Retouched 1970 Lou Camilli

Guys,

I was soooo excited about the Lou Camilli pic that I wanted to try my hand at the 1970 pic right away. Here is my MVP game ready portrait of Camilli. With the jersey emblem cut off, you can't tell if it's a 1970 or 1971 one.

Thanks again Guys!!!

Larry Bowa 1970

Given that his last major league stop with the 1985 Mets lasted only 14 games yet produced those two good Brace "windbreaker" images from Wrigley Field, I don't know that anybody would consider Larry Bowa a white whale (except perhaps some umpires).

Still it's a surprise to see this image, of Bowa in full uniform (and home uniform no less), and during one of his only 11 plate appearances in Shea Stadium as a Met, posted from the always productive files of eBay seller Dr. Jteee:

Almost certainly from his first game with the Mets, the second game of a double header on 23-Aug-1985. Matching what we can see in this photo with details from the play-by-play, it seems to be from his first Mets at-bat, in the third inning.

Tony Castillo 1978

Here's a white whale. Tony Castillo, veteran of exactly nine big league plate appearances with the '78 Padres and the subject of countless photoshop experiments. Two images posted by Topps equals or exceeds the previous population in color or black and white:

Foster Castleman 1954

I believe the only images of this '50s utility infielder with his last team, the 1958 Orioles, are an airbrushed cap job on his card of that year, and one of two team issued black-and-whites. Sure enough, there he is in all his Baltimore glory at the original Yankee Stadium:

Bob Castiglione

While he never pitched in the majors, Bob Castiglione (in today's Vault release for the first time) was twice on the Braves' 40-man roster and falls under the category of someone who went on to bigger and better things once his career ended.
He was a Rule V pickup from the Twins in 1968, but was offered back to them at the end of spring training. However, they declined to take him back and he remained in the Braves' chain. He was added to the 40-man roster in a conventional manner in 1970 (pitctured here), but again failed to make the club.
But that is but a footnote in the life of Castiglione, who rose to become the founder and CEO of LEAP Systems, Inc., a corporation that he continues to run in 2016.

Charlie Spikes Braves Home Jersey 79-80

Charlie Spikes spent 1979 and 1980 with the Braves, but try finding photos of him in their home pinstripes of the era. Only two cards issued of him with the Braves featured road jerseys; likewise the only Braves image in the Vault.
Plucked out of a Lexibell file.

Minnie Mendoza 1970

There is one detail from a George Brace photo of this baseball lifer, but I don't think there's a full color photo of him floating around - except for this one, now.

Minnie Mendoza had signed with the Reds in 1954, and even though he'd spent eight seasons with Charlotte of the Southern League, he had played for 11 minor league teams and reached the age of 36 before he shocked baseball by making the Twins out of Spring Training, 1970.

He got only 16 at bats in as many games, and just three hits, and returned to the minors for four more seasons (including yet another two in Charlotte). He returned as the Orioles' first base coach in 1988. This image, from 'the' collection, is from his memorable work in the spring of 1970:

A Few Lexibell Easter Eggs: Paul Stuffel

Phillies' short-timer Paul Stuffel probably thought the 1953 season had infinite possibilities as he spent spring training with the big club. But his big league days were over after two apperances, no outs and four earned runs -- an infinity earned run average for the season.
But Stuffel was also a small part of the 1950 Whiz Kids season with three September appearances. Overall, he made it into seven MLB games over three seasons.

1961: Joe D. and his heir

Spring training, 1961. Then, as now, college students flocked to Florida for their spring break, and a Yale undergrad by the name of Joe DiMaggio Jr. spent a few days in the Yankees' camp, even getting some tips from his Hall of Famer father.
The son of Joe's first wife, Dorothy Arnold, he and his dad were estranged late in Joe's life, but was one of his pallbearers during Joe Sr.'s funeral in March of 1999. But suffering from the effects of years of drug and alcohol abuse, Joe Jr. only outlived his dad by four months, passing away in August, 1999, at the age of 57.

Spring 1965: Doc and Bo -- An epic meeting

History is full of those epic moments when two giants closs paths: Nixon and Elvis, Lennon and McCartney, Batman and Superman.
One such moment took place in the spring of 1965 when the Phillies brought together two of baseball's all-time legends: Bo and Dr. Strangeglove. Pitcher Bo Belinsky, suspended by the Angels after slugging a 64-year-old sportswriter, and first baseman Dick Stuart, landing with his third team in four seasons despite driving in 114 runs for the Red Sox in 1964, were suddenly teammates.
While both went on to add to their respective legends, Stuart hit only .234 and was traded again, while Belinsky stewed over being assigned to the bullpen midseason, sulked his way to a 4-9 record. The Phillies would finish 6th.

Happy Easter Everybody!

This meeting of these two notorious bad boys, Stuart & Belinsky could only have taken place at Spring Training 1965, not in 1964 as you have stated. Neither of them were part of "The Phillies' Great Collapse Team of '64". Stuart spent his only year with the Phillies in 1965. Belinsky was a Phillie only in 1965 & 1966.

Paul Stuffel had his 89th birthday a few days ago (March 22). He currently is ranked as the 95th oldest player on Wikipedia's Oldest currently Living Major Leaguers list.
Stuffel made his MLB debut on September 16, 1950 while the Whiz Kids Phillies team was desperately trying to hold off a late season surge by the Brooklyn Dodgers to overtake them for 1st place and the National League pennant.
