I was a kid. My dad had a flower shop in the hotel where visiting teams (icluding the Senators) in Boston would stay. He sounded a bit like Gomer Pyle when he spoke but he was a great guy for a then 12 year old kid to chat with.

Tony Muser

It's not too often you see a nice color photo of Tony Muser with the Bosox, for whom he played a grand total of 2 games in 1969. But thanks to the TV, here he is...

Closing out a Topps Folder

These are the last remamining unidentified images from Topps Folder EG. A couple of them have two images.

A couple of these seem so darn familiar. But am brain dead (long story).

Or, Jim Van Wyck. Thanks! I'd thought I'd seen him in this thread before, but I could not find it (see brain dead remark above).

Topps Theft

Something untoward has happened in Vault land. If you see the negatives recently auctioned off on eBay for Norm Miller (Dodgers), Randy Miller (there go those Expos images), Don Mincher (A's), Charlie Mitchell, John Mitchell, Dave Oliver, Randy Sealy and Tito Stewart pop up for sale somewhere or scanned without the watermark, post something here. They report they had a load of outgoing packages stolen - those were among the contents.

Not a lot of him in color, except for the new Topps Vault posting.

Unless it's already been stolen.

Capless, but still showing him in his brief and final reemergence from the minors with Atlanta in 1970.

I think I see why I had some difficulty trying to ID these the usual way. Much appreciated.

Fixing a long-standing mistake

Several newer researchers have been going over the folders, and an old, long-standing mistake was found. In Folder AF, two images of this Cleveland Indian were square in the middle of Don Cardwell's run of over a dozen images. Since Cardwell never pitched for Cleveland, hard to say why these were stuck there all these years.

Who might this (AF901) be?

Bobby Thomson 1946 alternate uniform

Not a lot of him with the 1960 Red Sox, bar the Jay Publishing card, and nothing in color that I'd been aware of.

Topps, having been burnt by having to issue a Sox card with Thomson in Cubs mufti, told Bobby to skip the cap (and rightly so, he was released on July 1), but it's still something. Color corrections are my attempts, but I'm sure someone can improve.

Julio Navarro 1962

At the other end of "Whiplash" Navarro's career, here he is at Giants' camp (probably in 1962) while still toiling in the minors, prior to his sale to the Angels and the commencement of his big-league career.

Again, the attempt to remove the redness is my work, and not very good work on the second picture. Best I can do, though. Sorry.

Iván Murrell 1963 alternate uniform

Playing out the string with the 1974 Braves. I'd only seen the blurry Chicago shot before, so these nice San Francisco pics (David McWilliams?) are much better. (Although I did correct for brightness.)

Hey, scrub, get your hands off of Davey Johnson's #6 bat! Sheesh, no wonder Davey fell from 43 HRs in 1973 to 15 in '74; the spare parts were messing with his tools.

Bobby Thompson color correction.

Basically, using the color balance, you slide that sucker all the way over to blue (or most of the way, if they start looking too blue). You don't use the red color balance at all. That gets you the first image here. That's all I did for that one--slide it to blue; don't touch the red.

Ran it through a second time--again sliding towards blue (about a third of the way). Most noticeable change from that was getting the greens back on track

The third piece of evolution, here, is draining every last bit of red from the uniform only.

The final image is just increasing the saturation, and pumping the red and yellow up slightly (putting back some of what was removed).

No sky in this one, but, for future reference, I do sky like I do unis. Just remove all the red. Then there are plenty of ways to make it blue.

Hello…(Jeff) Newman

Some baby shots from the 1972 Indians camp (the second pic is one that appeared in a smaller size in the "II" folder, back when) and one of Jeff after making his ML debut with the 1976 A's, mostly to show off the AL Bicentennial sleeve patch.

Hello…(Fred) Newman

Confirmation as to the identity of the visiting team when Topps was shooting in Cleveland (for whatever reason) in September of 1965. And confirmation that it was September, as the Angels were still "Los Angeles" for most of that season.

The images are from 1966.

The Angels didn't change their "city/state" name until September 3, 1965, several weeks after the club's last visit to Cleveland (although there is some photographic evidence that the team had at least a prototype "CA" hat by the time of its trip to Detroit a week or two before the change).

Also, if Topps had photographed the Angels in CA caps in Cleveland in 1965 they would've used them in the 1966 card set. Newman, like nearly every other Angels player, appears capless or with a blacked out logo.

There are also several 1967 cards depicting the Angels in Municipal Stadium in Cleveland (Minnie Rojas comes to mind).

And - most easily for establishing a date for Topps images - remember that with the exception of some taken in San Francisco and a handful of others, ALL pre-1966 negatives "turned" to some degree into those awful red/brown discolored messes that ruin the otherwise great work. There is no explanation for this - could have been bad film stock, or bad storage, or who knows what - but even by 1967 the discoloration had begun and shows up on some cards. The 1967 Dave Boswell image - taken by Don Wingfield in Baltimore in 1965 - had already begun to go bad by the time Topps printed it less than two years later. There are a couple of later shoots - Brewers in spring training 1972 for instance - that have since gotten a little brown.

So rule of thumb: if the colors are natural, the odds are 99% that the image is 1966 or later. And if they aren't, the odds are 99% it's from 1965 or before.
