I'm well aware that the B&W appears in Bouton's book (and would presume that Merkle is as well). The B&W.

The COLOR image--which is different than the B&W--had never ever been seen before until about 2011 or 2012. The B&W is readily available, as I said in my post. The color image is utterly unavailable.

I suspect the Pilots only ordered black & white prints from that shoot (cheaper than color). And those b&w pictures made the rounds through concession sales and press materials and then reproductions. They are clearly out there in numbers. The B&W. Merkle's point was that there were NO known COLOR images of Garry Roggenburk (or Gordy Lund) as a Pilot....until this very small jpeg surfaced just a few years ago (we always knew, or suspected, that the B&W team photo was the only existing image of Garry as a Pilot at all).

But, with the surfacing of the small color jpeg, we now know that such an image exists and we are all hopeful that a larger/full size COLOR image can be tracked down. Clearly, the shoot was in color. We didn't know this before. (The "other" team picture has always been out there in color, so nobody went looking for this one in color.)

Imagine discovering (all these years after the fact), via a tiny jpeg online, that the team issued head shot of Billy Williams was originally shot in color (it wasn't). Even if it was otherwise the same picture as the B&W, would it not be newsworthy? Would you not then want to get a full-sized image of the color head shot of Williams? This is sort of like that.

I posted the B&W team image so people could see the faces (my eyes are shot; all I see in the smaller color picture is a big blob). And also to point out that the color image is likely an outtake and, therefore, not available through the usual suspects; you won't see it turning up on eBay and people associated with the team probably never saw it (other than on a contact sheet, if that).

EDIT: OK. Just did a little roaming around online and discovered that the posted color image that I had found (posted to the net in 2011) is part of the David Eskenazi collection. He's a SABR member, a collector, and a writer. If that helps anyone shake loose the original, God bless you.

While on the name Osteen and after seeing a few pics of Claude as a Dodger recently posted on T.V., might anyone have a nice color pic of him as an Astro from 1974? I've seen multiple colorized and photo shopped versions, as well as a color one that seemed like it was taken on a very dreary Spring day at Wrigley. Would be great to confirm what else might be there out for the pride of Reading, OH.

Thanks!

Brian Ostrosser - 1973 Mets

5 at bats without a hit for the 1973 Mets. I should have brightened these a bit before posting, but I was literally too shocked at seeing him coming out of the vault.

IT HAS HAPPENED!

Sorry. Just that Ostrosser is one of the ultimate Mets white whales.

C'mon, Topps, now that you've given us Ostrosser and Daviault, tell me someone in Duryea just found a previously overlooked folder full of Greg Harts and Al Schmelz snaps....

Phil Ouellette 1986

Now THIS is a white whale. There are at least three good color images of Ostrosser, including a McCarthy.

Ouellette, a Giants' catcher for about three weeks in 1986, has never been seen in color in an SF Uni before.

Topps did not shoot Harts or Schmelz. I posted Schmelz here: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ml#post3615021

An IF sub for the Cubs from 1983 to 1985 (85 games, .201 Ave.). In December 1985, was traded to the Giants for Manny Trillo. Never played for them...released during Spring Training 1986.

Short-term pitcher with the Angels. Shares a mass rookie card, otherwise there aren't color major league images of him in circulation - until now.

Jim Otten 1974

A few images at the end of his career with the Cardinals have emerged but these are the first with the White Sox - and only in the throwback uniforms Bill Veeck produced in 1976. His rookie card from '77 is neither fish nor fowl. It's a '76-77 style blue cap and shirt horribly airbrushed onto a '74-75 red-based Chicago uniform. This one, at least, is the real throwback deal.

Jim Owens 1955

Plenty of the long-time reliever with the Phillies and Astros (for whom he also coached) but this is one of the first I've seen from his first year in Houston, when they were still the Colts.

Dennis O'Toole 1969

Younger brother of Reds' stalwart Jim O'Toole and heretofore seen pretty much exclusively in the light blue White Sox teams for whom he played in 1969 and 1970. But he lingered with Chicago for the first three years of the red pinstripes and here Topps shows him in those.

I think this is Jim Owens, not O'Toole

I have a good color shot somewhere, think it came from dr.jteeee. I'll find and post tomorrow.

And while we are on the 82 White Sox, I am still looking for a larger version of this shot of Steve Dillard: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ml#post2434063
