Fuzzy Walton
Fuzzy Walton was an outfielder with the 1930 Baltimore Black Sox and 1938 Pittsburgh Crawfords. The two photos of Fuzzy were taken by Pittsburgh area photographer Charles "Teenie" Harris. The photo on the left was a 1959 shot. The 1958 photo on the right shows Fuzzy in the uniform of the Tommy Smith All-Stars softball team from the Pittsburgh region.

J. C. Seagraves
J. C. Seagraves was the starting center fielder for the 1937 Indianapolis Athletics. This photo is from the Indianapolis News of May 7, 1937.
The newspaper spelled his surname as Seagraves. So did the Negro Baseball Register within THE NEGRO LEAGUES BOOK, by Dick Clark and Larry Lester. But the seamheads.com website gives a spelling of Segraves. |

Leo Hannibal
Leo Jack Hannibal pitched for the Indianapolis ABC's, Indianapolis Athletics, and Homestead Grays during the 1932-38 era. I think this photo represents the same Leo Hannibal. The caption indicates that he had played with the Harlem Globetrotters. The uniform pictured is that of Lincoln College, which was an Illinois school. The photo came from the Richmond (IN) Palladium-Item newspaper of Feb. 1, 1940.

Melzar J. Williams was an outfielder with the 1937 Birmingham Black Barons. This photo appeared in the Aug. 1, 1982 issue of the Mobile (AL) Register, as Melzar and his wife were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Melzar was born in Mobile.

Cannonball Berry
Michael "Cannonball" Berry pitched for the 1937 St. Louis Stars. The photo is from the seamheads.com website. I don't know what the "H-D" on his cap represents. Any thoughts from anyone?
P.S. Received comment from Ctrane that Berry is in a House of David uniform. Ctrane also provided follow-up source reference to agatetype.com website, which confirmed the House of David uniform, and provided a larger view of the photo, which has been added. Last edited by Cusick; 01-15-2020 at 09:32 PM. Reason: Add P.S., along with second version of photo. |

Bob Motley last living Negro League umpire passed away
From Bob's son Byron Motley's Facebook page today:
"It is with a sad yet grateful heart that I tell you that my living legend of a father, my hero and best friend, Bob Motley passed away peacefully yesterday at age 94! A long and fruitful life! We could all use lessons from his life as he lived his with a whole lot of love, grace, dignity, passion and humor! He will be deeply missed, but I'm forever grateful for the countless and amazing memories we shared in this journey of life. As he loved to always say, "we are well blessed"! And that we are and forever will be.... rest well daddy........" |

Silvino Ruiz
Silvino Ruiz was a pitcher, outfielder, and first baseman with the Cuban Stars East and New York Cubans during the 1928 through 1940 period. The attached photo is an upgrade over what I had posted for him previously on this thread. The previous image showed him running to first base, and provided no facial detail. This photo is from the seamheads.com website.

Henry McCall
Henry "Butch" McCall played first base and the outfield in the Negro Leagues during two different periods: 1936-39 and 1944-45. He was with the Chicago American Giants for most of that time. The photo shows him with that team. It is from the Sheboygan (WI) Press of June 23, 1936.

Unknown-First-Name Jackson
The seamheads.com website lists a second baseman named Jackson who appeared in five games for the 1936 Chicago American Giants. This is a photo of that player. It comes from the Sheboygan (WI) Press of June 23, 1936.

Wilbert LaBeaux
Wilbert LaBeaux was a second baseman for the 1936 Chicago American Giants. The spelling of his surname seems to be in dispute. I've used the spelling as given in the website seamheads.com, which is the most current. The Negro Leagues Register in THE NEGRO LEAGUES BOOK, by Clark and Lester, listed the surname as LeBeaux. So did the caption to the photo, which is from the Sheboygan Press of June 23, 1936.

Donald Tye
Donald Tye pitched for the Cincinnati Tigers in 1936. This photo shows him in the uniform of that team, and it comes from the Green Bay (WI) Press-Gazette of Sept. 3, 1936.
James Riley's book, BIOGRAPHICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE NEGRO LEAGUES, indicates that a Dan Tye was both a pitcher for the 1936 Cincinnati Reds and a third baseman for the 1930 Memphis Red Sox. I assume that the latter is the same fellow as this Donald Tye. |

Garcia Massingale
Garcia Massingale was an outfielder with the 1945 Kansas City Monarchs. The seamheads.com website lists him only as a pinch hitter for the Monarchs that year. The photo comes from the Pittsburgh Courier of August 31, 1974, when he was Treasurer of the Pan-African Foundation.

Clarence McMullin
Clarence McMullin was an outfielder with the Kansas City Monarchs and Houston Eagles during the 1945-49 period. The caption to this photo said he was with the St. Louis Stars, which in 1945 was a team in the Negro American League -- which played at a level below that of the established Negro Leagues. The photo is from the Davenport (IA) Daily Times of May 29, 1945. Neither seamheads.com nor THE NEGRO LEAGUES BOOK, by Clark and Lester, lists the St. Louis Stars as one of the teams in the Negro Leagues during the 1945 season. Seamheads.com recognizes the St. Louis Stars as a Negro Leagues team only for the period of 1922-1928.
Last edited by Cusick; 09-24-2017 at 10:12 AM. Reason: Correct spelling; clarify St. Louis Stars situation. |

Greene Farmer
Greene Farmer, Jr., was an outfielder who played in 1942 with the New York Black Yankees and Jacksonville Red Caps, and in 1945 with the Indianapolis Clowns and the New York Cubans. I had previously posted on this thread a photo of him in a basketball uniform. Now, on the left, we have a photo of him in the baseball uniform of the 1946 Cincinnati Crescents, at a level below that of the established Negro Leagues. That photo is from the Lafayette (IN) Journal and Courier of July 16, 1946. On the right is a crisper view of Greene in the same basketball pose as the one posted previously (Sept., 2014) in the uniform of the Kansas City All-Stars basketball team.

Ted Strong, Sr.
Ted Strong, Sr. was the manager of the Indianapolis Athletics in 1937. The players on his team included his son, Ted, Jr., who went on to become the well-known Negro Leagues player. This Indianapolis team was in the Negro American League, playing at a level below that of the recognized Negro Leagues, but I'm posting this photo of Ted Strong, Sr., because he is a significant person in Negro Leagues history due to his relationship to his son. The photo is from the seamheads.com website.
