Mike White 1963
Less blah blah, more photos ;-)
Mike White - son of the platoon center fielder of the A.L. Champion Tigers of 1934-35 - played a little second base for the 1963 Colts, about half a season in the outfield in '64, and then one game at third for the '65 Astros. He got on to two Topps cards but both times in full .45 garb. I've never seen him with the in-season Astro "H" star but 'the' collection produced a 1965 Spring Training shot with the intermediate plain star. I was reminded last week that those temporary caps probably owe to the fact that in renaming the team in the off-season of 1964-65, Roy Hofheinz chose between two names: Astros and Stars. These hats would've suited either choice! Last edited by Merkle923; 08-02-2017 at 11:06 PM. |

The lack of a watermark indicates Topps posted this before it switched to higher resolution scans. So unless you find whoever bought the Kelly negative, that's probably the best you'll get.

Pat Kelly
Here's a few of PK. I met Brother Pat back in 1990-95. He was at a local church preaching. He became a full-time evangelist after he retired from bball after the 1981 season. He autographed a Bible tract and the underside of a 1975-8? cap visor for me. The kids loved him!

Jim Brenneman 1965
Looks to me like there are images of this brief Yankee pitcher in the TCMA '60s set and the Fritsch One Year Winners set (using a 1966 Topps negative), but no others.
In any event, in our nightly dip into 'the' collection, here is Brenneman at a New York Spring Training. He made three relief appearances during two weeks in July, 1965, but had actually started - and won - a game for the Yankees in New York the year before. Brenneman was summoned from the minors to start the then-annual Mayor's Trophy Game in front of 55,000 at Shea Stadium in August, 1964. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-02-2017 at 11:06 PM. |

A Phillies Star who sold Christmas Trees: Willie Jones
A column by Philadelphia Inquirer writer, Frank Fitzpatrick yesterday, Sunday, December 20, 2015
reminds us that we are not too far removed from the era when baseball players needed to find a second job for the offseason. Willie "Puddinhead" Jones was not above taking a manual labor job, selling Christmas Trees, during the holiday season, unloading trees from trucks, standing them up to display them, lifting them, tying them to customers' car roofs etc. .... and Jones salary certainly exceeded the average major leaguer's by quite a bit. He was a two-time N.L. all-star third baseman (1950,1951), who had some power (190 home runs lifetime with a season high of 25 HR one year), and was regarded as the National League's best fielding third baseman early in his career (unfortunately he was past his prime at age 32 in 1957 when the Gold Glove Award for fielding excellence was inaugurated). Jones played 15 years in the majors, 1947-1961, the first 13 seasons with the Phillies and he also played for the Indians and Reds. Jones was posthumously elected to the Phillies' Wall Of Fame, their team hall of fame, in 1995. Last edited by KenRaffensberger16; 12-21-2015 at 12:14 PM. |

Don Rader 1913
The Zeenut card on the left shows him with the Venice, California, team of the Pacific Coast League, with whom he played in 1915. The Zeenut card on the right shows him with the Portland, Oregon, team of the PCL, with whom he played in 1919.

Trust but Verify
Have noticed quite a few misnamed images in the eBay TV listings of late.
In the most recent batch, there are four Don McMahon images posted as "Don Mahon" and two of the Mariners' John Hale listed as "John McHale" (which explains why Hale was posted in the Ms). Last edited by rico43; 12-22-2015 at 03:57 PM. |

Vic Power 1954 (in 1964)
Ever seen this before? Power during his 18-game cameo with the 1964 Phillies. Tripped over this, hiding in plain sight at SABR! 1964 Phillies, Fans, and Media | SABR
Power went to the Phils on September 9, 1964 (just in time for the collapse) and then back to L.A. in November. I think all that's missing for Power is a shot of him in a California (not LA) Angel cap from September, 1965, or spring training 1966. |

At long last - I do believe we have Scott Meyer of the 1978 A's in the Topps Vault today.

Gary Kroll 1964
I don't think I've posted the second image before (if I'm wrong, my apologies in advance) and nothing comes up with a google search for this player and this team.
Having made almost no impression in the Phillies system or with the Mets (although he was mocked with various nicknames for wearing his hair long - at least long for 1965), Gary Kroll was traded to Houston in 1966 for original Colt 45 Johnny Weekly. His ten relief appearances were the closest thing to a successful stop in his four-year, three-team career. The first shot is from 'the' collection, Kroll in Spring Training 1965 with the Mets, and the second, a J.D. McCarthy image of Kroll taken in spring training in March, 1966 (check out the star on the sock!) Last edited by Merkle923; 08-02-2017 at 11:18 PM. |

Here are a few from UIN list. Not great as they were taken from videos but better than nothing.
