Ken Phelps 1980
Not a lot of the DH Deluxe and personification of bad Yankee trades of the '80s and '90s in his original Kansas City uni - Topps put up two today

Not the first we've seen of him in a Seattle uniform (1977) but pretty good. The absence of a Detroit shot (1976) supports what I saw years ago in the archives - they didn't get him with the Tigers.

Pedro Hernandez 1979
This always struck me as one of the stranger stories of the expansion era. In September 1979, the Blue Jays promoted a 20-year old shortstop from their Class-A farm team in the Carolina League. Pedro Hernandez got three pinch-running opportunities, and then went back to the minors in 1980.
Having shown no power, very little speed, not much in the field, and only once exceeding an OPS of .700 in the minors, Hernandez was summoned back to Toronto in July, 1982. This time he got nine plate appearances and a couple of innings each at 3B and LF. He went 0-for-9 and started exactly one game (at DH), and was first sent back to the minors, then sold into the Yankees' farm system in late August. He played just a few games for them at Columbus, then is next heard from two years later in the Mexican League, and the year after at two stops in the Astros' system - and done at age 26. Haven't seen Hernandez in color and in a Jays' uniform before. These images are part of a large collection I bought recently and are both from a Toronto exhibition game at their then-AAA farm, Syracuse, in 1982. I have three. I got these from an early version of the Baseball-Birthdays site, four years ago.

Sadly not in his Oakland uniform in his lone major league season (1977) - though Topps did shoot him in that jersey - but at least in big league garb during his stay in the KC system.

Any images out there of Quirk with either the White Sox or Indians?

1883 St. Louis Browns ID help
I believe this was labeled as the 1883 squad, though I'm not 100 % sure of that. That being said, I could use some help with IDs on the players. A young Comiskey is on the left, and I think Hugh Nicol is below him. Though there aren't a lot of good pics of him, I'm guessing the player holding the ball is Jumbo McInnis.

Jamie Quirk Cleveland Indians 1984

Unfortunately, just because there should be a good shot of Quirk with the Tribe does not necessarily mean that one exists. This is all I have found so far, a B&W news shot from the Chicago Tribune. |

Jamie Quirk 1975 UIN Indians
Can't claim that this is a good photo, but at least the Indians' logo can be seen in it. It's from the Cleveland Plain Dealer of September 28, 1984. The game when he hit his homer against the Twins must have been on September 27.

Took me three days to finally recognize this guy - never seen him in an A's uniform, in which he performed for just the first five games of his major league career.

Jamie Quirk, Home Run Hero
I hang my head in shame for not knowing the story about The Quirk Home Run. I followed Quirk as closely as I could in the pre-internet days during the final part of his career after he returned to KC. He was a true ballplayer. I have my own Jamie Quirk collection of all his cards and a number of autos. These two images will now be included as the only shots I've ever seen of him with the Tribe. Here's hoping he gets a MLB managerial shot someday soon.

Anyone have an image of Ryan Kurosaki on the Cardinals? Can't find anything except for his Arkansas Travelers minor league cards.

I can't thank you guys enough. I've lurked here for quite awhile, finding photos for guys that never had any cards to make custom cards for my own collection. Found out a couple of weeks ago that Kurosaki's grandmother-in-law and my grandmother were sisters.
