John Gochnaur 1901

Gochnaur was a terrible hitter, somehow keeping the starting shortstop job with Cleveland for 2 years...probably because they couldn't find anyone else.

Charlie Hickman 1897

Charlie "Piano Legs" Hickman was a very good hitter in the deadball era, but he just couldn't figure the fielding aspect out. He was especially terrible at third base, finishing with a career fielding average of .844.

Family Fun and Fritsch, FYI

The Padres "Family Fun Center" issues from 1978 and 1979 are perforated sheets of cards. The 1980 and 1981 sheets are just that - sheets.

An important note about One Year Winners. Other than the short, black and white first series that depicts players of the early '50s, all the cards feature photos from Topps. They were loaned by the then Sports Editor, prominent collector Bill Haber, to his friend, trading partner, and client Larry Fritsch.

Same thing went for the 1982 Renata Galasso set of Seattle Pilots (though it features some photos from George Brace). The since dispersed photo archive also confirmed that Topps far more formally provided the images (and often the airbrushing) for the 1964 Wheaties stamps set, the 1968-70 Transogram sets, and the 1975-79 Hostess sets.

Jack McCarthy 1893

Pictured here with the 1902 Cleveland team, McCarthy had played for several teams, most notably with the early 1890s Cincinnati Reds and the Cubs right before they became good.

Jack Thoney 1902

Played mostly with the Red Sox, but here is Thoney in his rookie season with the 1902 Cleveland team.

Here is American League batting champion Ed Delahanty in his second to last season (1902) before his tragic death.

Jimmy Ryan 1885

Also in his second-to-last season, Ryan had a strong year finishing with a .320 average. Should be a Hall of Famer.

Great baseball nickname, Clarke was one of the catchers on the dominant 1890s Baltimore Orioles. Here he is pictued with the 1902 Washington team.

I'll post some more of these at some point but I wanted to get Von Joshua up, since someone had specifically requested him.

Nope. The flag was at half mast in memory of members of the U.S. Olympic boxing team who died in a plane crash. With crew and passengers, 87 people died in the crash. 22 were members of the boxing team. Six of those boxers were from California.

Odd Request - Sam Jones No Hitter 5-12-1955

An added bonus of this thread in addition to great historic images is the fascinating background stories and informational tidbits that are shared. Although I could certainly request images of Sam Jones, what I am really trying to locate is a recording of his no hitter.

To find the entire radio broadcast of his no hitter game is probably impossible but perhaps the incredible 9th inning might be. Anyway, that is what I would like to find. Not just the strike outs, but the play by play of the entire 9th inning. I can't imagine any other game could have been as fascinating as that final inning.

So for all of you historians out there; do you know if a recording exists? Or can you say with almost certainty that none does exist?

Thank you,
Jeff

There are literally hundreds of games on tape dating back to the early '30s. A few highlights still dribble out of The Miley Collection (Nolan Ryan's first start, or the 1973 "Dave Augustine" game as recent examples; and in video it should be noted that the Larsen perfect game and Mazeroski's homer each came to light in the last six years), but the 'special' games that exist are largely out there and the Jones game is not among them.

There is always a chance a copy lies undiscovered, or is in private hands and for some reason being held back - there is a recording of the last seven-and-a-half innings of Koufax's perfect game that has never been made generally available - but the likelihood is very very small.

Thanks Merk! I appreciate the response. I thought that might be the case but wanted to ask just to see what you might know. Again, thank you sir.

Jim Foor 1971

Only the second image I've seen of the onetime Tiger pitching prospect who made a cameo with the Pirates at the end of the 1973 season - he faced exactly eight batters in a Pittsburgh uniform. The image is from the Bucs' 1974 Spring Training scorecard:

Hard-to-find Brave Randy O'Neal

Showing up in the GU folder is a hard to find Brave, pitcher Randy O'Neal (1987). He appeared in only 16 games for the Braves (10 starts) after a January deal from the Tigers -- to late to catch him in a 1987 Topps Card, thenrs he was dealt to Cardinals in July.

O'Neal was 4-2, 5.61, which sounds about right for the '87 Braves.
