Another (non-Topps) Vault

With the pending demise of the Baseball-Birthdays site in mid-January, I took to exploring some of the non-TV zip files that have been saved and largely ignored since 2012. Under the heading of "Lexibell" I found a treasure trove of apparent publicity photos. Posting just the one here, and if anyone knows this to be a protected item, I will take it down immediately. But there are literally thousands of them there.

Three Yankees of Note

A wirephoto from the late, great United Press International. Found in another nearly forgotten zip file on Baseball-Birthdays.

Evelio Hernandez 1956

Evelio Hernandez died on December 18, about a week short of his 85th birthday, which would have been celebrated today. In determining his age, I'm using the birthdate given in his obituary, which was December 24, 1930. Both Baseball-reference.com and Retrosheet list his birth year as 1931. The photo of him in a Washington Senators uniform comes from the book BASEBALL MEMORIES 1950-1959, by Marc Okkonen.

Anyone with a image of Hal Toenes

William H Toenes played for the Senators in 1947. Any photo with some image quality would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

As far as the Baseball Birthdays site goes, my impression is that the site creator, John, is simply retiring from the site. He has given us a month's notice, so I don't think it's any kind of forced shutdown.

Lexibell link

The Lexibell ZIPs are at Baseball Birthdays Forum - Login. Lots of fun things, but you've got to dig.

One amusing photo I found -- Hal Reniff and Phil Linz with the Mets. Hoping I find a decent-sized photo of the two Bob Millers in there somewhere.

(Reds) Captain Billy Myers

Found this sharp photo in a Lexibell folder on Baseball Birthdays. This photo was labeled "about 1940," which would have been Myers' final season with the Reds. Named the Reds' captain for the 1935 season, he had a love/hate relationship with the Cincy fans in part due to a horrid 1939 World Series (the Lombardi snooze series) in which the Reds were swept 4-0. They won again in 1940, but Myers was frequently the target of boos by the home crowd. He actually walked away from the team on the eve of the World Series, but was talked into returning. He drove in the winning run in the eighth inning of Game 7 for the Reds, then was traded to the Cubs. Named to the Reds Hall of Fame in 1966.

First time poster -- medium time lurker.

It was that Linz Reniff image that finally compelled me to pull the trigger and join up here. That's a King Korn promotional shot. King sponsored the Mets in the 1960's and in the second half of the decade, would stage these photo ops where, typically, one Met would present what would appear to be a money sack of King Korn stamps to another Met. I've seen that style photo shoot with Cleon Jones, Ed Charles, Bud Harrelson, Ken Boyer, Ron Taylor, Wes Westrum and others I'm probably forgetting. I've seen that Linz/Reniff shot as well. Love it.

Happy Holidays

Whether it's a holiday or not, seeing the latest wonders on this site makes me happy -- for myself if the new discoveries are rare Mets, for others if they're not. In either case, thank you for all that you contribute and for your generosity with discoveries and history alike.

May your days be filled with white whales surfacing to linger in the highest of resolutions....

Tom Underwood 1974 (in 1977)

Merry Christmas!

So, it's not in color - that will have to await some future archaeologist. But until this (black and) white whale popped up the other day I had no idea the Cardinals had actually made one of their famous team-issued postcards, and I have a very large collection of them.

Again, no reason to believe there's a Topps image of Underwood in color (had there been, they would've used it and not an airbrushed Phillies shot on his 1978 card). There's nothing in the collection of Doug McWilliams (who shot for Topps in the Bay Area at the time, and for himself) in the Baseball Hall of Fame Photo Library. No color McCarthy image has ever turned up. But at least this is better than that ungainly game action shot from his win at Shea Stadium on August 10, 1977. Enjoy.

Jesse Jeffersons

From the aforementioned Lexibell ZIPs, some Jesse Jefferson photos. Doubt they're anything new or earthshaking and apologies if any are repeats, but just in case....

Pete Burnside 1955

Don't know that I've ever seen him in color in a New York Giants' uniform.

Burnside had a rough time at four different stops in the majors, so his status as the '50s equivalent of an elite prospect is all but forgotten. So's his education. Burnside had just finished his freshman year at Dartmouth when the Giants signed him in 1949. He not only got his degree in 1952 but after his pitching career ended in Japan in 1965 he got a master's at Northwestern and then proceeded to teach and coach at his old high school until his retirement in the early '90s.
