Jim Castiglia 1942
I think your unidentified Philadelphia Athletic is catcher Jim Castiglia. The eye and mouth shapes seem to be the same. Although he only played with the A's during the regular season in 1942, he was also on their spring training roster in 1946. The photo of Castiglia from my collection is on the left. Your unidentified photo is on the right.
Castiglia also played pro football with the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins. He was a fullback. Last edited by Cusick; 11-25-2015 at 08:03 AM. Reason: Corrected typo which had omitted the prefix in the word "unidentified." |

Martinez' "other" 1972 team
A TV image of Marty Martinez' third team of 1972, the Rangers, is on page 901 of this thread.

Mike Fischlin - Astros
A tough one to find - I think I've only ever seen one other color photo of him with the Astros. Courtesy of a new eBay listing from Kyle's Sportscards.

Jeff Fischer 1987
From the same eBay seller, the drive-by Dodger pitcher (September 1989, two games) who had broken in for four games with the 1987 Expos.

And question about the locale and the pics themselves. I understand Kyle might have obtained these rare gems, however I was curious, do we know any back story on the source that took all the photos?
Again just curious.....Thanks in advance! |

Happy Holidays (Jack Lamabe 1962)
As mentioned a few weeks ago, I recently acquired a massive collection of '50s-'60s images which contained a startling number of obscure guys, or somewhat obscure guys in obscure uniforms.
I'll be rolling a few dozen of these between now and the end of the year and we'll start with the veteran relief pitcher (and later longtime college coach) Jack Lamabe, who had the greatest of up-and-down years in 1967. He began it in the bullpen of the White Sox, who would be in the A.L. pennant race. He then went to the last of the truly awful Met teams of the '60s as one of the then-record 27 pitchers they used in '67. But he pitched well against the Cardinals (including spreading five hits and no walks over seven innings in a spot start in July) and they obtained him. He ended up with a World Series ring and the dubious-but-far-better-than-nothing experience of mopping up in each of the Cardinals' three Series losses to Boston. Images of Lamabe in a Cardinal or Cub (traded there in late April 1968) uniform are few and far between but both were included in the collection. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-02-2017 at 09:16 PM. |

Vincent Maney 1912 - returned to missing list
SABR has determined that Vincent Maney, one of the players in the 18-May-1912 Ty Cobb strike game, is not the same person as Patrick Meaney, the long-time minor leaguer. The only photo we had of Maney comes from a 1904 San Francisco Seals team composite and actually shows Meaney. I have returned Maney to the missing list until we find a confirmed photo.

Alan Schmelz 1967
Posted previously in the form of a snapshot taken of the negative on a light board. The portrait is from Spring Training 1967 and the action shot from Spring Training 1968.
Schmelz's key claim to fame might be (or might have been) the absence of any posed color photos of him in a Mets' uniform. Topps didn't get him, J.D. McCarthy didn't get him, the Mets didn't get him (in color, anyway, except in the 1967 Spring Training team picture). But in fact he was one of the first stars from the Arizona State baseball factory of the '60s and '70s to reach the majors, and he was on the school's College World Series champs in 1965. He also played for the Alaska Goldpanners, and played varsity basketball at ASU. At last report he was hale and hearty and living in Arizona after a successful career in construction, and there's also photographic evidence of him participating in some Mets fantasy camps. And now there's photographic evidence that he pitched three sold innings for the '67 Mets: Last edited by Merkle923; 08-02-2017 at 09:16 PM. |

Under the heading of useless but still proud tidbits of information offered for at least this forum member: Alan apparently was not on ASU's squad that made it to the school's first CWS the previous year in 1964, like then fellow Sun Devil sophomore Sal Bando. That team spawned what ended up being the initial building blocks of quite a dominant program. In ASU's first ever CWS game of '64, they were shut out by a Missouri team that went on the lose in the finals against Minnesota. My dad played on that Mizzou squad and I'm very thankful that I still get to hear him tell some ball stories.....Here's to a great pastime.

Tom Carroll 1955
One of the first victims of Baseball's short-sighted "Bonus Rule," Tommy Carroll was signed by the Yankees out of Notre Dame in 1955 and because of the amount of money they gave him in those pre-draft days, he had to spend two seasons on the New York roster.
He was 18. While this gave him the opportunity to appear in the 1955 World Series as a pinch-runner at the age of 19, it also limited him to 50 games and just 24 plate appearances in his age 18 and 19 seasons (he was in the starting lineup exactly twice). He would only manage .248 in the minors and left the game after the 1960 season to join the U.S. State Department and later serve as a diplomat in a series of Latin American nations. When the Yankees finally bailed out on him in April of 1959, they dealt him to (who else) the A's. I've never seen him in color in their uniform before, yet there he was, in that collection I mentioned: Last edited by Merkle923; 08-02-2017 at 09:16 PM. |

Phil Mankowski
The absence of quality Phil Mankowski as a Met photos never made sense to me. I mean, he was with them from 1980-1982 (albeit mostly in Tidewater). The Vault gave us two today.

I do not recall seeing Aurelio Lopez with the Royals on this thread before...but, I was looking for a pic of him to add to my 1976 season. The Astros needed an arm at AAA so I am purchasing Lopez from Mexico. Anyway, I discovered this photo of Lopez with the Royals on Dr. JTeee e-bay shop....Lopez pitched in 8 games for the 1974 Royals....

Jimy Williams 1966
For those of us who remember Jimy (That's "Jimy" With One "M") Williams as the classic old-school, gruff, wrinkled, puffy-looking manager of the Jays, Red Sox, or Astros, it is sometimes hard to believe that he was once such an infield prospect that the Cardinals not only drafted him after he'd played just 115 minor league games, but kept him on the major league roster beyond the May cutdown date and all the way until his induction into the military in late July, 1966.
Williams only appeared in the field seven times that season, and only made a dozen plate appearances. The Cards brought him back in September, 1967, and even though the pennant was clinched on the 18th of that month, he got in only one more major league game three days later. That winter, St. Louis packaged him and Pat Corrales to get Johnny Edwards from the Reds. A year later he was the Expos' 15th pick in the expansion draft (ahead of such selectees as Mudcat Grant, Carl Morton, Cito Gaston, the pitching Dave Roberts, and the outfielder Jim Williams). Two years later his playing career was over, and three years after that his managerial career had begun. Despite his full season in St. Louis, the only easily found image of him in a Cardinals' uniform is a tiny cocked-arm photo on a 1966 Topps three-player rookie card. There are at least as many images of Williams with the Alaska Goldpanners as there are with the Cards. Thus my delight when one single negative turned up in this collection, of Williams leaping out of the way of Ed Bressoud of the Mets during a spring training in 1966. There's a little flaw line in the negative but otherwise you'll agree it's good enough to double as an action image and a head shot. Enjoy. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-02-2017 at 09:17 PM. |

Phil Mankowski 1976
Besides filling the Met Mankowski void yesterday, Topps Vault also filled the Tiger Mankowski one. All that remains is a nice posed image of Mankowski playing the New York Knights' third baseman Hank Benz in "The Natural."
