Frank Sullivan (1930-2016)

Two-time American league all-star pitcher, Frank Sullivan passed away in Hawaii on January 19, four days before his 86th birthday
Sullivan was a 1955 and 1956 A.L. all-star for the Boston Red sox and led the league in 1955 in wins with 18.
His career record was 97-100 in eleven MLB seasons (1953-1963) but he was a better pitcher than that record indicates.
He had the misfortune of being in he wrong place at the wrong time when he went 3-16 for the 1961 Phillies. That team set the modern record for futility by going on a 22 game losing streak that summer.
Photos of him with the Red Sox, Phillies and his other teams would be appreciated.

Frank Sullivan

There's a scan of Sullivan with the Twins here...

the two attached scans were glommed off ebay several years ago and I unfortunately did not note the seller of the Phillies pic - the Red Sox pic is from brealdiamond.

The "Phillies" image has, of course, been airbrushed. The background is clearly Yankee Stadium.

I count 18 checklisted, a couple of them duplicated. Are you looking for something specific?

1962 Mets Correction

Marshall Hamilt was known as "Dawes," not "Dewes."
Marshall Hamilt Register Statistics & History | Baseball-Reference.com He was the Mets' first overrated minor league prospect (.893 fielding percentage in the minors).

Hamilt is on the right in the image (the other player is the equally underachieving infielder Bruce Fitzgerald) conveniently posted by B-BD.

How Earl Weaver would look if he was snowed in during the Great Blizzard of 2016, and Topps Vault has been releasing nothing but football picks for more than a week! I feel your pain, Earl. Stay safe everyone!

Frank Prudenti

And in case anybody goes looking for the fellow sitting between Jim Hickman and Roadblock Jones, Frank Prudenti is not a previously unheard-of minor leaguer who stumbled through the Mets' first camp.

Prudenti was the Yankee batboy from 1956 to 1961 and was a Mets' clubhouse assistant in '62 (and captured by Getty):

1978 Season Recreation

Hello all - on my website, where I create a virtual complete set of 1978 Topps cards, I also try to set out each team's complete roster moves during the season. I am using the 1978 Sporting News and some local papers to assist, as there doesn't seem to be a resource available that has this information. You can easily find signings, releases, waiver claims, trades and DL trips, but the hardest to pin down are players' trips between the minors and the big clubs.

So my question is - has anyone already done this? For example, right now I am working on Oakland, and they seem have had more ups and downs during the year than most teams. Many are hard to pin down to specific dates. If there is anyone out there who has already done this, or who knows of a resource (aside from local papers, which I am pursuing as I have time) with this information, I would be most grateful if you could share it with me.

Thanks!

Here's a proper Phillies image of Sullivan, from the Vault.

Bob Moose - Pirates mid 70s

Hey all, although there is plethora of quality images of the Bucs hurler out there, the one I would really prefer for my needs is this one.

I found it on pinterest and it's obviously from the TV folders. I was curious if anyone has seen a "clearer" image of it.

* If only there was a way to search on a player and identify where he was located in the maze of TV folders...hmmm.

Thanks in advance!

Maybe it's the TV crew's homage to the NFL playoffs......

That is the image precisely as it appears in the EM folder. You don't have to be especially proficient with computers to make it better. Attached is the image as it appears with the one button "enhance" from iPhoto.

Bob Moose, so far as I can tell, appears in the following Vault folders:

AD 061
EL 331-338
EM 001-005
GT 273-276
HN 948

As a matter of fact, thanks to all of the great work done over at baseball-birthdays before it closed up shop (Thanks again for that great forum, John!!), just about every TV folder was group-identified. I was using the search function of that site to find different shots of players that perhaps I wanted to use. On its last day, I took the liberty of collecting all of the id's into a LARGE word file. My figuring is that I (or anyone) could search the file for a particular player then take the info and find the appropriate file of John's or Rico's or directly from the TV Images.

I do reiterate that this is a LARGE document (four columns, 42 pages). I would not go printing it if I were you...

1-29-16 Edited for Jim McKnight corrected ID (AP 1604-5).

I have moved all of the checklists onto a message board that I have some control over, Chop Country. Go to the REAL TALK forum, click on the VAULT thread and use your computer's word search. I have 2-3 folders that are not included in the BB-Birthdays leftovers file, and it is updated as needed.

This is EXACTLY what I was doing at John's great site before it was shut down so thanks for one, answering my 'distress' signal, and two, putting in the diligence on the document! Awesome.

Arkansas Judge OKs Sale of Conlon Collection

The Brace Collection, which we tracked about a week ago, was only part of the historic holdings that failed entrepeneur John Rogers owned, or possessed.

Just this past Wednesday, January 20th, Arkansas Circuit Court Judge Chris Piazza, who has been overseeing the myraid of lawsuits and charges surrounding Rogers and his business, authorized court-appointed receiver Michael McAfee to put up for sale the 7,500 remaining glass plate negatives that comprise the Conlon Collection.

This, from the Arkansas Business Journal, which has tracked the Rogers story from the beginning:

Also Wednesday, Piazza approved the future auction of the Conlon Collection, which Rogers once owned. The order allows sales efforts to proceed for an estimated 7,500 glass-plate negatives produced by photographer Charles Conlon (1868-1945).

McAfee indicated it will likely be summer before an auction is held.

The Conlon Collection that Rogers acquired in June 2010 numbered about 8,300 pieces. McAfee said he wasn't sure what happened to reduce the count to about 7,500 before he came aboard and inventoried assets.

"Some of the Conlon plates seem to have evaporated," McAfee testified.

Ownership of the collection is in dispute, with competing claims totaling more than 100 percent. But the only opposition to the sale was made by five people associated with Legendary Auctions of Lansing, Illinois: Doug Allen, Mark Theotikos, Bill Fulton, Amy Allen and Dale Huizena. Referred to collectively as the Allen parties, they claim outright ownership of about 185 Conlon negatives, which largely consisted of images of Hall of Fame players. These glass plates were held in Illinois until a court-order led to their return late last year.

Steve Niswanger, attorney for the Allen parties, said his clients' plates represented the most valuable part of the collection and they would be financially harmed if the plates were included in the auction. The Allen parties represent a combined 56 percent ownership claim, while the 185 plates they had represented about 2.4 percent of the collection.

Piazza said the particulars of who is entitled to receive what portion from the Conlon Collection sale can be addressed in the future. Until then, money from the auction will be put in the court registry.

"We need to have some closure and try to salvage something for the people who have a claim on the collection," Piazza said.

McAfee testified that he was advised the sale of the entire collection as a whole would bring more money than if plates were sold piecemeal.

What is the value of the collection?

"I don't know," he told the court.

Rogers once placed an $18 million value on it, which seems to be tied to projections from marketing prints from the collection. Sources believe the collection should fetch something north of $2 million, twice what Rogers paid for the Conlon Collection and other assets owned by The Sporting News more than five years ago.
