The eyebrows are right, but it'd be the first photo I've seen of Hood without a 'stache.

Does that make it rare? Or just harder to ID?

It's Hood, most likely in spring training 1972. Pictures of him with a naked upper lip aren't all that uncommon. Here are a few.

Second clue, in the Topps GJ series alphabetic order, he comes after Bill and Craig Robinson, and before Aurelio Rodriguez. There was a Robert Robinson, nicknamed Smokey (sic), a 1968 1st round Draft choice (18th) by the Tigers, who never appeared in a MLB game, but played 8 years in the Tigers farm system. I went on Ebay and found that 1973 Toledo Mud Hens pic of Smokey. It seems to be our guy!!
The above information is correct. Robert Murray (Smokey) Robinson.
This was the Major League Spring Training picture (1973). The Toledo Mud Hens picture was during the 1973 season.

Errata, TV style

Much to my aggrivation but ultimate relief, myself and others have fumbled some of the ID's along the way. But fellow researcher gilligantuan (no, I don't know what it means) has been gathering the TV images in folders BY NAME, making it very apparent when something is misidentified. I want tolay these to rest ASAP, beginnng with mega folder BC:

BC263 isn't Bud Daley...
Name: BC263.jpg
Views: 1052
Size: 18.5 KB

BC1430 doesn't appear to be Bob Bowman...
Name: BC1430.jpg
Views: 1045
Size: 18.1 KB

Pretty sure that neither 2281 or 2296 is Bob Stinson
Name: BC2281.jpg
Views: 1040
Size: 25.1 KB

Name: BC2296.jpg
Views: 1039
Size: 32.4 KB

And for a fifth, the final image in HE not ID'd (373)
Name: HE373.jpg
Views: 1052
Size: 60.1 KB

And I never want to leave off a thank-you to all.

BC1430 Bill Smith (Billy on his 1963 Topps...same pic)
HE373 Al Lakeman

BC273 looks like Jim Archer and wild wild guesses for the 2 catchers..Larry Haney and Hawk Taylor.

Sogge!

Thank goodness we have folks willing to give these a second look.
I am tickled about this ID (BC2281). How many trivia addled members of this thread remember that Sogge was best known as being O.J. Simpson's quarterback at USC?

As for Jones, he is a total mystery to me. Not as a player, not as a draft pick, not in BB Reference. Can anyone shed any light on a guy who I still thinks looks like Hawk Taylor?

Typo!

Conflated my 1969 minor league catchers (Johnny Jones and Tommy Smith). Corrected. That's Tommy Smith.

Although Merkle has corrected the photo ID to Tommy Smith, in case you are still interested in Johnny Jones, he was a catcher on the Houston Astros' 1969 spring roster. His Baseball-reference record is at Johnny Jones Register Statistics & History | Baseball-Reference.com

His photo is attached.

One last Orlando Pena 1958

In a year-appropriate uniform of the '62 Athletics (although this clearly dates to spring training '63 or '64, and the photographer hadn't yet nailed that whole "camera editing" thing).

And no, Topps did not post him with Cincinnati. I don't think they actually ever got him in a Reds' uniform.

Roberto Pena 1965

Noticed a google image search of the light hitting infielder with the Cubs produces only his Topps cards. He's been posted today, as well.

I had a free minute so I did a quick color correction...

Ray Daviault 1962 -- Topps envelope

Thought those of you who are Topps junkies like me might get a kick out of this: I won one of the eBay Daviault auctions and got his envelope along with the slabbed negative. Interesting!
