I said nothing about managing or broadcasting or baseball. He was one of the great Americans of the 20th Century, and as modest about it as imaginable.

Jerry Coleman was amazing. I feel fortunate to have met him once and shook his hand. From Wiki:

Lieutenant Colonel Coleman was a Marine aviator who postponed his entry into professional baseball in World War II and later left baseball to serve in the Korean War. While a Marine Corps aviator he flew 120 combat missions (57 during WWII and 63 in Korea) and received numerous honors and medals including two Distinguished Flying Crosses. In recent years Coleman received numerous honors; including, being inducted into the USMC Sports Hall of Fame, for his call to duty. Coleman was the only Major League Baseball player to have seen combat in two wars. (While Ted Williams served during both WWII and Korea, he flew combat missions only in the Korean war.)

Von Joshua

While I was looking for pictures of Jerry Coleman (pursuant to a request in the Manager thread), I came across a series of sheets issued in 1980 by the Family Fun Center (or some such). It was a completed offering on eBay (seller fargenblue). Looks like, if you're missing any Padres from like 78-81, those are what you should be looking for.

Anyway, the sheets are 6 players each, so separating Von Joshua out from the listing image makes him a little smaller than you might like. But it'll do until the real thing comes along. (and, yes, I've added these sheets to my want list, so I'll be watching the Bay and, if I ever get any, I'll post the larger scans for any who care)

Sievers

Roy Sievers, who clubbed 318 home runs between 1949 and 1965, is now listed as the youngest man on
Wikipedia's 100 oldest living major leaguers list. Ranked at #100, Sievers is 88 years and 10 months old.

Third photo down (BN 213 appears to be catcher, Bobby Estalella (Phillies). He was a Phillie between 1996 to 1999. He also played for the giants, Yankees and Rockies through 2003. His grandfather (also named (Bobby Estalella) was also a major leaguer (1935-1949).

ID's

From the top:

Mark DeRosa
Michael Cuddyer
(Deferring to the Estalella ID. No idea, too recent)
Gary Blaylock 1959
Bud Bloomfield 1964

The Bloomfield shot does not look a thing like his only appearance on a Topps card (1964 Twins Rookies). That's because the photo on the card is wrong - it depicts Jay Ward.

The former Twins and Reds infielder/Yankees and Expos hitting coach, not the creator of Rocky and Bullwinkle. Although that would have been kinda cool.

I tried to Google this, but it resisted whatever Boolean ninja skills I possess.

Has anyone ever created a list/tribute blog/some kind of sad memorial for guys who had one baseball card and that card featured the wrong guy? Besides poor Bud Bloomfield, I can think of Sherman Jones's '61 card.

I mean, it's not the Bill Sharman Society, but it's also not a club of which one wants to be a member.

Sherman Jones?

The guy on Sherman Jones' only baseball card is Sherman Jones. Long ago somebody inaccurately proclaimed that the card actually depicted someone else (usually Eddie Fisher). But it's Jones.

Scott Northey - 1969 Royals

Taken from the White Sox in the expansion draft, outfielder Scott Northey was a September call-up for the Royals in 1969. He got into 20 games and hit .262 (following a .327 average in Omaha). Northey never made it back to The Show after that.

Wayne Nordhagen 1976

Don't know that I've ever seen Nordhagen in his 15-game farewell with the '83 Cubs - what a shock: Topps shot him.

Another rare image, of a short-term lefty reliever from the Giants of the 1978-80 era:

On the left. You don't see a lot of him. Not sure who the other guy is ;-)

There were also some intriguing minor leaguers posted by Topps today, who will be posted on that thread.
