Tomas Calvo
Tomas Calvo was an outfielder and catcher with the Long Branch (NJ) Cubans and Jersey City Cubans during the 1915-16 period. He signed with the Boston Red Sox in 1912, but never made the big leagues, unlike his younger brother Jacinto "Jack."

Raymond Aguillard
Raymond Aguillard, OF, is shown as an older man in a Detroit Stars uniform. I'm not sure which year he was with the Stars, but I think it was around 1958. He was in the Chicago Cubs' minor league system in 1956 and 1957. Regarding Negro League ball, he also played for the Kansas City Monarchs.

Another Progress Report
On December 11, I presented a progress report in which it was indicated that the participants in this thread had posted images of about 1,900 Negro League players, managers, executives, and umpires; and that that number amounted to about 43% of the estimated universe. My count of postings now stands at 2,064 players, managers, etc., but the total has slipped to only 41% of the universe. How can that be?
I have now gone through the complete Seamheads.com database looking for Negro League players and managers I had not known about when building my database of those associated with the Negro Leagues. After completing that exercise, my total number of players, managers, executive, and umpires in the Negro Leagues currently stands at slightly above 5,000. The Seamheads.com database currently does not go any later than the year 1936. It is an ongoing project which continually has work underway, so there will be future additions to this database, and we can expect that there will be more individuals found who were associated with the Negro Leagues. I've been in communications with both Larry Lester of the Clark/Lester Negro Baseball Register and Gary Ashwill of Seamheads.com in an attempt to learn how to reconcile differences in the players listed between the two databases. I don't think I can completely make reconciliations. The Clark/Lester Register was built quite a few years ago, and the Seamheads database was built from the ground up (using box scores) without referencing the Clark/Lester Register, so they took two different approaches. The Seamheads database contains players who played in games 1) between black professional teams in the US, 2) in the Cuban Leagues, and 3) between the Cuban Leagues and the major leagues. I didn't pick up the players from categories 2) and 3) -- exception: two Cuban teams which were actually in the Negro Leagues. The Clark/Lester data base includes players with black professional US teams who played against minor league teams, white semi-pro teams, etc., so it contains some players who are not in the Seamheads data base. I saw some Negro League teams in the Seamheads data base which I had not seen mentioned in the Clark/Lester database. Examples are the San Antonio Bronchos, Buxton Wonders, the 1915 Havana Reds, and the 1915 Almendares Cubans. Last edited by Cusick; 02-20-2015 at 06:52 PM. Reason: Spelling error. |

Juan Eckelson was a pitcher with the 1925 Cuban Stars. A photo of him with the Cuban Stars has been posted previously on this thread, but this photo is a much clearer representation of him. He is seen here in the uniform of the Havana Lions.

Fred Downer
Fred Downer was an outfielder with the Pittsburgh Keystones and Baltimore Black Sox in 1921. Following his baseball days, he became the owner of three newstands in Chicago. Fred was originally from Royston, Georgia, as was Ty Cobb. The August 27, 1953 issue of Jet Magazine reports on Cobb giving Downer a hug at Wrigley Field when they encountered each other.

Jimmy Claxton
Here's another photo of Jimmy Claxton, who pitched for the Cuban Stars in 1932, and who was the only Afro-American in the minor leagues in the first half of the 20th Century prior to the 1940's. This shows him with the 1914 Hubbard Colored Giants (Portland, OR). It comes from John Thorn's blog -- Our Game.

Felix Delgado
I've been looking for an image of Felix "Felle" Delgado, who played with the 1941 New York Cubans in the Negro Leagues, but also had a long career before that with the Cuban Stars and the San Juan Senators and, afterwards, served as a Latin American scout for the Brewers. Cusick posted an image about 50 pages back, but not one that would work well for my purposes. Hopefully, these images I've found since may represent an upgrade to some. Original (tiny, tiny, teeny, tiny, tiny) size first and blown up as best I could second, we have...
1) A small head shot of Felix (which I didn't blow up) from the online Negro Leagues Baseball eMuseum, 2) Felix with the San Juan Senators and 3) Felix with the New York Cubans (in the latter, Felix is on the left, followed by Carlos Blanco and Carlos Colas). |
