Old Style Baseball Cards

I'm working on putting together a comprehensive virtual set of 1978 Topps. To create the cards, I simply used the Microsoft Paint program. There's probably something more sophisticated out there, but Paint seems to do the trick pretty well - it should work very well for you as the 1951 and 1952 Bowman sets are pretty square. It might not work on sets with more elaborate designs (think 1960, 1962, 1972, or 1980 Topps). As it is, with the 1978 set, I still am not where I want to be with the look of the team name, but I think I've finally managed to produce good looking position designators/baseballs.

Anyway, it's as simple as cutting out an appropriate-sized portion of the image you're working with and placing it in an existing card template - for me, I use the images available at the Baseball Card Cyber Museum (Sign In) as my starting point.

As for the image itself, I use the Corel Paintshop Pro program if I need to eliminate flaws on the photo. But for the most part, the Paint program works well on its own. Good luck with your efforts! Here are a couple of examples of cards created using just the Paint program (thanks goes to Merkle of this community for the McGilberry image):

Frank Carpin 1965

Frank Carpin was a hard-throwing lefty out of Brooklyn and Notre Dame who had already made AAA in just his third season in the Yankees' farm system, but only reached the majors as a bullpen lefty with the Pirates in 1965 and the Astros in 1966.

Carpin was in camp with the Yankees in 1962 and captured in 'the' collection, and also by what appears to have been an Astros' team photographer in spring training of '66. Both images are presented here:

Benny Bengough 1928

Today is the final day that Baseball Birthdays will be on line, and I have barely scratched the surface of the 502 Lexibell folders of amazing press photos. I will post a few of them today, with the kind permission of this board.

When you try to name the lineup of the 1927 Yankees, you probably get hung up at the catching position. It was a three-way deal with Pat Collins, Johnny Grabowski and our man here, Benny Bengough (shot in 1928). Just thought this was a great photo that did not look nearly that dated; Bengough played from 1923-32 with the Yankees and Browns, and the closest he became to being a regular was 1925, when he caught in 95 games for the Yanks. He would go on to be a major league coach for 19 years, including with the 1950 Whitz Kids Phillies.

1928: Cardinals Flychasters (Minus one)

For my new friend J.R. Abney, who is a diehad Cardinals fan, I found this photo of the 1928 St. Louis Cardinals outfielders (minus, notably, Pepper Martin).
Left to right: Hall of Famer Chick Hafey, Wally Roettger, Taylor Douthit, George Harper, Ray Blades, Ernie Orsatti. Of course, Orsatti was also an occasional Hollywood stuntman, and two of his sons became legendary stuntmen themselves.

6-time All-Star George McQuinn

Aside from being one of my favorite Lexibell photos found, reading up on 6-time AL all-star George McQuinn was most enlightening.
Blocked in the Yankees farm system by Lou Gehrig, McQuinn was never even invited to spring training. Finally, after a one-season respite with the Cincinnati Reds, at age 28 he was finally librated when the Browns selected him in the Rule V draft in 1938. He responded with 195 hits and a .324 average. He would go on to earn all-star status four of the next six years, including the 1944 World Champs, as he was one of 18 4-Fs on the Browns' roster.
Traded to the Athletics for the 1946 season, he fell to .225 and was released. But irony of ironies, he was picked up by the Yankees at the last minute and would up with the first base job he coveted for the 1947 season when Charlie Keller was hurt, shaking up the lineup. He hirt .390 the first two months of the season, wound up with a .304 mark and 80s RBIs and sixth in the MVP voting as the Yankees won it all. In 1948, he again started hot (.340 at the end of May), was again an all-star, but completely collapsed to a .248 mark and was released.
Beginning in 1950, as minor league player-manager for the Braves' farm club in Quebec, he won four pennants.

Amado Samuel 1962

In searching the site I noticed a number of requests for images of Amado Samuel with the '64 Mets... I didn't see anything posted, but ebay vendor andy1921 has recently listed this one-

also, Greg Sims with the Astros, Edgar Diaz with the Brewers, and Houston Jimenez with the Twins.

Greg Sims 1966

Speaking of Sims, he was included among those negatives taken as part of a shoot on behalf of the Astros in spring training, 1966. You may have seen some others from the Astrodome Yearbook of that year (Robin Roberts, Jim Wynn, Bob Lillis, etc - and Frank Carpin, posted above).

Sims was a Rule V draftee out of the Pirates' organization, and he stayed with Houston until rosters were cut back to 25 men in the middle of May. The Bucs did not reclaim him, and Sims was actually on the Houston Opening Day roster again in 1967 (albeit on the Military List). Just 20 at the time of his month with the Astros, he would string together several good years in AA ball (including a 21-homer season at Savannah in 1969 and a career .816 OPS), but never get another shot in the majors.

Incidentally when this image was auctioned on eBay it was misidentified as another Astros' outfield prospect of the era, Brock Davis. Though Davis started seven games in center for Houston down the stretch in September, 1966, an actual image of him in an Astro uniform has yet to bubble up.

Kerry Dineen (1952-2015)

Does anyone have any photos of the late Kerry Dineen? He was a left-handed hitting outfielder who hit .324 in his brief major league career (37 at-bats) with the Yankees 1975-1976 and the Phillies (1978).
He died at age 63 in November 2015, but his death was only reported this month.

Kerry Dineen

Here's one - I think TV may have released a couple of him with the Yankees. Now, if you can find an image of him with the Phillies, THAT would be an accomplishment!
